The teaser trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, just made me realise how much the Avengers has changed the paradigm of the comic book movie genre. Now other studios are trying to deeply delve into their properties and find some way to make them quite big and ambitious, which is only a good thing.
Aside from the teaser delivering on the central premise of that kind of trailer, making the viewer excited for the movie and getting it known to the public that this movie is coming. The teaser also raises a number of interesting questions and gives us a glimpse into a universe bigger than Spidey not just from the audience`s point of view but also Parker`s viewpoint within the movie.
This being that there are many more villains that Spidey has to contend with, some of which he is unaware of as well as the ones that he faces on a street level. This is addition to a story point presented in the trailer which is Parker being under surveillance coupled with a message from his father which spells out that Oscorp is the mastermind behind a lot of things, which is an interesting homage from the criminally underrated The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series.
In addition to this, there were two hints to what be coming and the broadening of the universe which is the Sinister Six. This is not only from that brief scene where the Man of Shadows from the post credit sequence of the last picture, is walking past what may be the Vulture and Doc Ock appliances but also a single shot of some numbered compartments opening and it shows the numbers 2-6 on top of them.
From a film making and marketing point of view the teaser is also very interesting. Its introducing to the public that Electro is not the only villain in the film, with Rhino and The Green Goblin making appearances, the former of which I predict will only be the film in the first 45 mins of the picture, while the Goblin will be in the last act of the film, perhaps being the emotional lynchpin of the film. This would certainly fit the tagline that has been seen on the recently released poster, which is “His Greatest Battle Begins”
Elsewhere the visuals thrill, including a great showcase of Electro`s powers within the last minute of the trailer as well as a great look at the new Spidey costume which looks very good. Apparently Hans Zimmer scored the teaser and the music is adrenaline inducing as well as slightly creepy and experimental but I am still on the fence about him scoring the picture. This is because I was a huge fan of James Horner's score from Amazing Spider-Man.
Harry Osborn joins the film and at this point it looks like Dane DeHaan might actually steal the show this time with his great line delivery and creepy presence within the teaser. Elsewhere, Andrew Garfeild looks solid as Spidey, he looks like he is going to be tested a lot in this movie and I have no doubt that he will deliver when it comes to these dramatic and emotional moments.
Overall, I think that the Amazing Spider-Man teaser trailer is very good due to it looking like its broadening Spidey's world, showing interesting elements with its use of multiple villains and a slick visual look that should excite just about anyone who is the fan of the old webhead.
