Bale Thought Terminator Franchise was Dead

Christian Bale discusses how he felt when he first received the script for TERMINATOR SALVATION from McG.

Christian Bale took one look at the title on the script and immediately decided to pass on Terminator Salvation. He told Entertainment Weekly:

"I went, 'No, I don't even have to read this. I just thought, the mythology is dead. I mean, I did flick through (the script), because you can always be surprised. But I wasn't surprised by what I read in that one."

Director McG, back in Hollywood, wouldn't take "no" for an answer. He conquered his fear of flying--which prevented him from working on the relaunch of Superman--and flew to London to convince Bale that it was a project he needed to be a part of. Bale said:

"I had people telling me, 'Don't do it, Christian. Don't go with that guy.' In a strange way, I like the fact that he keeps that name because it does him no friggin' favors,'' says Bale. ''But people hear it and they go, 'F--- him!' People were telling me, 'Christian, you're too good for Terminator.' And I'm thinking, I'm too good? I'm not a snob. I really f---ing enjoy watching a good action movie. Who do you think I am?!"

Terminator Salvation stars Christian Bale as John Connor, the man destined to lead the human resistance against Skynet's army of Terminators, Anton Yelchin as a young Kyle Reece and Sam Worthington as Marcus Wright, a human-Terminator hybrid. It has also been rumored that Arnold Schwarzenegger will make a brief appearance in the film, thanks to CGI technology and stock footage from Terminator (1984).

Terminator Salvation explodes into theaters May 21st!

No Mr. Bale, you're not a snob, just a prick at times haha

I actually like the fact that Bale speaks his mind and is a bit of an ass at times. It's hard to get behind an action hero that always says and does everything to make himself look better, like Brad Pitt, for example.

I like him too, he's a great actor, and I think is perfect for John Connor, and agreed, he speaks his mind, and that's good...he just went a bit overboard at the DP, but it totally was the DP's fault...this movie's gunna rock though, can't wait

@vonstallin: That's fricken great!!! I've been thinking that for the last week and just never commented on it (prolly better that way).

It is nice to see that he has some humility especially with all the bad press he got for a while. Looks like he is going to do a good job in this movie, let's just hope the movie doesn't let him down.

Seems as though anyone that speaks their minds nowadays are considered ass****s. Well, guess that's what I am. My mom said "Do something your good at" so that I decided ass**** it is.

No, only people who take themselves TOO seriously like Bale. In fact as we can see in every damn article about him, he never quits. So he's an ass but he's very good at what he does. Being an ass doesn't take anything away from his talent.

@dizzle716: Dude I would rather be an ass and speak my mind than not speak it at all. I can see where people might think that he is an ass and maybe he is but I just do not see it that way.

I think Bale is awesome, but I'm afraid Salvation isn't going to be as great as I would have liked.

The Damn movie has been getting less than stellar reviews so far...a solid 7/10.

No character development, poor story (obviously Branspanko and fatface suck), overly played out action scenes.

Apparently not even Bale is that good.

I know I'll enjoy, but I just hope it will be successful enough so that there will be some sequels...maybe they'll do better.

Macksimus my hopes were never too high because McHack was directing, so im sure i will enjoy it..hell it might even surpass my expectations!

LEEE777 - The franchise was never dead, it was just crippled and almost had a sex change with #3!

So does Bale say what changed his mind other than some guy flying with buttocks clenched for 7hrs?
ironknight27
ironknight27 - 5/15/2009, 3:40 PM
@Rorschach- Yeah it can only surpass my expectation because I do not think that they can get any lower.

I'm sick of everyone bashing Bale cause of that one incident. I'm not claiming to be his best friend or acting like I know anything about him, let alone more than everyone else on here, but seriously, is there ONE person on here who hasn't done ONE thing that they regret, something that SHOULDN'T be considered to be the epitome of their existence? I've done more than my fair share of stupid things but I don't consider myself a douche bag. (And with that, the flood gates will open...) The point is this: the guy makes awesome movie after awesome movie. He's not eating babies for breakfast (as far as I know) and he won't be coming to ANY of our houses for dinner, so as long as he makes badass movies then who cares?
Macksimus
Macksimus - 5/15/2009, 4:22 PM
@Rorschach

Yeah, I should probably be lowering my expectations right now too before I see the movie, but I think all the reviews that I have been reading have already done that for me.

I will go into the movie not expecting anything great...just another Terminator movie apart of a franchise that I truly hold dear to my fanboy heart.

@Metalhead

Yeah, Bale is the coolest guy in Hollywood IMO. He doesn't have an assistant or a posse, and he drives an old beat up pic-up truck. He's VERY down to earth. All he cares about is making movies and being a good father and husband; the rest can just **** off.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/15/2009, 4:58 PM
The Bale out thing, for me anyway, gets mileage just because of how damn funny it was! All the dance remixes and stuff crack me up..i think he sounded like a prick on the tape but im sure it doesnt define him. like metalhead said, i doubt he eats babies..maybe just screams at them when they pass in front of him in their strollers

@macksimus, why does driving a beat up pick up make him cool. the only reason hes driving that truck is so people will say "how down to earth he is" and "what a cool guy"
SGA
SGA - 5/16/2009, 12:26 AM
Darthstern...who are you to tell us why he drives that beat up pick up. You're not him.

Maybe he likes it. Maybe it has sentimental value. Maybe it is so people won't say he's a prick. maybe it's all of the above.

What I'm trying to say is...

Don't put yourself in his place and tell us why he does something.

You're not him, and in any case, it's none of our [frick]ing business anyway why he drives what he does.

It's his choice. Not ours. Deal with it.

MetalHead & ironknight27- I concidered Bale being an ass after what he had done but was more than willing to drop it since i also have done things in the past that i have regreted. Now i say he's an ass for the manner in which he expresses himself. I mean you all damn well know i enjoy speeking my mind but i don't pass as an ass 24/7. Yes i sometimes do comment in a "ass" related way but not to often. Bale almost pride's himself for being an ass. The same goes for the actor that played Adrian Veidt. Did he pull off a good performance? Of course, but he's still an ass and an undisputed one at that. I don't mix their talent with their personalities. Bale and Matthew Goode are both talented asses and theirs no denying it.

Maybe no denying their talent shaman, but easy to deny that they are asses considering you know nothing about them. Also easy to deny considering Bale doesn't sound like an ass at all in interviews hell he sounds like the only honest guy in hollywood to me a guy who says what he means and means what he says. Bravo for him. Maybe if he would fake smile more often you wouldn't think that.
