THE SUICIDE SQUAD Star Jai Courtney Says James Gunn's Movie Isn't "Necessarily Even A Strict Sequel"

The Suicide Squad is clearly going to be a very different movie to 2016's Suicide Squad, & Captain Boomerang actor Jai Courtney has now emphasised that it's not "a strict" sequel to that first instalment.

It's been clear for a while now that The Suicide Squad is part-sequel, part-reboot, and star Jai Courtney has now further muddied the waters.

In an interview with Collider, the Australian actor praised what James Gunn is bringing to the table with this spiritual successor to 2016's Suicide Squad, while also making it clear that it's by no means a direct follow-up to David Ayer's movie.

"It’s a big-ass movie again, as was the first. It’s cool to see a bunch of new characters and characters [Gunn] plucked from the depths of the canon, which is cool and just kind of different and interesting," the actor teased. "James like creatures and monsters and things as well. I felt like there was an injection of that kind of stuff with this take on it. It’s very funny."

"It’s what you’ve come to expect from this kind of film. People are going to have a great time with it. It’s sad to see some of my cast mates not involved, but I’m so thrilled to welcome a whole bunch more in," Courtney continued. "And I think it frees up the direction this franchise can take. It cracked things open in a way that we now won’t know what to expect from the next time."

"That’s cool for something like Suicide Squad. It’s not necessarily even a strict sequel, is the truth. It’s different, man, but people are gonna have a ball with it. I hope it’s massively successful."

These comments echo what Michael Rooker recently told us about The Suicide Squad, and it's clear that Gunn is going to really shake things up with Task Force X and put a fresh spin on the characters.

It's interesting that Courtney mentions creatures and monsters, especially when there appears to be evidence that Starro will be the movie's lead villain. We'll just have to wait and see, though.

Does anyone really care if its a sequel or not.

There are two good suicide squad movies, and the Ayer movie is not one of them

@dracula - You don't have to care, but it's STILL a sequel no matter how much they want to forget the first film.

Like seriously, a PG cartoon pulled off the Suicide squad better than Ayer

a pg cartoon also handled the joker/harley relationship better

seriously that universe of shows of shows told more mature stories than any of the dceu films by Snyder and Ayer

It won’t address the first movie but isn’t going to go and reintroduce the concept again I’d imagine. At most you might get Harley mentioning deadshot or something

''It’s sad to see some of my cast mates not involved''

After having watched The Boys, I too am sad that Karen Fukuhara doesn't return

@bkmeijer - She should get a HBO Max series.

Katana is probably too much for a solo movie, but a tv show about a street level hero, would be cool.

@DARKSIDEIS - you’ve seen Guardians 3? Tell us great one, what is the future like? Do we get past this pandemic or not??

@Se4M4NSt4ine - Given that Guardians 2 was almost exactly the same as the first one, I think it will be bad :/

Überfunny and very corny

@DARKSIDEIS - jokes a side... I do think Guardians 3 IF it originally came out when it was supposed to, would’ve been a bit of a let down.

However, with it being pushed back some more, and Gunn doing new things and coming back to it refreshed, amongst a further developed MCU than where it was originally slotted to release, I hope he has clarity returning to the franchise level headed to adapt his original script a little more.
