Skywalker Sound Comments On So-Called "Subtle" Changes To Star Wars Blu-Ray's!

Whether it's a CGI Yoda or Darth Vader crying "Noooo!" while taking on the Emperor, the past few days has seen a fair few controversial changes come to light. Well, here's what an official source had to say about them...

IGN Movies recently had the chance to catch up with Skywalker Sound's Matthew Wood, who commented on George Lucas' decision to make some further changes to the six movies before their upcoming re-release on blu-ray next month. It's interesting to note that the following interview took place BEFORE the news of drastic alterations such as the "Nooo!" scene leaked, so I guess they're not that subtle after all!

"Every time we watch the movies he's got something he wants to change. And so there's obviously changes done to the films, visually as well as audio-wise. So there are some changes in the Blu-ray version that you'll have to find. [Laughs] That's always fun. It's funny because we meticulously put it all together like, 'Here's where it was.' And then he'll update it."

"I mean we're talking super subtle like a footstep here and there or a couple of lines of dialogue, or maybe some background stuff that we would basically go in and just re-perform or get an approximate sound. But very, very, very small subtle stuff. Just little comments here and there that were production lines that might not have been used or changes. But they're all very subtle little things that people will find."

What do you guys make of all this? Is it up to Lucas to do whatever he likes with his movies, or is it about time that he leaves them well alone for the fans to enjoy? Will you be buying the blu-ray set? Be sure to share your thoughts on that and the comments above in the usual place!

Just a poor excuse for bad decision making. George Lucas has proven himself a genius, as well as a complete idiot, who has no consideration for his audience. He impresses me on some levels, then upsets me on others.

To die-hard Star Wars fans, theres no such thing as subtle. They know everybody, everything and every scene in each movie. Face it, you guys [frick]ed up.

I really feel like they have destroyed what I used to think was a very good set of films, first with the sequels then with this constant reconstruction of the films. Johnathan3d, you have it exactly correct sir. He's just looking for more loot without actually doing anything new or stealing another story from various sources.

I enjoyed the 1997 Special Edition and thought it was cool to have another version of the movies.

And if it had stopped there, it would've been fine but the prequel elements jammed into the DVD version and now this...

I'd be okay with it if each version was available on the latest release, like with Blade Runner but I can't watch the original movies any more.

And that's really sad.

I actually prefer watching the prequels now, since at least they are available in their original forms.

I don't care. It's not so horrible.

I think blinking Ewoks is better. The CGI Yoda is definitly better than TPM puppet. I know they added more CGI aliens to Jabba's palace in ROTJ and it at least makes some of the alien "characters" throughout all 6 films consistent.

If they added stuff to the PT like putting Qui-Gon in ROTS as a ghost or changing something in AOTC nobody would care. Everyone just gets their panties in a wad over the OT. It doesn't really fundamentaly change them.

Lucas is an A-hole. No integrity what so ever. Really someone needs to slap some sense into this guy. It sounds like he surrounds himself with an army of "yes men" who are afraid to tell it like it is. The prequels suck so bad that they're starting to make me like the first three movies less and less.

"They are his movies, so he can do as he wishes. And no one is obligated to buy them so people need to quit whining. I'll have it day one for sure."- jasonicus

Hows the Kool-Aid? Anyway, we know were not "obligated" to buy the butchered films and even Stevie Wonder can see that Lucas can do whatever he wants with them, DUH, he's been doing it ALREADY. So don't start telling people their "whining" just because you have your mouth open and you don't care about what you get. Some people have views about it and this is a message board.

Am I going to buy this?

NNNHHOOOOOOOooowwOOOWWOOOOO!!!!!

Lucas has been moaning for 20 years about the colourization of Black and White movies. I quote..

"I am very concerned about our national heritage, and I am very concerned that the films that I watched when I was young and the films that I watched throughout my life are preserved, so that my children can see them."
―George Lucas

So how about the original ground breaking theatrical cuts of Star Wars, and Empire, don't they deserve exactly the same amount of respect and preservation you bloody hypocrite?!

God I hate idiots who say it's "HIS FILMS and he can do what he likes" you sycophants! He' made them and made money of them by selling them to us. We have as much right to expect the same film we saw in the cinema that we invested in to be available on home video whatever the new format is. Movie making is a reciprocation process, a symbiotic relationship not a one way street. He's only where he is today because we invested in the movies he made that we liked, that makes them as much public property in terms of expectations as any other film in the catalogue. Star Wars is no special case and you people need to stop treating Lucas like he is one and stop kissing a$$.

No problem with updating old effects with new one, as long as they actually match the old footage, elsewhere it's still better only restore the old ones. There is a disturbing lack of care with the original cut, which is pityful.

Any artist will tell you, a work of art is never done. If you do not walk away and leave it alone you will always find things to improve. In this case, it is time... Ehm.. It was time a while ago, but... it is time to move on.

Im happy for the improvements, I can pass it down to my son, and he can get the same feeling I got when I first experienced StarWars.

But hopefully we can get on and get to the T.V. show or the next film.

Depends really, some things needed work, others didnt.
The puppet Yoda from the original trilogy was charming in its presentation, it worked for those movies with the tech they had. But I'm glad they CGI'd Yoda in the Phantom Menace for the blu-ray release, the Yoda puppet from that film was awful, and the fact he was CG for the other two films made it seem incoherent. Now he's CG for the entire prequel trilogy, it looks great, Episode 4 gives a chronological gap in which Yoda isnt seen, so the puppet doesnt seem too odd afterward, and the slower movements could just as easily be due to the character's age as it is the limitations of a puppet vs CGI.

But the 'NOOOOOOOOOO' was annoying in Sith, although I guess it made sense, and it is ridiculous in Jedi. It wont ruin the film for me like it might for some, but it was unnecessary, and doesnt really make sense in the context of the scene (is Vader upset that he's killing the Emperor to save his son?)

Just please, Mr Lucas, no more random edits and rereleases. Focus on the live-action TV show, maybe make a Force Unleashed show (and a third game to make up for the stupidly short second instalment in that franchise), we're set on the movie side of things.

I hope they surprise us by including the theatrical versions in the release, I've never actually seen them and I really want to (I've only seen the 1997 editions) then I get to watch Vader kill the Emperor without being a whiney bitch about it

Years ago, Coke-a-cola made 'New Coke'. People hated it. Coke responded bring back the original formula calling 'Coke Classic'. They faded out production of 'New Coke' and eventually dropped the 'Classic'. Now it's just Coke-a-cola again. What's the point-?
Listen, Lucas made a product which we bought-'Star Wars'. We loved it!
We're the consumer's and he's the manufacturer of the product. We don't like what he did with the product, so we protest the change. But Lucas just basically says," FU** you! You'll drink the whatever 'Coke' I CHOOSE to make and you'll like it...and I don't care if you dont".
That's NOT good business thinking. You need to make your customer's happy so they continue to buy your product...or you go out of business. He's obligated to his customers -US!!! It's our money he wants, and according to this thread alone-!, he's obviously not getting it!
I remember Harrison Ford doing an interview on "60 Minutes" were he says, "the fans who buy tickets to my movies are my customers- I serve them".
Take a quote from Han Solo Lucas , and give your customers what they want...Episode #7: " Rise of the New Republic", or something thereof.
(damn, I'm pissed!)

@intruder- amen.
I'm an artist and can tell you from years of experience that if you re-work a peice too much, it starts to get worse. So at that point you just correct your last alteration and it's done! If there are any artists here I know you'll back me up. You walk away from the piece a couple times ,notice improvements , make them and then that's it! It's done. Finished! You just can't improve it anymore whether it's a drawing, painting, 3-d art or computer illustration. It's like a woman who gets TOO CRAZY with cosmetic surgery- they end up looking like freaks! Man, Lucas, Stop this insanity!!!

Lucas is like Anakin. When he was humble, creative and struggling to get STAR WARS done when no one believed in him, he was like the good Jedi, Anakin. But he was troubled and eventually became power hungry and greedy, then turned into the fat Dark Side Lucas.

And for anybody who says re-casting's a problem, uhhh, does the new 'Star Trek' movie ring a bell? Chris Pine slayed the role of Kirk, Zachary Quinto slayed the role of Spock ,and Karl Urban did boss justice to Bones. The original actors aren't the characters, the characters have a life of their own. What's needed are talented actors who can portrait those characters faithfully and the public, and fans ,will embrace them like we did with Star Trek.
Moreover we're going to have 3 different Bruce Banner/ Hulks since 2003. Bruce Banner/Hulk lives on- actors are replaced.
