James Gunn has a knack for recruiting previous collaborators for projects. Whether that be Michael Rooker, or the fact that The Suicide Squad's crew was purposely built up from the best members of both Guardians movies, it's clear that the director very much values loyalty. This continues with the announcement of Tyler Bates as the film's composer, a partner of Gunn's who has been working with him since 2006's Slither.
On Wednesday, Film Music Reporter broke the news of Bates' involvement. The composer's stacked resume also includes the likes of Netflix's The Punisher, Deadpool 2, Zack Snyder's Watchmen, and Fast and Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw. David Ayer's 2016 iteration of Task Force X saw the involvement of Stephen Price, who is not returning in the film composer capacity.
Though expected, this is nonetheless an exciting addition to The Suicide Squad team. Bates' Guardians of the Galaxy theme is glorious, and his resume isn't one to knock either, working within every single lane of the comic book movie spectrum. With the Guardians films, Bates' music was written far before production even began, so it would not be a surprise if this process stayed the same for the 2021 Suicide Squad sequel.
