TERMINATOR: SALVATION Director McG Says There's A Much Darker Version Of The Movie We Haven't Seen

Terminator: Salvation director McG has revealed that there's a much darker version of the movie we've never seen, so is it time to now #ReleasetheMcGCut? Find out what the filmmaker had to say right here.

There have been a number of attempts to breathe new life into the Terminator franchise since the hit sequel in 1991, and none of them have really managed to stick the landing. While Tim Miller's Terminator: Dark Fate was more positively received than past efforts, it disappointed at the box office, and the future of the iconic series is now very much in doubt.

One of those failed past efforts was 2009's Terminator: Salvation. Despite an all-star cast which included Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, and Bryce Dallas Howard, it's probably most "fondly" remembered for Bale's on-set meltdown which was recorded and later went viral online.

During an interview with CBR, director McG revealed that there's an alternate cut he believes Terminator fans would appreciate. "It's interesting because I feel like we did so much right with Terminator but, ultimately, got just enough wrong that we got beat up a little bit by the fanbase and it really, really broke my heart. And now, strangely, I think the film has started to age better."

"And there is a different cut," the filmmaker continued. "I have my own cut of that film and there's people online that talk about wanting to see that cut. And that's interesting! But I think I got a lot of things right with that. Obviously, I think [uncredited screenwriter] Jonah Nolan is very, very serious writer and he did the best he could. [Maybe] the cut that I have of that movie hidden away is the answer. It's darker! [Laughs] I don't know, that's for the fans to say."

While this is certainly intriguing, there doesn't appear to be much demand for anyone to #ReleaseTheMcGCut. The rights issues surrounding the franchise are also complicated, and it's unlikely anyone is willing to spend money on finishing off this darker version of Terminator: Salvation

Would you pay to see it?

@connorblaze - No, because they don't own them, the studios do.

You see what Snyder and his cult did. WB puts out Snyder’s crap to shut them up and now every director with a crap movie wants to recut it and most of them don’t deserve some final cut approval.

Directors cut should not be needed to fix a movie. Crap is crap, even if its slightly better.

Good movies get directors cuts because they are worth watching more of and these cuts usually just expand on things, they dont add exposition that was needed from the beginning to explain the whole plot

@dracula - Well luckily this thing dies with Snyder cut being even worse than what we got.

Everything after T2 was mediocre at best. To bad Dark Fate bombed at the box office, people probably got bored of terminator movies

@RokoVII - dark fate was crap as well. If you want something good after the second movie, watch the tv show

@Se4M4NSt4ine - only bad movie that needs a director’s cut is The Room, funniest comedy of the 2000’s

speaking of crappy movies getting slightly better cuts, wonder if the cast of justice league get more money for the hbomax miniseries

@dracula - There on contract for the first job done, unless they come in to do extra filming of shots that they haven’t gone before I’m sure they will get some extra dough but a rerelease ... nah, very much doubt it

@dracula - I wouldn't think so. They were contracted to play a part and they did that. For instance, when a director comes out with a Director's Cut of their film with some new scenes included, I don't think the actors get more money for those extra scenes getting used. They did their part. They filmed their scenes. Its up to the director and studio to use what they want.

But who knows?

Bad movie, but out of all the Terminator Movies this is this only one I would come close to including as part of a trilogy with T1 and T2.

Salvation is flawed, but it's aging well. Compared to the sequels which followed, it's the only one which tried a different approach than the basic premise of Terminator-travels-to-past-to-kill-human-saviour and I can respect them for even trying that, especially without trying to toe in farcical humour. It was cool to see more of the post apocalyptic world of Terminator.

This series should have ended with T2, one of the greatest sequels (and action films) of all time

Doesn't matter how you cut this movie. The basic premise is fundamentally flawed, machines knowing about Kyle Reese and John Connor relationship makes no sense storywise. Saw this in cinemas back in the day, it was boring and the lack of Darkness really wasn't the problem with this flick.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/10/2020, 4:25 AM
@Odin - But, the machines knew about John Connor since the original. Of they knew 5o go back and try to kill Sarah Connor, then they would have known Kyle was the father.

Thats the problem with the whole Terminator franchise. It doesn't make sense other than saying its a time paradox.

Skynet couldn't have become a thing in the future that creates Terminators without sending a Terminator into the past to begin with. It was the original Terminator's hand and micro-chip that gave them the ability to create Skynet. So technically, Skynet shouldn't have even been able to exist, much less create Terminators.

And on top of that, John Connor was only born because Skynet sent a Terminator back in time, which then caused the humans to send back Kyle Reese, who ended up empregnating Sarah and giving birth to John. So if the machines really wanted to stop John Connor from being born, they should have just not sent back a Terminator to begin with.

The whole thing is screwy since T2.
