SPIDER-VERSE And THE LEGO MOVIE 2 Got Better After Lord & Miller Left SOLO

For many STAR WARS fans, Lord and Miller's departure from SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY was heartbreaking. But without their firing, we may not have had the SPIDER-VERSE and LEGO MOVIE 2 we have today.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's firing was a shock when it was first announced. Many fans were pointing fingers in several directions, whether that be Kathleen Kennedy, Lawrence Kasdan or the directing pair themselves. Overtime, long after the release of the Star Wars spinoff, fans are still wondering what a Lord and Miller Solo: A Star Wars Story would have been like. But if that firing never happened, we may not have gotten the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Lego Movie 2 finished products everyone is raving about.

When Lego Movie 2 director Mike Mitchell was asked by io9 how the film was affected after Solo.

The storytelling got more efficient. [The Lego Movie 2] is really a complicated story to tell...so when they came back into town I felt like I had a couple more people to bounce story stuff off of. Not to mention those guys are hilarious so the film got funnier. Those guys can’t help but add weird gags everywhere.

Phil Lord furthered Mitchell's statement by adding

Obviously we were able to spend a lot of time on these movies and it’s, I think, our good luck that we got to spend so much time making movies we care about. And, you know, we were really passionate about both of these films and it was a real opportunity for us to be able to really dig in on both of them and be really involved in every aspect of the production.

Everything these guys touch turns to good. Solo could've been great

As much as I enjoy Solo, Lord and Miller's touch would have made that film far more special and distinctive. It does make sense that Lucasfilm would want to keep Kasdan happy though, considering their past.
Early reviews for Lego Movie 2 indicate that it's a bit underwhelming actually, too much recycled humor. I hope I won't be left disappointed.

Loved Into the Spider-Verse. Favorite CBM of the year. Lord and Miller are kings at taking ideas that sound terrible on paper and spinning them into gold. I wish we could have seen what they'd do with Solo.

They remind me of the Russo bros the way they can just enter a production and put forth the best version of the characters and really nail humor in a way that doesn't get repetitive or too cheesy. Makes me hope for a MCU project in their future. It'd be cool to see them handle their own character in a solo outing or maybe work on one of the Disney+ shows. I think the MCU needs some more of the Russo bros' type humor and less of the James Gunn/Peyton Reed type. There's gonna be humor in all of these films but they're going to have to use drier, more effective styles like Lord and Miller and keep changing it up to make it fresh.
