When it was revealed that James Gunn had been tasked with writing and directing
The Suicide Squad, it was widely reported that the
Guardians of the Galaxy helmer would reboot the franchise.
However, we soon learned that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn would return, while Idris Elba was tasked with suiting up as Deadshot in Will Smith's place (that later changed and the actor will now play a newly created character). Since then, a number of other original cast members have confirmed their own returns, including Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) and Jai Courtney (Boomerang).
Now, Joel Kinnaman has taken to social media to reveal that he'll be back as Rick Flag, the man who led Task Force X into battle in David Ayer's
Suicide Squad. The fact he appears to be actively training for the movie may go some way in debunking theories that the original cast members will all be killed off in the opening few minutes, opening the door for a new, quirkier team of villains.
Whatever the case may be, it's great to see some of the originals returning and easy to imagine Gunn taking them to some fun places when he enters the DC Extended Universe for the first time.
