Madame Web concludes by teasing the futures of "Cassie" Webb and her team of Spider-Women, and that's where the movie - and this franchise if those box office numbers are any indication - ends.
There's no post-credits scene, a blessed relief if Morbius' stinger was anything to go by. In that, footage of Jared Leto and Michael Keaton was awkwardly pieced together to create a conversation insinuating they planned to team up and create a heroic Sinister Six.
Still, by not leaving anything extra after Madame Web's credits finished rolling, Sony Pictures managed to find yet another way to disappoint fans. Talking to ComicBook.com, director SJ Clarkson confirmed various stingers were considered and revealed why the decision was made to scrap them.
"We played around with some stuff, but again, I kind of felt like we'd said everything, but it was almost like, again, because I don't want to go into spoiler turf, but the way the story ended and then we have an ending and then something else," Clarkson explained. "I felt that I was kind of given something in the end, if you know what I mean. So when you watch it, you'll see."
"Because it's like there's the scene where we sort of end and then there's another thing, and then there's this scene, which could have been it," she added. "But then because she has clairvoyance, I was able to see it in the movie because she saw that credit scene earlier, so we might as well just have it upfront."
It's a valid point, but whether it was Mary Parker's baby getting a name or a glimpse at how the Spider-Women got their powers, Sony could have done more. Perhaps the biggest misstep was not linking Madame Web to any of the studio's other Marvel movies.
After all, as underwhelming as this adaptation may have been, we know a lot of you would be on board with Sydney Sweeney's Spider-Woman battling Venom or Kraven the Hunter, for example!
When we spoke to Clarkson earlier this month, she said this about whether she has any future plans for the Madame Web franchise. "Oh, I don’t know. I finished the movie yesterday morning so I’m still…we really worked to the wire so I’m very much looking forward to a rest before I think about what’s next or anything else."
"They’re all such amazing, brilliant actors and characters. I think because of that wealth and great plethora of comics, they can go anywhere."
Unfortunately, the only place this lot is heading now is bargain bins when Madame Web eventually arrives on Blu-ray...
