Disclaimer: Everything I say about the suit is purely opinion, we all have an opinion on the suit and I wish to respectfully express mine. So in the comments I ask that everyone be respectful of each others' opinion.

The way I’m going to do this is basically a breakdown of the suit looking at the individual aspects of it then look at it as a whole.

SUPERMAN MOVIE SUIT:

Logo: The S shield in this particular adaptation of DC Comics (arguably) Greatest Super Hero, Superman looks like a slight mixture of the Earth-Two and Earth-One Superman logos and the Earth One Shield. While the shield has made itself popular among fans there is a charm for it that works while also making me suspicious of it, as it seems to be made out of the same material of the suit, but also looks as if it is raised, this is just an odd look to me, don’t get me wrong I like the shield being raised but it just seems a bit odd that it’s made like the rest of the suit but also raised. It’s not something I’m going to take points from, it’s a small detail that means nothing, the point is the shield is there, and while it seems new it’s also homage to the Siegel/Shuster Era. All in all the score for this: 10/10

Texture of the Suit: Noting that the texture is a form of spandex/tights bring relief as when hearing Snyder had been chosen as the director I had believed that he might use the classic suit, or the DCnU Armor but made from neoprene or rubber (which I'll be honest I would like to have seen for its execution) As the movie is certainly showing itself removed from the five previous films I am glad they're going the route of using tights for the main character's outfit. Despite not liking the dark shade of blue it could be used so it will be lighter on film. The material looks good though very foreign from the previous Superman films which looks like this film will emphasize his human and alien nature. Score for the Material of the suit: 10/10

Cape Design: It’s a red cape, the material looks beautiful, but it still could be better just by adding the yellow “S” Shield on it. But aside from that 8/10

Arms: OK I’m going to be honest why does Superman need gauntlets? The design would look really OK if they were gone they don’t look necessary they make Superman look like he’s attempting to be fashionable. Not a fan and since it would be so easy to get the design of his arms right I’m taking down heavy points, I have been generous though. Score: 3/10

Torso design: The Torso Design itself is rather plain; I’ll admit the design on the side gives it the feeling of an alien design and hints at the suit’s origin in the film. I do like the idea of expanding a design to feature his heritage, but maybe make it more organic to him and not there for the sake of being a new design. All in all the Torso design is easily has a Score: 4/10

Lower Half Design: Much like with the Torso design a problem with this is that the design around his waist seem rather pointless or “designed for the sake of a design” look and doesn’t feel all that alien. Score for this bland area is: 2/10

Trunks/Belt: Another big qualm with this design for me is the lack of any red incorporated into the lower design. I understand the lack of trunks, but I don’t understand the lack of any red to break up the large blue jumpsuit. Also think about how pointless the belt is, and the design of the belt which is ugly and pointless on this design, at least with trunks the belt had a purpose; hold them up. Now without the trunks they’re just another piece of pointless design. Now I’m not begging for any trunks, but the suit in this area seems too blue, and a little red just to add color is much needed. Score 2/10

Boots: The boots to me are alright nothing to write home about. But for some odd reason the boots remind me of the Animated Series Superman look. I can’t explain it, I can’t really justify it, it just is… Anyway score for this is 9/10(Pending upon release of trailer for a more official look on it and the color)

Muscle Appearance: This is a category cause this is the only real Superman suit to go for the “you can see his muscles though the suit” look on film and television. This is an interesting thing cause he’s always been represented as having a massive amount of muscle in the comics that would often showcase his muscles. I’ll just give this a score of: 10/10 just because its new and creative for Superman yet obviously a used and well received concept.

Presence: While part of me says this does feel like Superman, part of me is disgusted by its bleakness. Now it seems nearly unanimous that the red trunks’ being gone is good. It seems unanimous that the design is amazing. And it also seems unanimous that this could be the best Superman film of all time. But it feels like I’m looking at concept art here. I don’t really feel it being 100% Superman. It doesn’t look like Ma Kent sewn it by hand it just looks like a new generation styled Superman, but that is the clear message presented and intended. The presence Cavill and the Suit have isn’t daunting and does not inspire me or give me hope, but a trailer or the film itself could change that so I’m scoring this one: 5/10 (Pending on Film Release)

Overall: The overall scores for this outfit are: 10/10, 10/10, 8/10, 3/10, 4/10, 2/10, 2/10, 9/10, 10/10, 5/10. Which represented in a final score comes to: 63/100

Final Words: I’m not 100 percent sold on this suit. I’m 63% sold and to be honest with all the work has been done I'll still see it, it is Superman after all.

Nice analysis on the suit. It's growing on me, but I still have some doubts. I'm still a bit 70/30% on the suit as well. I mean, it's a nice way of introducing a new take while remaining familiar with the uniform but it's still missing obvious qualities. Many wanted to see the return of the yellow \S/ shield, myself included. Let's face it. The belt on the costume isn't a real belt. The gauntlets aren't necessary. He's not Wonder Woman. I like that the cape is longer, gives him more of a savior vibe. There should have been some time of red to break up all of that blue on his lower body. Overall, I think Henry Cavill will be a extrordinary Superman for this new generation.

I agree with you on most points here, mostly on the S Shield on the cape and the need for the red to break up the suit, but I overall love the direction they're going with here. I agree that it is a completely new and different look for Supes, and I believe it will turn out amazing after post-production and the like. I would rate the costume maybe a bit higher, probably 75/100, but that's only because I think some of the things that would be nice on it really aren't that needed, such as the shield on the cape. And yeah, Henry Cavill seems perfect for the role, and I can't wait to get a Superman that could possibly do justice to the role.

Well isnt the point that this film is about the early years. Therefore this is superman suit mark 1. Plenty of time for suit to evolve

@lightraptor: What if the suit doesn't evolve? They could make seven sequels and three spin offs to this without changing the design of the suit. There's no rule that the suits have to change through the course of a superhero's movie series. Look at the Spider-Man trilogy or the original 4 Superman films. Just because the suit changed for Ironman, basically all of The
Avengers members, and Nolan's Batman doesn't mean it will for anybody else.

I agree with syronian, I don't think the lack of a yellow shield on the cape is really that big of a deal. It would actually take away from the mysticism of the cape. I think its perfect the way it is.

The overall costume? I would give it 7.5/10. It's different and I like the new take. Though I do miss the red trunks and a real belt. But this new design is growing on me though it will never top the original imo.

I'm so glad that they didn't decide to go with a red belt, either a yellow belt or nothing. Red belts just look weird.

Oh, and people seriously need to stop making that "That suit doesn't look like it was made by Ma Kent!" argument. That is probably because she didn't. They are going a different route with this. The suit is obviously from Krypton, how he obtained it? We'll find out when the film comes out.

This is a different take and right off the bat we clearly see that this isn't a suit made by Ma Kent, unless she went to college and studied costume design which I highly doubt.

Awesome article. Anyone know if their was a suit like this used in the comics?

Question: how the hell does he get out of that suit? I mean literally how does Clark get out of that suit? lol. I'm not talking about Henry and the production team, I'm saying the literal character of Clark.

Meh, it'll "do", I suppose. It's blue, it's got an S-shield, a red cape, and red boots. But it's bland. Way too much blue, as the article states, there really should be some red around the waist. I also think it looks like Cavill's wearing a foam latex body suit under the Superman suit, which he probably is. They could have just tried to make it look a bit more organic and natural. I only sat this because his arms look out of proportion to the rest of him. Tobey Maguire had a muscle suit under the Spider-Man suit and that looked natural, why can't this? I like the article though, a good breakdown of an opinion.

@GDsuperguy: you have to admit, I'm not bashing the movie, but it looks mighty hard to get out of that suit lol

I still don't like the new suit. I don't think I ever will. I think the classic design is the best. That doesn't mean I won't enjoy the movie, and who knows, it may or may not be the final version of the suit in the movie. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Suit looks like shit! Funny how people mocked Smallville's t-shirt suit as not being Superman yet give him a blue scuba suit and red cape and blam!

@johnnynapalm that looks great but I'd leave off the gauntlets (gauntlets don't look good red if you ask me) and brighten the red if i was using something like the movie suit.

Looks a lot like what's underneath the Jor-El suit in the pics of Russell Crowe. Those pics didn't reveal a lot but it's there.
