Jon Watts Reveals Which Comics He May Be Looking At For Marvel's SPIDER-MAN

In about 7 months, Spider-Man will make his debut in the MCU, which will be followed by a Marvel Studios-produced solo outing! Jon Watts recently shared a few details on which comics he may be researching.

Marvel Studios' upcoming take on their most popular hero, Spider-Man, is arguably their most eagerly-awaited project in the next five years outside of Captain America: Civil War and both parts of Avengers: Infinity War, which will all coincidentally also include the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler. Not much is known about the film's plot yet, but what we do know is that Tom Holland (In The Heart Of The Sea) will be the one who dons the iconic red-and-blue and Marisa Tomei (My Cousin Vinny) will co-star as his Aunt May. Additionally, Jon Watts (Cop Car) will direct with a script from Vacation scribes John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein

In a recent interview with Den Of Geek!, Watts shared a few details on which comics he may be giving a look as he prepares to bring the third live-action iteration of Spidey, in the last thirteen years, to life and it sounds like once again, Marvel will be looking at their Ultimate line of comics for inspiration. During the chat, Watts expressed his affinity for Brian Michael Bendis' Ultimate run and also mentioned the short-lived Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane as another comic series he likes. Read the full interview excerpt below:

Den Of Geek!: Obviously, your next job isn’t exactly a secret. You’ve been signed up by Marvel to work on the new Spider-Man with Tom Holland…

I was wondering, when they brought you in, did you just get involved with the Spidey reboot, or were they showing you where they were with Civil War and laying out all these big plans that they had for Peter Parker?

Jon Watts: Er, yeah. They’ve shot Civil War. That stuff’s done. But I’m here in the trenches now, every day, figuring it out.

DOG!: We’ve heard online that you’re going to bring Peter back to high school, and that we should to expect a John Hughes-y sort of vibe -

JW: Yeah!

DOG!: Have you been looking at any comics in particular to help shape that? Because, when I heard that, Ultimate Spider-Man was the first thing that sprung to mind…

JW: Oh, I love that. Ultimate is great. I love Ultimate. We have the freedom to pull from anything, but I really like what [Brian Michael] Bendis did. A lot. That felt like… that was Peter Parker back in high school. And, spending as much time with his high school problems as it did with his superhero problems, which I think is really a lot of fun.

There’s also some really funny comics stuff, like, the Archies. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the Spider-Man Loves Mary-Jane series, but they have this really great anime-style illustration, and it’s all just about Peter Parker’s relationships. It’s like the soap opera of Peter Parker in high school. Those are really funny, too.

I’m just sitting around reading comic books all day - it’s a pretty great job.

Based on his comments, it sounds like we will almost definitely see Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming joint-production between Marvel Studios & Sony Pictures. Also, here's a bit of speculation, with Marvel announcing three dates yesterday for three future untitled releases, it's probably safe to assume that at least one of those dates has been reserved for a potential Spidey sequel. Out of the three 2020 dates, May 1 & July 10 seem like the most likely days for a Spidey sequel to land, but if history is any indicator, May 1 should probably receive the slight edge at the moment. What do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!
