Adding Spider-Man to the MCU

Adding Spider-Man to the MCU

With the recent rumors combined with a recent reboot and complete over saturation of the market with Spidermen here's my ideas for how to introduce Spiderman to the MCU and maintain the realism and qualities of the MCU.

I firmly believe the number 1 reason behind the perceived failure or lack of success of the Amazing Spiderman franchise is the oversaturation of Spiderman.

First there have been several Spiderman related TV shows but the main issue is all of the movies. 5 SPIDERMAN MOVIES in 15 years. That's alot. Batman has had 8 in 45 years. Combine that with how similar the story of the first Spiderman was to the story of The Amazing Spiderman, and you get a public that's sort of over it. The public being over it, i believe combined with just not very good story telling in the 2nd Amazing Spiderman movie has put Sony in a rough place. Marvel can make money from Comics, special additions, an Avengers or other cross over, and toys from a movie and because it's Marvel they don't have to advertise as much. TASM2 barely broke even. Sony has discussed for years their willingness to try to get "Spiderman" into a marvel film, i think with the current financial situation they might be willing to either share rights and profits or sell a % of the rights back to Marvel. if this happens here are some things I think could allow Marvel to artfully introduce Spiderman into the MCU and give him his rightful place in the marvel universe.

1. Don't recast: I am not in love with Garfields portrayal. In a way i think he's too "this generation" He's very cocky but not deserved, not really creatively funny just funny in a "I'm cooler than you and I'm not nice" kind of way, and he is also very whiny and self involved. That said it's not Garfield as much as it's the writing. The whole "Love story" in the Amazing Spiderman, where he never said more than 2 words to Gwen made them both seem like morons. That said though another Peter Parker would just confuse people. That's not to say they don't reboot the back story and change some basic things about TASM 2. They need to change Osborn being dead, they need to change the whole Green Goblin Storyline. But if you recast it immediately becomes a reboot and it risks causing the problems that the Ed Norton recast did for the Hulk which is that it was not a very watched version of the Hulk, and still the least successful Marvel film

2. Introduce Spiderman on TV first: This to me is most important, introduce Parker, Mary jane, JJJ, and other intrinsic characters on AOS and the Netflix shows way before he pops up in a film. This will announce the connection but won't establish a connection specifically with those movies. Keep it vague. This will drive up interest in the TV shows, Explain the new york connection. And It builds interest in a possible Spiderman movie.

3. Have Spiderman (Not parker) show up in other movies: Not as an intrinsic character but be part of it. especially and Iron Man movie. Have Spiderman exist in their world and get interest up in the Marvel Universe.

4. Give Spidey his own movie and then kill off Peter Parker: this is going to be my most controversial idea. Spiderman needs a new story. There has been too many Peter Parker origin movies, and the big argument against parker in general is that Parker doesn't age, he never develops as a person. The One more day arc is the biggest example of this. What I propose is have a film where Parker is growing up getting married having a life finishing college and Miles Morales' origin story is told at the same time, at the end have Parker die and every subsequent Spiderman movie can be a young (high school then college) Miles Morales. YOu could also introduce Miles in the Luke Cage and Iron Fist movies as a side character on an episode without even making him a hero. This is valuable to the franchise because it immediately seperates Marvels Spidey from any Sony incarnation, it also allows for a Reboot in the distant future, and it avoids the retelling of the exact same stories from the first 5 spiderman movies. Infact the Spiderman film done my marvel could be called "Ultimate Spiderman" but I like the idea of calling it "Spiderman-the ultimatum" .

With these put into place i think the new Marvel Cinematic Spiderman would be off to a good start and could regain the public interest that has been obviously waining after the 5 films in 15 years that have also not all been very good, but allow interest in the character to survive for generations. Remember theres lots of SPidermen, not just Miles or Parker.

Am I the only one tired of Peter Parker? Forget the quality of films we've had for a second and realize that since 2002 (that's 12 years) we've been seeing Peter Parker in some way shape or form. I would much rather have a Miles Morales or Spider-Girl/Woman in the near future.

@cookiekid247- That's what my theory is on the franchise. it's not so much the movies it's parker. it's the same basic story and it's 5 movies in 12 years. how many times can you retell the same story? How many different ways can you say "With great power comes great responsibility". I think everyone is tired of Parker and Morales is a really different take on it.

@MexicanChinman- That's not really the same, first off the origin story for peter parker has been told twice in 12 years. Batman has had 8 in movies in 45 years and only had his origin told twice in the last 30 years. it's very different. With X-men the have actually never told the same story twice every movie has been a completely different story. There have only been 5 super man movies dating back 35 years that's not at all comparable. There has only been one Wolverine Origin explained. Parker on the other hand has had 5 movies in 12 years there is no comparison other than X-men and we are talking about completely different teams and these are ensemble films.

Erik and Charles for a reinvention without sacrificing the two actors best known with the roles so I'm cool with them. Bruce Wayne, yes. How many times must I watch poor Bruce get his parents shot? MOS was the first really good Superman movie to me so I'm anticipating the sequel really. And Wolverine is still entertaining as long as he's not the entire movie's plot.

@trickwill, there are many stories to tell with Peter Parker that have not been told yet. Tired of the same old movie? Blame Sony for not taking risks and trying to stick to a basic formula instead of being willing to make Spider-Man movies with a different tone. By no means have we even seen a quarter of parkers story, the main problem is with rebooting the story instead of allowing the character to enter a new realm in terms of his age and story. Miles morales is a cool idea but he is not spiderman. Stop retelling origin and beginning years and let us have a veteran spiderman movie.

@huckfinnisher- I don't disagree at all. I never said every Parker story had been told. But what I meant was Marvel needs a new invention of Parker without completely retooling and rebooting the same tired story. I want an adult parker getting married graduating from college. I had the idea that Peter Parker would actually be Miles science teacher. But I also think they need a totally different new Spidey perspective for it not to feel played out in the MCU. Does that mean Parker needs to stay dead? no. They can do a take off of the Scarlet Spider, or make Miles the scarlet spider. Either way I feel like Marvel needs their own version of Spiderman.

But if Parker were to become and actual adult and evolve past what he's been which has been 5 movies telling the same 2 stories I could get behind it in the MCU.

"I firmly believe the number 1 reason behind the perceived failure or lack of success of the Amazing Spiderman franchise is the oversaturation of Spiderman."

Though I take issue with the word "perceived" (though maybe you were just trying to be fair and not flame war-ish about it?), I do agree that it's certainly ONE reason why this franchise is failing...but I think the main reason has to do with how horribly-written both TASM movies have been so far. The plot has been a complete mess, pretty much every character has been massively inconsistent and unintentionally dickish, and there's no planning or long-term strategy whatsoever.

People would be willing to go along with these movies, even if there's been a lot of them recently, IF they had been any good. Saying that it's all due to oversaturation is kind of like giving these films a free pass, and that's the last thing these movies deserve.

SauronsBANE - 10/8/2014, 3:35 PM
Also, your ideas are creative and original and different...but honestly, all Marvel has to do is simply take Andrew Garfield's character from the TASM movies, and place him directly into the MCU movies, and it'd instantly be a raging success.

Seriously, that's it. Fanboys would be climbing all over themselves to see an MCU movie with Spidey in it, most of the general audience is knowledgeable enough to know that such an event would be extremely interesting and different, Marvel's writers would actually know how to properly utilize and portray the character in a faithful way...and so these radical suggestions wouldn't even be needed IMO.

@SauronsBANE- I'm being political in the article. Some people liked the movies and some would argue they were successful. Critics and most movie goers would agree. The reason for the success of GOTG is word of mouth and because it's marvel. Flame all you want about the final fight scene, every action movie doesn't need an epic fight at the end but it made a lot of money. Spiderman didn't make nearly what they needed in order to justify sinking more money into the franchise which is why they are going back to the drawing board. I feel that Sony's issue is just as you said poor writing. It's a poorly written series, and they are going the batman route of assuming we'll buy anything with Spider attached to it.

@SauronsBANE- I know that, I just think this would make it better and even bigger...but I agree with you they could just put Garfield into Avengers 3 with no preamble and people would poop.

Well, it's tricky to say it the right way--Batman has been pretty much just as saturated as Spider-Man (1992-2008 saw 5 Batman films, which is only a year longer than the window for the 5 Spider-Man films) but the Batman films have been more varied overall and in the last decade, far better-received by audiences and critics.

I do kind of like the idea of some of the Spider-Man characters showing up in a Marvel Studios TV show, although the Netflix projects with Daredevil/etc seem like they would be a more logical setting in which to see Peter Parker than Agents of SHIELD.

If Sony could make well-written, high quality Spider-Man films that did not repeat themselves so much, then they would be in better shape. As is, I would like to see Peter Parker show up in the MCU and would not mind seeing a different person take on the mantle of Spider-Man...but Sony needs to gut their franchise management team if they expect to find success with their own films again.

*sorry, four years longer for the Batman window than the Spider-Man window. My math went googly there.

But saying "8 films in 45 years" is misleading, because 7 of those 8 films occurred in a period of about 23 years (1989-2012) and the other film was way off the beaten path.

"...they could just put Garfield into Avengers 3 with no preamble and people would poop."

@Trickwil I'm not sure why, but that really made me laugh haha. And I hear ya, I kind of figured you were being a bit politically correct/balanced/fair there...but when it comes to these movies, I just believe there's really no point in sugar coating it, you know? The blunter, the better!

When it comes to Guardians of the Galaxy...yeah, the cliche' "epic" final fight scene is practically a given at this point, and not every movie needs it. But I believe the reason why people overlook that in Guardians is because it really meant something: it really gave the team the chance to really bond and work together for the first time. Same thing with the 3rd act of The Avengers. But in other movies...that extra layer just isn't there. It's simply a big fight scene for the sake of a big fight scene.

That's kind of my impression on the ending of TASM 2, as well. The only reason they shoehorned Harry Osborn is because they felt they needed to kill off Gwen Stacy. The only reason Electro even existed was to give the film the requisite amount of action set pieces until the climax occurred. Nothing happened because it was thematically relevant, or emotionally resonant, or even because it was the best idea at that time. Everything just smacks of "We need to this, so THIS needs to happen in order to get to that." It's like they were just obligated to do stuff. And that's really an awful feeling for a viewer in the audience to realize in the middle of watching a movie.

Yeah I'm rambling at this point haha. Not even sure where I'm going with this so I'll just leave it at that!

Recast, reboot, but no origins. Keep peter in high school for a few films, but no origins. Honestly think they should make it a netflix series, spectacular spider-man. Start with small name villians; shocker, kraven. And really show peters genius, make him an intern at oscorp. A few seasons in high school than graduate to a film.

@Scorpion8125, wrong, spiderman is more douchebag in the comics, and faul of marc webb? marc webb dont have any freedom in this movie, why is his fault that sony have the writers of transformers in TASM2 and mutilades of big part of the movie?

Garfield is great in the role, you want to tobey mcguire who look like the teacher of arts in spiderman 1?? NO thanks, no recast :D

@GliderMan Garfield is perfect to the role, and the comic bookk fans are fine with him who disliked the boring and emo peter of raimi.

I like Peter Parker but i would not want a reboot of the Spider-man franchise not because the current franchise is good because in no way are these films "good". Audience's do have a limit and get tired of reboots especially when the franchise is current and fresh.

I propose if Spider-man where to be in the MCU to just have him already established. Everyone knows about Spider-man's origin. Have a Spider-man film as a soft reboot or a re-imagining eg. TIH. A good director and good screen writers are needed along with a different cast, recast Peter Parker.

I don't think a television show of Spider-man would work but a film would be better suited.
