Marisa Tomei Reveals She Wanted To Give Aunt May A Girlfriend Played By SPIDER-MAN Producer Amy Pascal

Aunt May dated Happy Hogan in the MCU, but things could have been different for the character, as Marisa Tomei revealed that she initially wanted to give her character a girlfriend.

Marisa Tomei recently made her return to the MCU in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Marvel Studios' take on Aunt May is considerably different from her previous counterparts. She's much younger, active and behaves more like Peter's friend, rather than a mentor. This fresh take on the character has been a well-received addition to the Spider-Man mythos. As it turns out, though, May could have been even more different than previous iterations, as, early on in the development of Spider-Man's MCU movies, Tomei proposed the idea of giving May a girlfriend.

The actress sat down for an interview with Geeks of Color to promote Spider-Man: No Way Home. During their chat, the topic of May's relationship with Happy Hogan came up. Tomei compared the characters getting together to two people being stranded on an island, as their relationship evolved more due to their shared experiences over Peter than a genuine attraction to one another. It was then that she revealed that, prior to the idea of Happy and May getting together came up, she wanted her character to be in a relationship with a woman:

"At one point — this was before even the idea of Happy showed up, there was a moment where I felt that May, maybe she should just be with a woman, because Ben is gone and, who should she be with? And we were kind of talking about it."

She elaborated further, revealing that she wanted Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal to play May's girlfriend as a brief cameo:

"I actually really wanted Amy Pascal from Sony to be my girlfriend. I was like, 'No one even has to know, Amy. I'll just be in a scene and you'll be over there and I'll just be like, 'Hey,'' and it'll just be like a subtle thing."

Giving May a girlfriend would have been a nice addition to her story, but having May be in a relationship with Hogan was also a good route to take her down, as it gave us further insight into her personality and was the source of great comedic moments.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently in theaters.

That's hilarious, Amy Pascal definitely has a wacky gay aunt vibe with her Ms Frizzle hair.

I’m fine with the idea of bisexual Aunt May, so something different why not but Amy Pascal is everything that’s wrong with these movies. She’s the new Avi Arad.

@Ha1frican - she is also one of the main people that pushed for the agreement with Marvel Studios

@Urubrodi - Yeah… after she [frick]ed up her reboot, had all her emails leak, and threw a sandwich at Kevin Fiege for even suggesting it. Everything she’s touched (aside from Spiderverse) without creative control relinquished to Kevin Fiege has been shit.

@Ha1frican -

1 - She made the deal with Disney to make Spiderman part of the MCU
2 - Her own production company made Into the Spiderverse
3 - She is the one who came up with the idea of bringing back actors from previous movies for NWH (confirmed by the actor themselves)

You hate her...why? because she doesnt work for Disney, or because she is a woman? or both?

@marvel72 - The moment his name popped up on the screen, I loudly reacted with “Are you sh*ting me?!” and immediately received a death glare from the girl down on the row front… I said what I said.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I honestly can’t speak about Amy Pascal’s involvement with Marvel, but just from her treatment of Ivan Reitman and later Paul Feig with the Ghostbusters reboot (2016), I’m getting a strong inclination that she may be a toxic individual. So while I appreciate that she’s trying to do something different and taking chances with her properties, I have to agree with @Ha1frican. Her execution and forced “creative input” leaves much to be desired

@marvel72 - as they should. Arad had the vision for all of the Spider-Man and other Marvel character films when Ike Perlmutter acquired Marvel out of bankruptcy.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I was with you until you insinuated they didn’t like her because she’s a woman. No you’re just pulling shit out of thin air to make it seem like you have the moral high ground. It’s lazy. Just stick to your facts and your arguments are sound.

@originalmrphil - as an opinion…..yes.

She has been known as a miserable person who can be extremely petty for years, but at least has the common sense to try and course-correct when she screws it up.

Same definitely cannot be said for Arad or Rothman by a any stretch.

Being a female plays no part in the equation.

@originalmrphil - Just read some of the comments, pure misoginy.

@MisterKite - Dunno, dont know her, but she is a competent producer, and has a good record when it comes to Spiderman adaptions (including one of the biggest BO hits in history with NWH, an Academy Award with Spiderverse, and now getting some credit for the cast of Andrew Garfield back in 2012).
At this point, I think she should get in full charge of this franchise, and Avi should retire...in fact, I think that message during the credits of NWH was because Avi is probably thinking about retirement.

@Ha1frican - "threw a sandwich at Kevin Fiege for even suggesting it"

Yall really taking this story and running with it arent ya? If anyone saw this as more than two rich big Hollywood execs shootin the shit and having fun with each other, then you really need a grip on reality. If it was as serious as people keep making it out to be, they wouldnt be joking about it in interviews.

Im pretty sure every female MCU actress wishes their characters all have girlfriends. We live in a society where men are being emasculated and women are taking on more male roles, notice all the unnecessary gender bending going on. Also notice Kingpin getting bested by the three women in 15 mins of his return after 2 years. This stuff has been blatantly obvious to me for awhile now.

@Matchesz - I still cant get over how Jeremy Renner couldnt get even a 10 second scene with Kingpin in a Hawkeye show but everyone else gets minutes. I thought Ronan disrupting Kingpins organization was a good set up, but what did we even get instead i dont even remember anymore
