BOX OFFICE: ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY Is Already Closing In On $300 Million Worldwide

Rogue One opened in 54 markets overseas this weekend, but has yet to reach big markets like China and Korea. Despite that, it's already earned an awesome $135.4 million , a figure which gives it the fourth highest December debut of all-time behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($281 million), Avatar ($164.5 million), and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ($138 million). That's a great result!

For those of you wondering, the top five markets were Germany ($12.5 million), Australia ($10.8 million), France ($10 million) and Japan ($7.9 million). The fact that the UK isn't mentioned here is surprising given the fact that the franchise has always been popular on that side of the pond, but the school holidays begin tomorrow, so many parents may be waiting to take their kids in the week.

Back home, Rogue One is on track to meet those estimates of a $155 million debut in North America as it scored $46.25 million on Saturday after a $71 million Friday. These numbers have given it the second best December opening after only The Force Awakens, and its current worldwide cume is $290.5 million. That's one hell of a haul for just a few days, and the sky is clearly the limit for this movie.

This is a fine edition to the Star Wars family of films. Certainly not among my favorites, though.

I love how easily some of you can declare a new film your favorite in a beloved franchise after just a few days. Happens all the time around here with new Marvel films (oh I loved when Thor 2 came out and there were people proclaiming how much they just loved it) and TFA. I don't know if that speaks to the quality of the new movie, the quality of the old movies, or the quality of your loyalty to the franchise itself.

Deserves every penny. Even though I haven't seen it yet.

It was good. I thought it was better than Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

@Darkknight2149 - Thanks. I'm hearing a lot of praise regarding the Vader scene. I'm Hyped!

We didn't see a lot of Vader but, from when he was in the film, he was great.
