STAR WARS: SHADOW OF THE SITH Spoilers Reveal Intriguing New Details About Emperor Palpatine's Sith Eternals

Emperor Palpatine's return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ended up dividing fans, though there's really no reason why his resurrection shouldn't have been one of this franchise's most exciting, epic moments. Unfortunately, it was all a bit too convoluted, and with no definitive answers about how Palpatine returned or Snoke's role beyond being a clone, there was a lot of frustration.

Tie-in material would later explain that the villain had been plotting a contingency plan for years, attempting to make himself a new body that would help ensure he'd live forever. When Darth Vader threw his former Master to his "death," Palpatine transferred his essence into a waiting clone, but neither that nor those that followed were able to contain his Sith powers.

Adam Christopher's latest novel Shadow of the Sith reveals more about how active Palpatine was during those years, appearing before Sith bounty hunter Ochi of Bestoon as a "Force Ghost," demanding he finds his granddaughter on the off chance she has the connection to the Force her cloned father did not.

What compels Ochi to embark on this mission? The villain, who we learn once clashed with Mace Windu, is looking to make himself "whole" again, and the only way he can do that is by finding Exegol. It appears he's hoping for a new cloned body to replace the one he has (he's kept alive with cybernetic implants), and that salvation is what Palpatine promises.

We learn Exegols' Sith Eternals are religious zealots who have long done the bidding of their Dark Side masters. It's actually established that both the Emperor and Darth Vader visited the planet on numerous occasions in the past, so we're sure there are more stories to be told during that time too.

This group is one with a lot of history, anyway, as the Sith Eternals are shown chanting the names of Sith "heroes" like Darths Plagueis, Revan, Noctyss, Sanguis, Kakon, Voord, and Shaa.

Some fans might have hoped for more from this book - we're guessing Snoke's story is being saved for elsewhere - but there are a lot of intriguing smaller reveals to unpack here that definitely help make sense of the Star Wars sequels. Palpatine clearly started plotting his revenge before the credits rolled on Return of the Jedi, so fingers crossed more details on that are coming!

This was also done in the 90s Dark Empire series when the emperor explained that he was too powerful and the clone bodies couldn’t handle it so they aged prematurely which was he wanted to possess Leias unborn baby.

@AnthonyVonGeek - that shit was kinda dark now that I think about it.

Palpatine possessing a young adult I can live with, but a baby is just next level dark

@AnthonyVonGeek - Yeah it was pretty much clear that TROS was inspired directly by the Dark Empire storyline. It is even funnier if you think that Kathleen Kennedy said that they hadn't any 600 page book to adapt (obviously meaning they weren't explictely and directly adapting any source material to movies, god please stop not understanding basic implicit concepts) then JJ Abrams decided to steal or, more accurately, *take a lot of concepts without customizing them* directly from the books scrambling stuff enough to enable marketing teams and the LFL Story Group to represent them as completely new concepts.

Also, because JJ is all about pleasing crowds, he tried as well to both support and deny stuff from EpVIII, making a lot of mess in the process, since those stolen concepts COULD have been working if they were put in a bigger picture. Star Wars works better if you use it to show a bigger picture and maybe, if JJ knew from the beginnning he would have helmed EpIX it would have been something nice to see Heir of the Empire and Dark Empire stuff reworked into movies... but with something like this nope. Neither Trevorrow or Abrams could do something to close this trilogy with the right stuff.

@FrankieDedo - yeah trevorrow was not the answer. At least with JJ we got some gorgeous shots and scenes. Colin has no sense of style and his films are kind of ugly

I find enjoyment in all three sequel films just because I love SW. But they really should have planned it and not let the directors have complete freedom. Sometimes a bad thing

@ThorArms - Yeah, Episode IX wouldn't have been so "bad" if it was like a show episode or a middle movie. It was okay at best, but as the ending of THE saga? nah.

And here I was thinking Luke was cool for doing a force projection. Now it feels kinda lame, knowing Palpatine could do it too.

Same with Palpatine's force PA. The man clearly has money to pay for all his Sith shenanigans, so I'm pretty sure he could just sent electronic messages all around. Which he did. Him just holo-calling and projecting his face only the size of the whole room is just way funnier and cooler.

@bkmeijer1 - I mean Palpatine was theoretically stronger than Luke in the first place.

@ThorArms - true. But still, feel like it kinda takes away from Luke, especially when they could've given Palps his own cool thing

Boring. Instead watch the movie RRR on Netflix, you won’t regret it.

No matter how much revisionist accompanying backstory they create nothing, absolutely nothing will salvage that dumpster fire sequel trilogy.

They had and wasted their golden opportunity.

@TyrantBossMedia - I hate to agree with you, but... yeah, the sequel trilogy was a spectacular misfire, and one they quite simply can't fix.

I find it funny how the books put in more thought into the plot then the TV shows and movies.

It must be hell for George Lucas to watch Disney take shit after shit on his creation.

The shadow of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER is so ugly, no amount of post-game expanded univers-ing will make it look better. Disney really burned the end of the rope with that one.

Love or hate THE LAST JEDI, that movie left room to make the STAR WARS story bigger, whereas TROS reduced it to the same old generational bloodline crap.

@NoAssemblyReqd - Last Jedi just completely blew my excitement for a third installment away unfortunately

@NoAssemblyReqd - I loved The Last Jedi ending, the boy using the Force had so much potential. We could have had a new generations of kids destined for greatness, discovered and trained by Rey (with the sacred texts) to fight the First Order. But No....Let's just ignore the whole sequence...

How can you have a whole Sith CULT in your movie and not doing anything with it? There is a crowd of HUNDREDS of followers devoted to the Dark Side on Exegol, this is litteraly an ARMY...and they just...sit there and do nothing? Mediocre script.

The only good thing to come out of Disney's acquisition of Star Wars has been the Mandalorian, and for the lesser part Rogue One. They should just stop. It's clearly not working in their favour.

The prequels seems like gold now.

I've liked some stuff they did but it's not going to age well, plus it's only cheapens the effect of the original trilogy...Bringing back Palpatine/Sideous is an example of that. Vader redeemed himself by killing him, only for him to not die? Urgh.
