David Ayer comes in for a lot of flak for Suicide Squad, but most would agree that the casting of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn was a stroke of genius.

Ahead of the character's return in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, the director has taken to Instagram to some new photos he took of Robbie in costume just before production got underway on Suicide Squad.

According to Ayer in the accompanying caption, these shots were "part of an extensive make-up and wardrobe process" which saw the Aussie actress endure "endless trial and error" in order to perfect Harley's final look.

Check out the previously unseen photos below, and compare Harley's original outfits with her new (and improved?) look with a bunch of previously released Birds of Prey promo posters.

It's still weird and dumb but it's not as bad as it was in the movie if not only because she's not literally filthy.

Wasn't that the line they fed us recently about Leto's Joker?

They got it right for one half second of fan-service. Which makes me mad because it shows it can work in live action.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Yep. It's not just in live-action, other incarnations of her like in the Arkham games and the New 52 put her in costumes that feel more like something I'd see in Deviantart than in something official with the character.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - But they want to sell 3-4 halloween costumes not just one. It's all about selling merch

"Part of an extensive make-up and wardrobe process" which completely ignores everything great about this character.
