SUICIDE SQUAD 2: James Gunn's Instagram Post Seemingly Confirms Comic Book Influence

It seems James Gunn will indeed be using John Ostrander's run on Suicide Squad as inspiration for his sequel/reboot. Is that a clue for Idris Elba's new character, who is speculated to be Bronze Tiger?

Just as James Gunn stated that DnA's (Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning) run on the cosmic Marvel comic book inspired his Guardians of the Galaxy films, the Brightburn screenwriter was previously said to be drawing inspiration from John Ostrander's classic stories for his Suicide Squad sequel.

However, it should be noted that Gunn never used a specific DnA storyline for his cinematic take on the Guardians, instead, he captured the spirit of their books and then twisted and morphed those ideas into something more in keeping with his own filmmaking sensibilities. It's likely that something similar will occur with Suicide Squad 2, aka The Suicide Squad

THR reported a few weeks back that Gunn would be looking to Ostrander's run on the title, and his latest Instagram Story (screenshot because Instagram Story posts disappear after 24 hrs) appears to confirm that will be the case. With Idris Elba initially hired to replace Will Smith as Deadshot before a purported script rewrite elected to have Elba portray a new character, most fans are expecting Elba to play Bronze Tiger, a prominent Suicide Squad member during Ostrander's run.

Ayers movie was supposedly inspired by Ostrander's run too. Then theres the rumors of Gunn wanting them to face off with a giant female alien.

Need them to confirm the roster too.

So what then? No Deadshot? Will Smith still gone?

I wonder if Rick Flagg is coming back. Hopefully he is, I didn't mind him in SS. He worked well against Will Smith's Deadshot.

@Super12 - I thought it had been confirmed he was? Maybe I’m just imagining that

Suicide Squad was so bad that not even James Gunn being involved with the sequel can generate interest from me.

@obredaan - ok... so I’m just gonna come out and say this and probably get a lot of hate for it, but... I thought Suicide Squad was more entertaining than Doctor Strange and Ant-Man & The Wasp!

Looks like the Suicide Squad are going to Qurac to fight the Jihad. I imagine they'll probably change the name of the terrorist metahumans though.

@blackandyellow - That’d be cool, American Sniper/ Zero Dark Thirty with The Squad...

If Idris Elba is Bronze Tiger I’m excited to see how that goes. Loved Micheal Jai White as him in Arrow

Glad Shazam did well, I just continue to be wary of DC's exec decisions. We're getting a reboot to an awful film from not even 3 years ago and we still can't get a Superman sequel, don't have a definitive Batman and pretty much every villain besides Orm, Manta and Sivana are most likely going to be shelved/rebooted for the near future. So no Justice League anytime soon, no established villains to team up anytime soon. What happens to that poor guy's Deathstroke he's been promised for years? Eisenberg's Luthor? Leto's Joker? Darkseid? Anyone? I like the newfiund success, but the only thing I like more...is a PLAN.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I think I'm just happy the movies are getting better. I'll take my large sprawling planned out MCU, and be happy if DC can just put out good movies with less connective tissue. It kind of speaks to the strengths of each in the comics as well, where DC has always been very flexible with one-off stories, so I'll take it.
