MADAME WEB Slips To Fourth Place At Domestic Box Office Following A Disastrous -64% Second Weekend

Madame Web has entered its second weekend in theaters and things really aren’t getting any better for Sony’s latest Marvel movie. In fact, it’s already slipped into fourth place! Read on for details...

It's a shame no one at Sony Pictures has Cassie's clairvoyance because we're sure executives would have preferred to pull the plug on Madame Web rather than face box office numbers like these.

During its second weekend in theaters, the Marvel Comics adaptation suffered a -64% drop to earn an estimated $5.56 million in North American theaters. However, it could have been worse; The Marvels, for example, plummeted by 78%, while Morbius dipped by -74%.

That's where the good news ends. By Sunday, Madame Web will have earned a mere $35 million domestically, a far cry from the $84.5 million and $73.8 million domestic hauls The Marvels and Morbius netted by the end of their respective runs.

As Deadline states, "Let’s not put lipstick on this. If you’re going to make a superhero movie going forward, really focus on it in development and hire solid directors. The theatrical business can’t afford cookie-cutter any more."

Bob Marley: One Love remained at #1 with $13.95 million, Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba - To the Hashira Training came in second with $10.8 million, and the top three was rounded out with Ordinary Angels at $6.5 million.

Sony will no doubt keep a close eye on how Venom 3 and Kraven the Hunter perform later this year; should they too fail, then it will surely be time for the studio to go back to the drawing board and start over with its Marvel offerings before the brand is damaged beyond repair (if it isn't already).

The chances of a Madame Web sequel aren't just slim, they're nigh on impossible. However, director SJ Clarkson was at least somewhat open to the idea when we spoke to her earlier this month.

"Oh, I don’t know. I finished the movie yesterday morning so I’m still…we really worked to the wire so I’m very much looking forward to a rest before I think about what’s next or anything else, but they’re all such amazing, brilliant actors and characters," she said. "I think because of that wealth and great plethora of comics, they can go anywhere."

Watch the full interview below.

Meanwhile, in another universe...In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines.

The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.

The movie stars Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott.

Madame Web is now playing in theaters worldwide.

Can we please as a community let Kraven and Venom flop. This universe needs to die more than the DCEU needed to. I’m not saying Disney is the savior for these characters, but they need to be unified with a spider-man for them to be done right

@DankMan - I saw Madame Web twice so I’m probably not the most reliable person for your endeavor but luckily no matter how many times I see a movie (within reason) it can still flop.

However I have a hard time imagining Venom 3 will make less than Venom 2.

@TheUnworthyThor - can I ask you why you decided to see it twice?

@DankMan - People know me as a comic guy and a movie guy and know I’m always up for either or both. I didn’t hate Madame Web as much as some though, I’m not calling it good or anything, I definitely wouldn’t of made some of the choices they did including giving the character a movie in the first place, but it’s not like one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.

@TheUnworthyThor - come on man, set some standards for the type of content you want these corporations to put out. I’m a comic/movie guy too but I’m not supporting sub par legally obligated films of characters that could be cool when done correctly or characters that shouldn’t have their own movies at all. No way venom makes more than the 2nd one either

@DankMan - while I get your perspective, it's really all the more power to @TheUnworthyThor

And this oddly makes me curious to check the movie out myself.
I personally hold an opinion that movies should be seen before being bashed, otherwise it's not much more than celebrated closed-mindedness...

I also admit I must have a different opinion than many others here because I saw The Marvels in theaters and on Disney Plus.

@Slotherin - I get being a fan of comic books and wanting to see them all, but I’m not sitting through garbage anymore. I’ll support films that deserve support
Slotherin
Slotherin - 2/24/2024, 9:45 PM
@DankMan - my point which I feel must have been missed is that it's hard to determine what's what if you never give it the chance/viewing in the first place
DankMan
DankMan - 2/24/2024, 10:59 PM
@Slotherin - in some cases, especially when I am hesitant about if a movie looks good or not, I use opinions from critics to make decisions on what movies to see. Crazy concept, right?

Madame web is a stream when it comes out movie at best for me.
Slotherin
Slotherin - 2/25/2024, 9:08 AM
@DankMan - I get it. Same time there's been movies that were panned by critics which audiences were more receptive to and by extension myself.

Morbius was a subpar film but not really a long shot from most early 2000s superhero films from my perspective, a bit different from the dumpster fire it's made out to be.

The Wolfman remake was panned for being an ineffective horror film which it largely was by modern standards but most critics besides Ebert missed that it was a tribute largely to the Hammer Horror era and in that regard it hit its mark.

I'd rather make my own opinions based on giving a movie a chance than invest too much in others' opinions. Crazy concept, huh?

@Slotherin - I’m not here to call your taste in movies crap (although you seem to have enjoyed Morbius so I hope nothing is wrong with you). I just won’t support trash franchises whose characters I’m fans of be absolutely butchered on screen for the public’s first initiation into the characters. I’ll save my money for movies that respect source material and tell a compelling and complete story. Not giving my money to lazy corpo legally obligated “films”
Slotherin
Slotherin - 2/25/2024, 12:32 PM
@DankMan - I just called Morbius subpar.
DankMan
DankMan - 2/25/2024, 12:34 PM
@Slotherin - sorry you feel that way. It’s much much worse than sub par and movies like that are killing the genre
Slotherin
Slotherin - 2/27/2024, 10:51 PM
@DankMan - bad movies are gonna happen in any genre and I doubt this one is being killed in spite of how dramatic many who indulge in it can be in their opinions about it.

What makes it worse than subpar and if I may gauge a reference point what would be subpar for you?
DankMan
DankMan - 2/27/2024, 11:02 PM
@Slotherin - If you can't tell why Madame Web is a trash movie, then your taste in movies may not have any hope left. Sorry bout it
Slotherin
Slotherin - 2/27/2024, 11:10 PM
@DankMan - I haven't even been talking about Madame Web.
DankMan
DankMan - 2/28/2024, 9:28 AM
@Slotherin - Morbius, Madame Web, it’s all the same crappy content
Slotherin
Slotherin - 2/28/2024, 12:19 PM
@DankMan - probably, but I still prefer to give a fair chance before writing it off.
Perhaps we enjoy different things about films; if I listened to critics I'd never have watched Super Mario Bros from the 90s.
But it's so bad it's good and holds a special place in my heart and some films are like that for people.
Morbius ultimately missed the mark on just about everything and yet it does have charm in how it manages to do so. A case of so bad it's funny. I can still see the parts that were fun or almost worked or could have had they pivoted differently.
I agree though that it's a shame to have the general audience's intro to these characters be mishandled so badly.
DankMan
DankMan - 2/28/2024, 12:32 PM
@Slotherin - so you like watching bad movies? Nothing wrong with that I guess
DankMan
DankMan - 2/28/2024, 12:33 PM
@Slotherin - Maybe just wait until it streams though so we aren't enabling corporations to make terrible super hero movies
Slotherin
Slotherin - 2/28/2024, 12:55 PM
@DankMan - honestly probably will. Like I'll be curious but I haven't the time and money anytime soon that I think I'll see it anywhere besides pirating. Nor the interest besides one person saying it has redeeming qualities to invest in watching it.

In response to bad movies, I like watching some bad movies. Some movies are unwatchable imo and some irredeemably bad and I can't be forced...
So-bad-it's-good is a kind of charm of its own.
Other times I try to apply shifting standards.
Like I think Jurassic Park 3 did everything it was supposed to do in being a more action oriented popcorn flick and cashgrab sequel. By the same standards of the first movie it's not as good... But for what it's aiming for it hit the marks.

I also think opinions on good and bad aren't well agreed upon.
People have been putting the Marvels on blast but I'm giving it a third watch and it's got a lot about it that works.
