RUMOR: SPIDER-MAN 4 Could Mix Street-Level Story With Multiverse; Updates On Andrew Garfield's MCU Future

Some intriguing new details have emerged about Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures' hopes for Spider-Man 4, while we also have a cryptic update on where things stand with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

We continue to hear conflicting reports about plans for Spider-Man 4. Recently, there have been suggestions Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are butting heads over the movie, with the former wanting a new director (likely Drew Goddard) and the latter keen to bring Jon Watts back into the fold.

Sony is also anxious to get the Spider-Man: No Way Home follow-up into theaters next year, likely with some sort of Multiverse element so they can capitalise on the box office drawing power of three live-action Spider-Men sharing the screen.

Marvel Studios, on the other hand, hopes to tell a street-level story.

The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez has since chimed in to share an update. "So far what’s been out there is accurate," he says. "If I had to give my input, it would be that a middle ground is being negotiated by having the story involve both elements. And right now, Sony’s aiming for a 2025 release, which would be very unlikely to work at this current stage."

The most interesting takeaway there is the mention of a middle ground; does that mean Tom Holland's Spider-Man will enlist the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Variants to help take down The Kingpin? We're not sure he's a big enough threat to warrant that, but without knowing more, we can only speculate.

As for Garfield's future as Peter Parker, Perez cautions, "I really don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up with this because the chances of him getting a full blown movie are very minimal. A continuation of his story is 100% coming but it’s not going to warrant another film at this point in time."

Asked if the same applies to Maguire, he responded with a GIF saying, "It's a little bit different." Take that as you will!

Spider-Man 4 is clearly in a state of flux so, for now, it might be best not to read too much into anything. We're hoping creative issues don't cause too many problems and that, most importantly, this thing isn't rushed out in a mess just so Sony can reach some box office milestones after Madame Web flopped.

"The story never ends," Garfield previously teased. "Whether we film it or not, there's a story happening in a universe somewhere, there's endless potential with this character and other iterations. So yeah, he's definitely out there doing something."

Right now, we expect the heroes to share the screen again in Avengers: Secret Wars, if not sooner...

@Doomsday8888 - I think it did work with Into the Spider-Verse really well, but this would just be the same movie with Peter instead of Miles as the main Spidey

If they wanna do another multiverse Spider-Man movie, I rather just see them leave Kingpin out of it. It worked with the 2018 movie, but this would just feel like a retread.

Think they should just make it a multiverse movie set on Battleworld then, as I'm assuming Avengers 5 ends with everybody being transported to Battleworld. While there, the three Spider-Men could then fight the villains from Sony's universe.

Grounded IN the Multiverse?

That's the definition of an oxymoron.

@BillyBatson1000 - What about MCU Peter being corrupted by the symbiote and it opens his mind to the Hive Mind of the Klyntar race? And in doing so makes Peter/Venom desire to bring the other symbiotes to Earth by creating a Multiversal engine that would allow every symbiote from every universe to enter and take over one universe at a time. With all of it being orchestrated by Knull.

@SonOfAGif - As 'all encompassing' as your idea is - selling it to the average popcorn buyer? Its too big. too grand.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 3/2/2024, 1:21 PM
@BillyBatson1000 - Arguably the entire Multiverse Saga is too big and too grand. Using Venom can keep it street level and Multiversal at the same time without making it too big and too grand.

BillyBatson1000

@SonOfAGif - Absolutely agree on the first bit. Me personally? I haven't made it thru an entire Venom film. Great cast but it's too gonzo for me. Just not dark enough or structured. For your idea, they'd need to really work on Venom.

Back in the day, when the original Superman comic sales plateaued, they realized the character had become boring. They'd made him too powerful. There was no situation they could conceive where Superman was at genuine threat. No excitement. No cliff hangers. He'd just use one of his many powers and prevail. Until they invented Kryptonite - and it was game-on again. They limited his powers (grounding) and sales picked up.

The Multiverse is kind of like that and time-travel plots. Whatever happens to the hero (or the villain) they can just go back and choose another outcome. And yes, you can add a scene where you 'break' the time-machine/multiverse portal device, but for the average audience, that's really unsatisfying. Just knowing that such a possibility is baked-into the narrative is a major weakness.

Now when Daredevil gets stabbed or beaten down: you feel it. You know he needs time to heal and rebuild his physical skills. You're ON the journey with him. He's breakable. No second chances. Spilled blood stays spilled.

The more you do multiversal stuff, the less special it becomes.

@ClintThaHamster - I feel like it’s fine to do it infrequently but maybe not make it the overarching story of your phase.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 3/3/2024, 1:19 AM
@TheVisionary25 - That's actually how multiversal stuff was handled with the Arrwoverse: infrequently and because it was spread out almost annually across 20 + episodes over 8 months that a Season of these DC shows lasted. Even more when it involved crossovers. And besides Flash S2, it wasn't always the over arching story of their storylines. (Flash or others)

Maybe the Multiversal is better saved for TV than films if they followed this structure.
KWilly
KWilly - 3/2/2024, 6:57 AM
My guess... The grounded parts will be in relation with the villain. I'm gonna go with a mobster type guy like Mr. Negative, Tombstone, or Kingpin.

The multi-verse stuff will be in relation with the Venom symbiote left behind at the end of NWH. And will still be voiced by Tom Hardy.

Perfect way for Marvel getting to have its cake, Sony gets to have their cake, and the general audience along with fans would be excited to see.

This is a profoundly stupid compromise.

Do one or the other. Better than that, just do the street level, save the multiverse stuff for Avengers 5. Even better, don't do anything at all! Marvel should just abandon Sony. [frick] 'em. Poach Lord and Miller for Secret Wars and really screw Sony for good.

Then buy Spidey back for way less than their current asking price (which I think is a ridiculous $8 billion).
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 3/2/2024, 7:33 AM
If true then Sony gonna Sony i guess…

They really can’t just let a good thing keep going , they just have to sit back and be out of Marvel’s way so that they can ultimately reap the reward but they just have to rear their ugly head into everything.

I hope Marvel don’t compromise and get to tell the street level story they want since NWH set that up perfectly imo but I do likely think this will be the case since Sony does somewhat hold power & can yank the character from the MCU anytime they want.

Have faith in your characters! End this multiverse garbage and get on with your stories. I can only speak for myself, but the multiverse is just becoming an excuse for bad writing. It is really going to turn me off of the MCU
slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 3/2/2024, 8:15 AM
@Izaizaiza - how about continue the multiverse because that’s not a bad concept but let’s pay for good writers and give time to make a good script.
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 3/2/2024, 9:26 AM
@slickrickdesigns - Bad writers are definitely a huge issue, but I think that the multiverse is a spice best used sparingly...not to build an entire interrelated story arc on
Slotherin
Slotherin - 3/2/2024, 1:22 PM
@Izaizaiza - in fairness, plenty of these stories haven't relied on nor even connected much to the Multiverse.
So far besides the Marvel's which only had it at the very end, only Wandavision, M.o.M, NWH, Loki and Quantumania have dealt with it, with FFH alluding to the concept and Quantumania only using it to account for Kangs.
They had to set it up and familiarise it to then wrap it up.
