We all have out favorite movies and our favorite filmmakers. Let me show you My Top 3.

3. JJ.Abrams (LOST. Mission Impossible III. Cloverfield. Star Trek.)

This guy is really starting to make me go "ga ga". He's clearly a man of great talent who has created an amazing array of spectacular films. "Star Trek" was the film that I think showed everyone that this guy is a force to be reckoned with.

2. George Lucas (American Grafitti. Star Wars Series. Indiana Jones Series.)

As soon as the world saw that Star Destroyer pop out in the first few minutes of "A New Hope," we all knew the world was never going to be the same. Of course we all know his achievements and how he changed film making forever. I will say this though: the less he's involved with directing the better the movie is. He's a great storyteller, but not the best director. Still, he's a man forever immortalized.

1. Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins. The Prestige. The Dark Knight. Inception)

Most undoubtedly a true storyteller and a fantastic director, Nolan has revived the Batman franchise and has given us not just the best Batman movies of all time, but also the best movies of all time. He has an amazing eye for spotting talented actors and pushing them to their greatest potential. I read a recent article about Chris talking about his films. He spoke about the importance of a strong story in any film. Bale also mentioned in an interview that he would return for a third Bat-Film if the story was good enough by saying: "You can't make a good movie without a good story." I love old movies, sometimes more than these new ones, because of how they tell a story rather than amaze us with effects. That's what many filmmakers today are loosing sight. Nolan, and a few others, is one of the few that realizes that it's not just the quality of the film or the dazzling effects, but the importance of a strong story. And that's why he's #1 in my book.

Don't exactly agree with George Lucas, but, J.J. Abrams and Chris Nolan have proven themselves in modern films. Abrams is this generation's Steven Spielberg, while Nolan is in his own league.

George Lucas is a crap director IMO. He had luck with the first star wars movie which was almost a mess if it weren't for the help with editing. The other 2 were by different directors and indiana jones had Speilberg. He honestly hasn't really done anything directorial wise to gain praise, I think he makes a better producer if anything.

I haven't seen a Star Wars movie, so I can't comment on Lucas.I really like Abrams and Nolan, but they haven't been around that long. While they may currently be the most popular filmmakers, I can't say they're my favorite.I would have to make a longer list of 5 or 10, but I'm guessing they would be on it.

When you say filmmaker, are you referring to a director, or someone who goes hands on as producer, writer and director? When I hear filmmaker, I think of someone who creates the entire movie, not just the director.

My favorites over the last 10-15 years.
1.Joss Whedon
2.JJ Abrams
3.Christopher Nolan(not a big fan of his Bats, but like his other films)
4.Takashi Miike(favorite foreign filmmaker)
5.Quentin Tarantino
6.Kevin Smith
7.Robert Rodriguez
8.Jon Woo
9.James Cameron(minus Titanic)
10.Peter Jackson
11.Guillermo Del Toro

Newer favorites.
1.Matthew Vaughn
2.Zack Snyder
3.Timur Bekmambetov

A very talented director is Jame McTeigue I loved V for Vendetta I liked it more than the book and Ninja Assassin was a very fun movie.

Spielberg is probably the greatest filmmaker ever to live he has made so many good movies. George Lucas is probably second in that list.

Chris Nolan is a great director especially with Batman and Inception looks like it will be awesome to.

tazmaniak- I hope Wolverine 2 is good but what would make it even better is if McTeigue directed it because Gavin Hood the director of the first movie doesn't understand wolverine.

tazmaniak - 6/28/2010, 7:43 PM
My friend thinks McTeigue should direct it, as well.He says Wolverine should have been like The Bourne Identity and Casino Royale with mutant powers and Wolverine 2 should be Ninja Assassin with mutant powers.

@ecksmanfan, I'm not sure if alot of people here are like me, I enjoy action, sci-fi and fantasy more than drama, so I wouldn't necessarily put Scorsese or the Coens on my list.I think this article is skewed more towards comic book type films.

@ecksmanfan that's what I was thinking but this ones, I guess, are more related to CBM's and sci-fi movies. I for instance separate my favorite CBM and sci-fi directors from my overall favorite directors.

I don't get what the thumbs down are for. The guy is giving his opinion.
Those are 3 good choices, although these days George Lucas should distance himself from Star Wars and let other people take more creative control. He should be there to give approval, but maybe he should have given someone else more control of the new trilogy. You don't see Stan Lee trying to control movies based on his characters. (I know it's different since Lee isn't a film maker, but conceptually there is a similarity in creating something and letting it go)

All of them are great directors. Nice one buddy! Thumbs up! One of my favorites is Roger Corman!

I would say that Lucas is pretty much done. Likening him to Stan Lee is accurate. They're idea men. I don't think they're even very good plotters. His prequels were a mish mash of FX, poor writing, cartoon characters, and a horrible actor in Hayden Christiansen.
Abrams: the jury is still out. I found his re-imagining of "Star Trek" entertaining, but not great. We'll see how the follow-up goes.
Nolan: a true visionary. Not just with how he's handled Batman, but how he handles all of his movies. They just have a feel to them. That's a great signature to have. He is smart and creative by avoiding tons of FX. You really can't say enough about him.
The other interesting thing is to see if he "Return of the Jedi"'s the third film. I doubt it. You really never know.

Marvelguy@ I don't think Nolan is gonna do that. I bet he is gonna throw down another ACE on the table.
