RUMOR MILL: Sony Reportedly Wants Sam Raimi & Tobey Maguire To Reunite For SPIDER-MAN 4

RUMOR MILL: Sony Reportedly Wants Sam Raimi & Tobey Maguire To Reunite For SPIDER-MAN 4

We're approaching hard-to-believe territory with this one, but a new report is seemingly suggesting that Sony Pictures is keen to reunite director Sam Raimi with Tobey Maguire for a Spider-Man 4?!

In "Rumor Mill," we share the hard to buy rumors that don't come from reliable sources like the trades, but are still more believable (just) than what you might find on Reddit.

As the wait for Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has been rumored to feature an appearance from Tobey Maguire, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which has Sam Raimi in the director's chair, intensifies, the rumor mill has never been hotter, and the latest report is a potential bombshell that could reshape the entire future of the Spider-Verse.

Like always, take this with a huge grain of salt - maybe even with a whole box of it - but Giant Freakin Robot (who have had a few scoops pan out in the past) is reporting that Sony Pictures has expressed interest in bringing back both Raimi and Maguire for a potential fourth entry in their Spider-Man series.

Whether that means exploratory talks have already begun is uncertain, but according to their sources, the hope is that Raimi would return to direct a film they believe will also feature Maguire, and use it as a launching off point for Spider-Man 4. However, unlike the Holland series, this hypothetical project would be its own thing, and would only reference the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe in passing.

How the presence of an adult Spider-Man would affect the future of both Marvel Studios' and Sony's plans is also unclear, but it could open the door for one Spider-Man (Holland) in the MCU and one in the SUMC (Maguire), potentially setting the stage for showdowns with Venom (Tom Hardy), Morbius (Jared Leto) and others.

While it's not impossible to believe that Sony would want to further expand its live-action Spider-Verse (more likely with the eventual MCU debut of Miles Morales), this rumor seems increasingly hard to digest, especially given the way both Raimi and Maguire parted ways with Sony when the studio foolishly opted to reboot the franchise instead of carrying on with Raimi's vision after Spider-Man 3.

Plus, we still don't have any official confirmation that Maguire will actually appear in either No Way Home or Multiverse of Madness, so this rumor very well could be based on nothing more than wishful thinking.

@KingPatel - man if this was going to happen I'd be sooo pumped.
The Raimi trilogy is still my favorite live action adaptation of the characters.

I could totally see a story with an aged Peter Parker training a young Miles and going up against Kraven

@Blergh - Mr. Ditkovich was supposed to be revealed as Kraven in Spider-Man 4. His popularity has increased tenfold since 2007, if they make Mr. Ditkovich Kraven I’ll [frick]ing go insane.

@KingPatel - Still, let's not forget that there was a reason that Raimi decided to quit back then. He just couldn't make the story work.

One of his last drafts was reportedly even a complete disaster.

It doesn't surprise me. Sony is desperate for fan goodwill. If they gave Sam Raimi's Spiderman 4 they'd definitely gain a shit tone of support

So are we.

We are also expressing interest.

@FoiledCranium - This would break the box office, most MCU fans range from children to adults in their 20s. Spider-Man 4 would bring in that crowd along with everyone else who grew up with the Raimi films.

That would be great but Tobey Maguire is 45 years old now can't see it happening.

As much as I would love this, it’s just not gonna happen. Even IF Sony was willing to do it, I doubt Tobey would want to do a full action movie again.

I can totally see Raimi coming back to do a Spider-Woman movie though. Imagine it... a movie following Peter & MJ’s daughter (who would be around 16-18ish by the time this gets made) who discovers that she has her own set of powers.

@DaHyro - would prefer that too. Have the focus on Mayday Parker, but still have Maguire around as Peter Parker

I have said since the rumor of the 3rd Spider-Man including the multiverse. Not saying it will be Spider-Man 4 or Tobey, but there will be a Spider-Man for Sony, and Holland will stay in the DISNEY MCU. There would be loose connections between the two at best. Everyone wins.

Honestly I think this is a great way to bring in live action Miles Morales. Let this be Tobey Maguire Parker's final fight. Full on Raimi film aestheic, Elfman score soaring. Have him die at the end and make Miles the new Spider-man. Then you can do multiverse stuff with Holland.

Pay me in bitcoin, Sony, you crazy bitches

DaHyro - 4/7/2021, 5:49 AM
@ShellHead - I don’t really like the idea of Miles in the Raimi movies.. I always loved that those movies were self-contained and only focused on Peter. Plus, Miles didn’t even exist when those came out.

Besides, the MCU is gonna do Miles in like 10 years anyways.

I really doubt we'll see this. I can see Maguire returning as Peter Parker, but not as Spider-Man in a solo project. Maybe in a live-action Spider-Verse, but that's it.

Same goes for Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man. I can see him return for Spider-Verse, but afterwards a new character taking over. For Garfield that would be Miles Morales, and for Maguire that would be Mayday Parker.

@99OPTIMISTPRIME - I hope that never comes to light, Miles Morales is just a rehashed Spider-Man.
