BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Is Now Closing In On $2 Billion Worldwide

While it may not break Avatar's record at the worldwide box office, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is within touching distance of an amazing $2 billion. However, is it actually going to make it that far?

It's now become clear that Star Wars: The Force Awakens isn't going to beat Avatar to become the highest grossing movie of all-time, but does it stand a chance of topping Titanic? That's still not clear at this stage, but the J.J. Abrams helmed release has still done something no one ever thought it would be closing in on $2 billion at the worldwide box office.

After adding an extra $23.3 million internationally (for a total of over $1,060.7 billion, a figure which means it has now surpassed Jurassic World), The Force Awakens took an additional $14 million at the North American box office this weekend. That places it at #2 behind The Revenant and ahead of new opening Ride Along 2. Business has slowed down in China, but it's still made a solid $112.7 million in the Middle Kingdom. However, that surprisingly pales in comparison to its UK haul of $173.3 million!

Regardless, with a worldwide cume of $1.94 billion, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will definitely crack $2 billion, something it's fair to say is truly an epic achievement!

@Jollem But apparently matters enough for you to click and read the article. This is a movie website mate, and you're asking a question about why someone might be interested in reporting about the monetary success of one of the most successful movies of all time as if it's not news worthy. The question isn't why does money matter so much to Josh Wilding, but why it matters to practically anyone interested in movies, and their success....

I love how everyones just made up their mind that Star Wars can't defeat Avatar...

Avatar was rereleased a couple times to extend its box office. TFA could rerelease again this summer, or right before episode 8 and push its box office toward the 3 billion mark. Both of Cameron's top grossing movies have done this and TFA should consider it also.

@Magus:

Avatar was rereleased once, with extra scenes completed and added into the film, and that added only a tiny amount to the total box office. From Wikipedia:
"During its 12-week re-release, Avatar: Special Edition grossed an additional $10.74 million in North America and $22.46 million overseas for a worldwide total of $33.2 million."

Star Wars: TFA is going to need something like $700m more to match Avatar... Rereleasing it won't help make up that kind of difference.

No, that's only 5 weeks, since it's been released and it made almost 2 billion.

What's really sad for Lucas is, Disney paid a little over 4 billion for Star Wars, and they made over 40% of it back already, minus production costs, and that's just for ONE movie.

After all is said and done, I think Disney will walk away with 2 billion in profits for the whole trilogy, that's if, the last two films make around 2 billion each. I don't think they have a problem reaching that.

^^^George Lucas is a Billionaire, who's net worth is around 5 Billion dollars. I'm not sure he's really all that sad about the sale...

Actually it already beat the initial release, but if Disney leaves it in theatres or release it in the Spring or next Summer, it will

If you ever get to fly on Turkish Airlines it is amazing!!!!! Their jets are super clean.......their flight attendants are beautiful as hell!!!!!

And they freaking feed you some amazing food.....even if it is a 45 minute flight!!!!!!!

They put all U.S. airlines to shame!!!!!!!

That's... actually, if this is true, yeah. That's how they should do it.

Planet Hulk isn't interesting enough to be it's own film, but an escape-from-prison second act, keeping the hero away from the thing he's trying to stop in his film? Yes. This would be perfect.
