Morbius is now playing in theaters, and, as per usual, a CinemaScore for the movie has been revealed. As we write this, the Marvel Comics adaptation has a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes courtesy of critics, but fans appear to have enjoyed it quite a bit more if that 69% Audience Score is any indication!
Regardless, Sony's latest Marvel movie has debuted with a dire C+ score from moviegoers.
This was generated from audiences polled as they were leaving the theater, so while it isn't something that really has any sort of immediate impact on box office takings, it is a good indication of what non-fans think. A CinemaScore can also often give us an idea of how much word of mouth will impact box office takings (which is more important than ever in this "pandemic era").
With a C+, Morbius now sits alongside Batman and Robin, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and Spawn. It's beaten the likes of Hellboy (C) and Fantastic Four (C-), but is actually the worst-received comic book movie in terms of CinemaScore's rankings since the latter was released back in 2015.
"Jared Leto’s transformation makes for compelling viewing," we said in our review, "but the Living Vampire can’t elevate a disappointing story that serves as a powerful, dare we say terrifying, reminder that Spider-Man is better off (and safer) in the MCU with Marvel Studios."
If you've seen Morbius, what grade would you give it?
