Shazam! Movie Update

Bill Birch discusses his take on the film's tone, development and the involvement of. . . Ryan Reynolds?

CineFOOLS recently got a chance to talk to Bill Birch about co-writing the screenplay for Shazam! with Geoff Johns. Peter Segal has been attached to direct Warner Bros.' adaptation of the DC Comics series featuring Captain Marvel for three years.

The story centers on teenager Billy Batson, who transforms into a superhero when he says the word "Shazam!" In an interview in this October, Birch gives us some insight into the future of the project.

"Geoff and I are in the thick of it, creating a kickass update that still honors the lore that's been created in over 50 years of Marvel storylines," Birch told the site, adding that they are not using the previously-written scripts and starting fresh.

Birch remembers "being fascinated with the idea that a kid could just say 'Shazam!' and become a superhero. It's the ultimate in wish fulfillment and obviously that will be a theme in the script."

When asked if this project will be 'dark and gritty', Birch had this to say: "The way the story is shaking out, Geoff and I see this not as 'dark' as 'Dark Knight' but definitely as cool. It'll probably end up with a PG-13 rating."

He emphasized that the most important thing that he would bring on board to the movie is the overall tone. "Tonally I think it's important to successfully find the balance of comedy and danger in the story. That's a major aspect I'm focusing on. Frankly hitting the right tone is what's going to either get this made or keep it in development hell."

And what about the rumors of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson being attached as either the title character or the protagonist, Black Adam? Birch has this to say: "My rule of thumb is that no actor is committed to do a movie until the first day of shooting is over with. (And sometimes even then the cast can still change) I know that Pete Segal and Dwayne have a relationship that was solidified when Pete directed Get Smart. As far as him being committed? I'm sure it'll all depend on the script. That being the case I don't write with anyone in mind. If the characters are solid it will attract good talent and then there will always be a rewrite to address the talent's concerns. Usually at that point in the process is when you start writing for that specific actor. More than likely the role of Billy Batson will be an unknown but the role of Captain Marvel? I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have been interesting but now that he’s Green Lantern that’s not an option. Honestly I don’t think too much about it since I have very little say in the casting decisions."

Really have no interest in Shazam/Captain Marvel at all. I like him when he fights Supes in the JL cartoons and sometimes in certain comic team ups he's ok...but, just not into the whole little boy magically becomes a fully grown man-child superhero thing!

Shazam is cheesy enough to say, we don't need to have Ryan McCheesy Reynolds attached to it. Remember when Jude Law was in every movie? aRGHH!! Warburton is like the splitting image of Captain Marvel and he is a terrific actor. But he looks like he moves slow.

Alternately, I always thought it would be cool if they did the reverse of Shazam's character. When your an old, old man, you can have the same dream of transforming into a young hero. What if Billy Batson becomes an old man when he says Shazam! he becomes young and powerful again. That could be a great story.

LEEE777 I always thought Warburton would make a great Kingdom Come superman or Shazam. Now I think he makes laugh too easily and I couldn't take him seriously.

Either Owain Yeoman for Captain Marvel, or maybe Brendan Fraser, which I know people on this site would hate, but I honestly think, if he was younger, say around 30 (as he was around the first Mummy) he'd be near perfect for Shazam.

Captain Marvel is more of a boy scout then Superman is ... But i think the problem in today's society is that no one wants to believe that people can actually be genuine and nice and are willing to help another person ... everyone have become drones and scared of their own shadow... I think we should give the movie a chance to see what true potential of a persons Psyche should be... Plus Since Geoff is attached it is right everything he touches is gold ... ;-)

C - Way too goofy

D - Too cartoony of a voice

E - You can't take him seriously

Birch says he's "...creating a kickass update that still honors the lore that's been created in over 50 years of Marvel storylines..." and it's "...important to successfully find the balance of comedy and danger in the story..."? First off, Captain Marvel was created and successfully run by FAWCETT Comics (NOT DC!). He was more successful than either Superman OR Batman at the time! It was only AFTER DC ran Fawcett into the ground with a series of 'copyright infringement' lawsuits claiming the idea of the Big Red Cheese was stolen directly from the Big Blue Schoolboy did DC STEAL Marvel away and bury him in comic book obscurity.

Second off - '...COMEDY and danger...'?! WTF, people?! I say NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO - NO! Granted, Marvel 's early history was filled with the likes of talking tigers, fat wannabe 'uncles', and mind-controlling worms, but IF he had been allowed to properly evolve with the times (like two OTHER DC characters that come to mind that were JUST as campy for the period), he would be as three-dimensional and just as interesting as ANY in the DC universe!

To Birch and Johns - PLEASE take this SERIOUSLY! Give the character the respect he deserves! If you're going to turn this into a stupid kiddie show - WALK AWAY!

PS - Warburton is too old and out of shape. Molale is an unproven risk. And Shaman... NO, the Rock CANNOT play both Black Adam and Captain Marvel!

The Wizard has spoken...

SHAZAM!
