Proving that there is still life left in the box office, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings just scored another big domestic win. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the latest Marvel Studios movie has now crossed $200 million, which is a massive number in this pandemic era of box office takings.
Unlike Black Widow, Shang-Chi didn't debut simultaneously on Disney+, so this will likely lead to Disney now doubling down on the theatrical experience (and the financial benefits that come with it).
The movie, which stars Simu Liu as the MCU's newest Avenger, started by breaking Labor Day records with a $94.7 million haul. It also managed to break pre-pandemic September opening records - an impressive feat that arguably proves Marvel Studios can do no wrong critically or commercially.
Black Widow ultimately made $183.4 million domestically and $379 million worldwide. As for Shang-Chi, it's currently getting close to $370 million globally, which is an impressive accomplishment for a movie starring a relatively unknown lead and a character not even a lot of hardcore comic book fans are familiar with.
In our review of the latest Marvel Studios movie, we concluded by saying, "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is nothing short of action movie perfection; this is the MCU like you’ve never seen before, and it’s no exaggeration to say Simu Liu was born to play the MCU’s newest Avenger."
