SHAZAM! Director Reveals Why The Movie Didn't Open With The Traditional DC Comics Logo

Many fans noticed that Shazam! didn't open with the familiar DC logo, and there have been questions since then about what it meant. Now, director David F. Sandberg has now finally helped clear things up!

Films set in the DC Extended Universe tend to kick off with an animated sequence showcasing iconic superheroes like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman before the camera pulls back to reveal even more characters from the DC comic book universe. However, Shazam! didn't open with that, and there's since been a lot of speculation about why.

At the time, the prevailing theory was that it had something to do with the movie being released by New Line, and a sign perhaps that it wasn't supposed to be set in the DCEU proper.

During a live commentary for Shazam! on social media earlier this week, director David F. Sandberg finally put an end to the theories by confirming that he just forgot to include it. No one at Warner Bros. noticed, so the DC Comics movie ended up making it into theaters without the logo.

It was far from the worst thing in the world to happen to the entertaining 2019 release, and with numerous references to characters like Batman, Superman, and Aquaman, it soon became apparent that Shazam! was set firmly within Warner Bros.'s shared comic book universe.

Real Answer: DC didn't have much faith in the franchise or want to include it as part of the DCEU (especially if it flops). They handed it off from WB Pictures (their main studio that produces every big budget & DC film) to New Line Cinema (their low tier studio). Only reason why Shazam got made is their other DC projects weren't ready to shoot or get released in 2019.

To WB's defense the movie did okay and had a similar performance to BumbleBee. Not a great opening weekend or WW cumulative either, but its better than nothing.

I thought it was a fun movie personally in the end it's what matters sure it could have been a great movie but for it's first outing; not too shabby.

"I’ve seen various theories about why we didn’t have the typical DC logo with characters. Truth is I forgot. A lot to think about when making a movie."

That tells us a lot about WB/DC's quality control. Because someone at the top didn't notice -- or didn't bother to look at the director's cut.

@GeneralZod - maybe just more focused on the movie itself.

Why do they let the directors decide the logos? Todd Phillips also said that he deliberately decided not to include the DC logo in front of Joker. Somehow, I don't think this would fly at most other studios.

I wasn’t involved with Shazam obviously, so I couldn’t say with any authority, but I did work for a studio that produced films and there were people there, completely removed from the filming and editing of the movies (people who never would personally meet the director) who were tasked with acquiring and assembling all of those logos and animations that run at the beginning of a film to credit all of the studios and production houses involved.

There’s the creative side of a production company that is actually making the films, and there is an office side that is handling a lot of this kind of thing, often geographically nowhere near the filming side. I have no problem believing that the director never thought about including the DC logo... as he said, there’s a lot for him to deal with already. But I also feel certain that over on the business side of Warner Bros. there had to be discussions and decisions about it at some level.

Hahahaha I keep forgetting he didn't make Kung Fury. Of course no one in WB noticed their marketing logo/animation didn't show in the movie, it's extremely on brand. XD

@8thDoctor - reading this got me to do some digging. Apparently a full length sequel has already been filmed back in September, with Schwarzenegger and Fassbender and they are waiting for a release date.

The old Marvel logo was the best for opening movies. It was simple, looked awesome and had just a little build up that didnt overstep the opening scene of whatever movie it was ahead of.

That logo intro is lame as hell anyway. I'm glad he didn't use it. I miss the old one

Simple and classic.

@L0RDbuckethead - they JUST went through 2 redesigns in the last 10 years. The current one is on point if you ask me.

@Super12 - They're all pretty lame, IMO. But to each their own. Marvel has a lame logo too.

Sandberg is a great guy. And I just learned how he got the ticket to Hollywood. He deserved all the success. And he keeps giving back to the community.

Can we all stop pretending that the DCEU is even a thing?

It tells you everything you need to know about the state of that "universe" that it was named by a random journalist, who was making a joke, that desperate fans for some reason leapt on and clung to.
