SUICIDE SQUAD Star Scott Eastwood On Larger Role In "Ayer Cut" And Why He Wasn't Back For The Sequel

Scott Eastwood was once set for a key role in the DCEU, but the actor has now explained why he didn't return after Suicide Squad and what David Ayer has told him about his larger role in the "Ayer Cut."

Talk of the "Ayer Cut" of Suicide Squad went away for a while, but it's come back with a vengeance in recent weeks. Now, Scott Eastwood has become the latest actor to speak out on David Ayer's original vision for his 2016 DC Comics adaptation during a recent interview with Insider

The actor, who played soldier GQ Edwards but was at one time rumoured to be Steve Trevor, told the site that the filmmaker had big plans for the newly created character. "He basically was like, 'Come on this journey with me. I'm going to make you look like a badass. I'm going to make your character pop," Eastwood recalled. "I didn't even know what the character was at the time."

"I have talked to David, and I know my character got a lot more love in the Ayer Cut," he added.

In the theatrical cut of Suicide Squad, the A.R.G.U.S. agent didn't bring much to the table and is thought to have died off-screen after setting that charge in an effort to stop Incubus. Whether he would have lived in the "Ayer Cut" is hard to say, but if Warner Bros. did kill Edwards off in reshoots, then it could be a result of Eastwood refusing to sign a multi-picture deal with the studio.

"They didn't want to pay me any money for those next movies and they didn't have another script for the other movie, so I didn't know what I was going to be signing myself up for," he explains, before recalling a conversation with his father Clint Eastwood. "I said, 'They don't want to pay me.' He said, 'If it feels like they really need you and if it's a good part, then do it. If not, then don't.'"

"I didn't have the answer to those questions at that time," Eastwood continued. "I wasn't going to have the answers, and they were pressuring me. So ultimately it didn't happen."

There's nothing to suggest James Gunn wanted the actor for The Suicide Squad regardless of whether he had any sort of sequel option. However, it's entirely possible he would have been asked to reprise the role of GQ in the version of Suicide Squad 2 that Gavin O'Connor was once developing.

didn't he [frick]ing die in the first one? That would be a pretty good reason not to be in the sequel

A made up character with a low chance of survival. I'm surprised he made it out of the first one, tbh. Ayer might have let him live in a sequel but seeing how Gunn did everyone else, he would have almost certainly died on the beach.

Right move and no big loss.

@inkniron - He wouldn't even have been it it. This was in the period WB was trying to be Mel Gibson and Gavin O'Connor to do Suicide Squad 2. If he had signed that multi picture contract, he still would have been right there with Katana and Killer Croc.

This guy playing hardball was DC/WB brass is lol hilarious. Even if he was someone of note he’s still way outta pocket. Having his fathers name got him in the door but his acting kinda sucks

Why Scott Eastwood continues to get roles based solely on his acting ability--and not his family ties--is beyond me.

@tylerzero - I could see him as Wolverine!

Remember when people were guessing he was Robin undercover? Lol… then Leto’s Joker is the Robin the original Joker supposedly killed… sometimes the fan theories are better than the movies, this was one of those times.
Also why is Eastwood selective of his roles and how much he gets paid? Dude isn’t in a position for negotiations. Next time just take the role, would’ve been fun to see him killed off in the opening scene of the Suicide Squad.

@slickrickdesigns - he was also rumored to be Deathstroke and Amanda Waller’s personal bodyguard. Nobody thought he was going to be “Forgettable Soldier #3”.

I genuinely forgot he was even in the movie. Remember everyone being convinced he was secretly Nightwing? Lol

Has he gotten better as an actor?

He was ok in Wrath of Man but for the most part, he's not really been that memorable in any of his roles. He definitely doesn't have the screen presence his Dad did.

He didn't stand out in that film at all. Then again, it was a complete shitshow.

He'd be a better Cyclops or Angel. He's no Wolverine.

@SummersEssex - No offense to James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, who I have liked in other things, but we need a Cyclops with enough natural charisma that not seeing his eyes doesn't make him bland. Eastwood would be a worse Scott than Logan, although I don't want him for either.

I remember when he signed and it was a big thing "oh, who's he's playing? probably is gonna be somebody important" and then I watched the movie and he is "A.G.U.S. AGENT #1" - I really don't remember his name and remembering his name wasn't gonna change anything. If Ayer wanted him to be a big part they would've casted him as someone important on the comics, the side characters of the first movie couldn't have even been supporting characters in a spin-off like Economous and Harcourt did in Peacemaker
