Currently, James Gunn is hard at work in pre-production on a second live-action Suicide Squad film from Warner Bros. that's been described as both a reboot and a sequel. The conflicting reports and statements even have the title of the film shrouded in confusion as to whether it's Suicide Squad 2 or The Suicide Squad.
One thing that has been confirmed is that Jai Courtney's Digger Harkness will be returning, as he recently revealed that he was given a copy of Gunn's script ahead of filming. But it seems the Aussie actor panicked a bit after that interview, as he was unsure if he was supposed to reveal those details.
"I felt a bit weird the other day when I dropped that because it was funny I was just like ‘Yeah, I’m coming back,’ and I couldn’t even remember if I was supposed to say that or not. For a long time I wasn’t even sure if [my return] was going to be the case or not," said Courtney while speaking to Collider.
Courtney continued, "I got sent the script. It’s a great [script], I was surprised by everything [in it]."
In regards to the conflicting reports, Courtney's next statement implied that everything is in flux (like Idris Elba being hired to replace Will Smith as Deadshot before being switched to a brand new character) so what you read today might not necessarily be true tomorrow.
"I don’t really think anyone knows what’s going on, I don’t think anything you read online is going to help clear anything up and nothing I’m going to tell you today is going to help clear that up. People who’ve read the movie and people on Gunn’s team know what’s going on. I think there’s still room for changes to be made yet, I don’t know. I don’t want to take any responsibilities for letting cats out of bags and I don’t know who’s sensitive about what’s being revealed."
Suicide Squad 2, or The Suicide Squad, is slated to hit theaters August 6, 2021. Along with Courtney, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Viola Davis' Amanda Waller and Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag are currently expected to return. New characters expected to debut include King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher, and Peacemaker.
