STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Director Didn't Know Lucasfilm Planned To Kill Ben Solo In THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has revealed that no one at Lucasfilm told him about plans to kill Ben Solo when he was making that movie, shedding some light on the studio's lack of planning.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi was a divisive movie, and in a blatant attempt at course correction, The Rise of Skywalker  did everything from sidelining Rose Tico to revealing Rey as Emperor Palpatine's daughter, and attempting to redeem Luke Skywalker. In trying to please everyone, the Skywalker Saga finale actually ended up alienating more fans, and is widely considered a major disappointment.

While the early Star Wars movies were made without a plan in place, that approach really didn't work with these sequels, and the trilogy ultimately boiled down to the conflicting visions of two filmmakers.

In a recent interview, Rian Johnson revealed that no one at Lucasfilm mentioned plans to kill Ben Solo in the final chapter (remember, he was supposed to become a full-blown villain in Colin Trevorrow's Duel of the Fates). The filmmaker also mentioned that he wanted to leave the door open to the story going any number of places when there was a "hand off" between Episode VIII and IX.

At this point, the sequels are... what they are. Things are definitely looking up for the Star Wars franchise, though, with the stories playing out on television going over much better with fans.

Check out a recap of Johnson's comments below:

Well, duh? One of the biggest points about TLJ was that Kylo’s redemption wasn’t going to be easy as Vader’s was; in other words, it wasn’t going to go the way we thought it might would.

Imagine if Kylo survived and became a wandering hero/bounty hunter to atone for his mistakes... he could have finally “broken” the Skywalker curse of dying at the end of each trilogy. Could have made for a really hopeful ending too

He destroyed several planets in one move, he did not deserve better in fact he deserved worst.

Sure as hell didnt deserve a half assed redemption

@dracula -
To be fair, Darth Vader committed genocide, slaughtered children, murdered countless innocents, and was involved with two Death Stars. Not exactly a golden goose either.

Always felt Adam Driver was probably the best part of this trilogy, though admittedly, if there's anything this trilogy did right, it was casting.
Personally thought making him unredeemable seemed a more interesting arc, but hey-ho, least I've still got my Jaden Solo/Darth Caedus head-canon to enjoy

Sigh, can we just forget these movies ever happened?
Kylo Ren was the edgy metal head version of Vader and Rey just another Luke proxy.

Also the Kylo Ren fanbase being so persistent over their bae is annoying as all hell. It kind of reminds me of the Twilight and Vampire Diaries fanbases back in the day

WHAT? There's a lack of vision and understanding between directors of this trilogy?! I'm shocked! SHOCKED, I tell you!

I would have preferred Star Wars: Duel of the Fates directed by Trevorrow, but keep the Scene where Ben Imagines Han. From what I’ve heard, Ben still redeemed himself in DOF anyway

@JFerguson - It’s kind of a half assed redemption that happens moments before he dies. In fact, he literally blinds Rey during the big fight, but he still somehow redeems himself.

I keep telling myself that all the dumb things in DOTF would have been fixed if they had a few more rewrites like they would have if Collin stayed on

That’s probably because there was no plan.
