thought that silver trooper in the hood was not in the movie or something. so why the thumbnail?

I think that's going to be the most important thing to nail down for these movies: the tone. Make it too silly/slapstick and the comparisons to the prequels will never end. Make it too dark and gritty and people will complain about all the joy and wonder being sucked out of the Star Wars brand. Find the perfect balance between the two, and it'll be that much easier to get people to love this new trilogy.

Nothing wrong with that. Make it as different from the prequels as possible and retain the charm of the originals. It's easier said than done but if JJ does this justice Star Wars will be back for good.

Pretty much. CGI alone wasn't the reason why the prequels sucked. It certainly didn't help, but it probably would've been forgivable had the rest of the movies actually been any good. Still, the focus on practical effects and all that is a good sign for this new trilogy.

@dethpillow Yep I hear you. I kind of have mixed feelings on George Lucas though. On one hand...he was responsible for the Original Trilogy and all the great stuff in it. On the other...he was easily the one person who was most responsible for the Prequels.

The comparison I always make is that he and Peter Jackson pretty much have the same exact strengths and weaknesses. When making their first trilogies (the original Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings obviously), they had a LOT of constraints and restrictions that they had to abide by. And that helped keep both directors under control (for the most part) and trim things down and NOT get overly-indulgent, and so the story was as tight and concise as possible. But once they started getting mainstream success (which led to the Prequels and The Hobbit)...all those constraints disappeared. They were trusted and had the freedom to do whatever they wanted to do. They didn't have anyone to tell them "No" or "Hey, that's a bad idea. Maybe you should reconsider doing that."

And both Jackson and Lucas became their own worst enemy, you know? It's no coincidence that both of their original trilogies are considered pop culture classics, and they focused so much on the characters and practical effects and all that...while their second trilogies were MUCH more divisive, both were ridiculously CGI-heavy (to the extent that everyone compares them to video games), etc etc.

But back to your point: I think the Prequels had that feeling of being made up while they went along, or that Lucas really had no clear idea of the story he was trying to tell, because he had no one around him who would stand up and tell him that Jar Jar Binks was going to far. Or that no one wanted to see "Midichlorians". Or that focusing on the politics of trade federations and blockades and all that is actually REALLY [frick]ing boring. Rather than having other people write the dialogue and come up with the plot and just have Lucas direct it...he did it ALL. And so whatever funny idea he came up with in his head, he just went with it. That was pretty much his downfall, IMO.
