James Cameron shares with
MTV News that when he last spoke with Arnold, the actor was seeking advice about signing on for
Terminator 5. In that conversation Cameron didn't believe the current script or plot, if you will, was focused enough on Arnold's character, the T-800. He advised that the actor shouldn't sign on until the film centers around Arnold.
"I was talking to him back in fall about a new 'Terminator' film and quietly advising on that. I was trying to be as encouraging as possible. Frankly, at that time, I thought it needed to be more about him. I told him he should not do it until it's focused on his character. I think there are some great stories that can be told about that character that haven't even been thought of yet."
The film hit a snag last year when director Justin Lin opted out of the gig so that he could pursue another
Fast and the Furious film. Since then not much news has come out except that the producer, Megan Ellison, promised a return to an R rating.
So if we take her at her word and we have an R rated film, and toss in a T-800 centered story, would that be enough to get the fan-base excited again? I mean let's be honest, how can you make a movie about a robot like the T-800 and explain the noticeable aging of Arnold? I think any scientific explanation will be laughable. Something akin to what moviegoers experienced this past weekend while watching Peter Berg's
Battleship.
Okay, so if they don't allow Arnold to be naturally older in the role, I guess you could portray him as the human form that the robot is modeled after. That seems fairly lame, and who really wants to watch Arnold as merely a human? Or, you could go back to the fourth film as inspiration and use a CGI Arnold, but that wasn't embraced since it looked incredibly fake, and was such a brief tease with it's miniscule screen time.
I'll ask you, do you want
Terminator Five with Arnold in the lead, and if so, how would you make it work?
