Chris Columbus to Direct Superman?

Does WB want the Harry Potter/Percy Jackson director to take over the Man of Steel?

Hello. I am a new member to this site, but I have visited it quite often. I felt like this was an appropriate time to join! Now, down to the news... Superman Homepage is reporting the Chris Columbus of the first two Harry Potter films and this year's Percy Jackson movie is being targeted to direct the new Superman movie.

As we know, Warner Bros. are aiming to have a new Superman movie released to cinemas before the end of 2012. A source inside the studio has revealed to the Superman Homepage that an "offer has been sent out to Chris Columbus to direct the 3D Superman reboot for December 2012".
Columbus, who directed the first two "Harry Potter" films for Warner Bros., is reportedly considered "the right fit" for the Man of Steel by those within the WB and Legendary Pictures.

Christopher Nolan will be producing the film, from a script written by David Goyer.

"David Goyer really wanted to direct but nobody from either studio think he's good in that arena," reveals the studio insider. "He's great at coming up with story and ideas, like George Lucas. It's his execution where he's weak which is why people like Chris and Jonathan Nolan and Guillermo Del Toro have had the best results with his scripts."

Whether Chris Columbus takes up the offer, or even if said offer really exists, will be revealed in time.

I think this could be a good idea, as he has proven that he has the skills to produce a great movie adapted from a different medium. However, does he have the chops for the Man of Steel, or should he stick to movies that center on teens?

I wonder how that would work?Columbus is a prominent producer/director who has been around over 25 years.I can't see him working under the creative direction of Nolan, who has only been around for the lat few years.

I haven't seen much of his work, but I like this entry from Wikipedia:

"The character types preferred by Columbus are the everyday American men, women and children who struggle to uphold family traditions against a changing, sometimes intimidating society. In 1993 he said: "I can understand the validity of showing people the ugliness of the world, but I also think there is a place for movies to leave people with a sense of hope. If your film isn't going to do that, I just don't think it's worth making.""

I really think that's the direction a Superman movie should take. That's a great attitude for the filmmaker to have.

Chris Columbus is actually a pretty good option for director. He knows how to bring a certain level of "heart" into his films, and can film action sequences fairly well. He's not who I'd initially have in mind to direct this movie, but if he did get the job, I'd be pretty satisfied

Great first article @tim3186, and Welcome to the Jungle!

Chris could do it. It seems David got told that his directing sucks and the studios shot down his dreams.

Not buying it. By "it" I mean Columbus, I can totally see WB shutting down Goyer, because, let's face it, the guy has a terrible directing record.

Eh...doesn't really tickle my fancy, but there are worse choices out there. Ratner anyone?

Jeez - the guys films are just so cold and corporate feeling. He directs by numbers.

Would be really surprised if the Nolans picked this guy.

Why not give it to Tarentino. That would be one kick ass Superman. We might actually see Supes just punch right through someones head. jk =D

Nice take on the story... part of me wishes Richard Donner was doing it... he was the only one who ever got it right the first time.... but then, I was always a fan of his two Superman movies.

Teabag - the unique thing he managed with Bicentennial Man was making you feel like it was shot in real time! That movie felt like a good couple of hundred years of viewing!

I love Bicentennial Man. Maybe 'cause I was huge into Asamov in high school.

Considering that not only will Geoff Johns be involved as a consultant on this as well as the fact that Columbus will have to follow a script written by David Goyer and verseen by Christopher Nolan. I'll give him a shot.

tarantino would also be a great choice. he loves comics and he referenced superman in kill bill. as for colombus, if the script is good, he will do just fine

Columbus is good. I like many of his films. I actually thought the first two Harry Potter are the best of them all. Not action-wise perhaps, but yeah, he gives the story hearts. Same goes for Bicentennial Man.

The Lightning Thief I haven't watched. I plan to when it comes my way. I think it looks interesting.

However, taz has a VERY good point. I don't see him working under the direction of Nolan, either. There is this ego thing involved here. So, I kind of don't read too much into this rumor.

Welcome, Tim! Good find!

@ Ron: Agreed I sometimes feel as I am still watching that movie. I saw it in school for robotics and it took 3 1hr & 45 min classes to finish it......I don't understand how....

@ Tea: Hes not forgiven for A Night on the Town either, just doesn't get a lashing. BUT YOU CAN STILL GET ONE ;D

If this is true he could uphold the values but we are going to get a 3 hour Superman movie that will take 7 hours to finish. I'll make sure to get a good nights sleep and see this in late mourning after a hardy breakfast to get through the entirety of this film.

So... they get Nolan to produce because his Batman films were dark and gritty yet realistic... and they publically state that this time around, they want to "unleash" Superman... and the ONE guy they think of to direct this dark, gritty, realistic and unleashed Superman... is the "Home Alone/Mrs. Doubtfire/Harry Potter" guy?

Don't get me wrong though, i personally think the man has a lot of talent and experience and even though most might not agree on here, i've enjoyed quite a few of his family films including the ones i already mentionned. Hell, some of them were instant classics! But none of his films fit what WB seemed to be going for. I really don't see what Columbus has that Singer doesn't. I wouldn't even be surprised if he wanted to keep the superkid around when we all know that its the ONE thing that needs retconning the most!

Now if WB is back peddling to make the next Superman film a light hearted family film à la "Lois & Clark", which i personally wouldn't light torches & sharpen pitch forks for, then i don't think they could have found a better director. But i would HIGHLY prefer a more young adult oriented film with plenty of action directed by JJ Abrams. I wouldn't want him to write it, but i don't think there's a better director out there to turn this aching franchise into an action powerhouse that isn't just about "Baysplosions".

Please. God. No. More. 3D. Seriously, I can't wait until this fad dies off again, just as it did in the '50s and the '80s.

As for Columbus? I've seen things he wrote or directed that I enjoyed, including the Goonies (one of the many classic films of the 80s), Mrs. Doubtfire, and Young Sherlock Holmes (even if the ending was a little silly). Another movie he directed I didn't see mentioned- the classic "Adventures in Babysitting", which should be in your Wal-Mart's $5 bin- money well spent if you've never seen the movie.

Columbus might be a nice counter-balance to Nolan. I'd damn sure trust him over bringing Singer back. We'll see if this turns out to be true.
