Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be a two-part story that pits Miles Morales against a surprising new villain in The Spot. A C-List baddie on the page, we're guessing he gets a huge power upgrade at some point that puts the entire Multiverse at risk.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller say Jason Schwartzman's Spot has the sort of powers that make him "a perfect character for animation."
"I like the villains best when they reflect the journeys of the hero — sort of a dark mirror of the protagonist," Lord adds. "And I think Spot's no different. He wants to be seen as legitimate. He's a character that has a silly costume and is not always seen as the top tier of Spider-Man foes, but like all of us, he wants to be taken seriously."
The latest trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse didn't include The Spot, but did show Miles squaring off with Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099. All signs point to Miguel O'Hara being the movie's big bad, and Miller has now clarified what the character brings to the table.
"He's not the villain of the movie," the producer confirms, "but he's sort of an antagonist to Miles because they both think that what they're doing is the right thing."
A new still has also been released featuring what we're guessing could be the teenager's first confrontation with The Spot. It's a cool piece of imagery from the movie, and one that leaves us desperate to see more. We're sure Sony Pictures plans to promote the heck out of this sequel moving into next year, though.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on June 2, 2023.
