James Caan Talks About Passing On SUPERMAN & STAR WARS; Badmouths Harrison Ford

Legendary actor, James Caan ("The Godfather"), was a guest on Howard Stern's radio show and addressed rumors of famous movie roles that he passed on, like Superman and Star Wars' Han Solo. He also takes an entertaing shot at fellow actor, Harrison Ford. Check it out!

Howard Stern is one hell of an interviewer. He has such an amazing ability to slice through the typical b.s. responses that are typically given by actors. At the 15-minute mark in the video below, Stern asks James Caan about passing up on the role of Superman/Clark Kent in Superman. A role made famous by the late, great Christopher Reeve ("Switching Channels"). Caan confirms that he was offered the role. He then describes the tongue-in-cheek Superman that was originally written by Mario Puzo ("The Godfather"). That tone was changed once director Richard Donner was hired, and then he brought in Tom Mankiewicz to polish the script, giving it a more serious tone, with Christ-like overtones.
When Clark Kent is just devestated cause she (Lois Lane) is so in love with Superman. Physically the office is setup in the paper (Daily Planet)... In order to get to Clark Kent's office you must pass through Lois Lane's office. So, there is no other way in. So, one day Clark is so pissed off (laughs) that she is in love with Superman, he says, aw screw it. And he rips his clothes off and he's got his Superman thing (costume) on under there. And he says, "Lois, come in here!" She comes in and looks at him, "That's sweet Clark, but you're no Superman." And she walks out. He looks and the mirror and says, "Maybe a little tuck here." It was all tongue-in-cheek.

He even says, that award-winning actor, Marlon Brando ("On The Waterfront"), who Caan worked with on The Godfather, begged him to join him on Superman.

Another role that Caan supposedly passed on, was Han Solo in George Lucas' Star Wars. Caan says he didn't pass on it, but more interesting is that this subject spawns some unkind words about Harrison Ford. Caan claims that Ford slighted him, which infuriated him. This part of the conversation takes place at the 18:50 mark.

There were a lot of overrated big actors in the 70's and as time went on and they got more roles it became obvious they were never very good.
James Caan's acting is what I would call passable to mediocre. I've never see him do anything any other actor couldn't do.
He has no charisma or screen presence. He's all ego.

And he's got to be some Momma's Boy to still care if Ford called him 'John' over 30 years ago.

Just shows he's lived a pretty easy life to care about something so minor.

Caan is an ass. Everyone knows that. Ford probably ignored him because Ford is a classy guy.

Stern is absolutely the best celebrity interviewer alive.
He gets the best stuff out of people.

Caan is a hard ass dude, old school tough guy.
Ford is reserved guy so I can see how their personalities don't mix.

So he calls Harrison Ford arrogant ... Yet his main problem with him was that he forgot his name and Caan called him a "little extra".

Hmm kinda disliking this guy now.

YinYang and MedDeth. Neither of you know who James Caan is. Using terms such as "mediocre" and "talentless nothings." Wow! I would rate your commentary juvenile at best.

By the way, I would say Caan was too old to play Superman. Good actor though, if you actually watched him.

Only a few of you probably saw The Brian Piccolo Story. Caan was fantastic playing the Chicago Bears running back who died of cancer. You can love Star Wars, but Harrison Ford is not God.

In all reality I watched the making of Blade Runner and Harrison Ford seemed like he could be a dick but the important thing is that he acts exactly like Han Solo. To me, that is [frick]in awesome
