Last year, Warner Bros. set a 2019 release date for Shazam, no doubt one of their most highly anticipated DC Comics adaptations. The four year wait feels like an eternity, but Dwayne Johnson has shared some very exciting news while promoting upcoming disaster movie San Andreas. 

According to the actor, we may not have to wait that long to see him play Black Adam, as he's quoted in the above video as saying: "No, I don't think it is going to be that far away. It's going to be earlier than that. I don't think 2019." This is great news, and hardly a surprise considering the fact that Warner Bros. don't seem to be anywhere near as organised as Marvel Studios.

It shouldn't be at all surprising to see some release dates shift as a result, and providing Johnson can clear his schedule, getting Shazam sooner than expected is far from bad news. Thoughts?

As cool as it is to hear the Rock talk about this movie so passionately for so long, I need to hear that other people are involved (screenwriters, a director, who's playing Shazam).

I don't like when a release date is set this far away and it just gets changed anyways. There's no point setting a release this early anyways then.

@TheAbaryMan369 Amen to that. It's basically why I doubt they'll make a Cyborg or Green Lantern film before a solo Batman film and Man of Steel sequel.

There's no point from a fan standpoint, but for shareholders and higher-up studio executives and bosses, they most likely want to have some kind of rough, tentative schedule for the projects still in the pipeline. Even if things change down the line (release dates, etc), it's always better to have some sort of plan.

They purposely didn't touch fall in 18/19. BvS is the go-ahead for the Batman and MoS films on those dates.

Haha despite the high amounts of shade being thrown by Josh, I actually do wonder if WB/DC is going to play fast and loose with their future slate of films. There's definitely a lot of benefits to NOT being stubborn with release dates and instead adjusting to the present situations as necessary.

we can all predict the future, and then later say I told you so.
but as it stands now, WB has a single dark and gritty movie out in their cinematic universe.

we'll see what's to develop. schedules mean nothing (at THIS point).

Say shit when you start production. This doesn't induce excitement really. Sounds like speculation or a guess on his part. Wish dccu had definitive date for Shazam. Its gonna be there most wild and craziest film I think. The premise is so fun and imaginative. Really get kids behind it. I'm afraid it may be beholden to snyder dccu dark tone. Shazam should be light hearted, fun and adventurous

WB has no plan. They announced dates at a stock holders meeting as part of the lies you norally tell to stock holders, that's all. Wb needs to sell DC to someone who knows what to do with them. #disgruntled

That's good to hear, even though he probably shouldn't be saying stuff like this. Regardless, I do think DC/WB is more organized than we know, it's just not as strict of a plan as Marvel's as of yet. There are benefits to that though, such as creative freedom for directors as well as a potentially more organic flow in the universe, and less of a stiff progression.

...or I could be completely wrong. There's no way to know.

In all honesty, the guy said "I think", which generally means you are not really sure, but you would like it to be that way. This is not a confirmation at all, and the author of this article is kind of being premature in saying "confirmed".
