What's Next For Superman?

The DCEU is now 2 movies deep, and we have got to spend quite some time with Superman, but what should they do with him now?

The following editorial does contain spoilers.

We now have two movies in the DCEU about Superman, both helmed by director Zack Snyder. His take on the character is definitely something we havent seen explored on the big screen, but it has been explored over decades in the comics. With the character having met his fate at the end of Dawn of Justice, let's discuss where Superman should now go in the DCEU, villains, and future directors!

In someone else's hands, Superman could greatly benefit from a Brainiac-focused sequel. So many potential ways to build upon the themes and character development begun in Man of Steel.

I am of the belief that Warner Brothers desperately need to start over and pretend Batman v Superman never happened. While I generally thought Man of Steel was OK, Batman v Superman made me appreciate that movie a LOT more. Thank God it was a Nolan story or there is no telling how bad it would have been. I would incorporate the Nolan Dark Knight Batman into a Superman sequel that takes up after the events of Man of Steel and that focused more on the Superman and what he means to the world. There is no need to bring in Doomsday at this point or even Darkseid. Just get a better Lex Luthor (named Mark Strong) and turn the page on Snyder's nightmarish vision of the DC world.

BvS was a travesty for everyone involved. I would also start to have the Superman Wonder Woman (with a different actress) relationship develop and axe the relationship he has with Amy Adams. From the beginning I thought she was a bad pick as Lois Lane to be placed next to Cavill and I think her career is going to suffer for this trash movie. Every time they were together in BvS I would cringe. Make it simple, realistic, with subtle humor and cohesive and it should be fine.

Great ideas bro! I totally agree.

Except Brainiac is a JL villain in my eyes, and I don't see him the same way you either. The Brainiac you described falls in line with my perception of Darkseid. He is the one who has no appreciation for life and is a destroyer. I think Brainiac is much more similar to Superman. His entire mission is to preserve life and study it. I think it would be amazing if they made Brainiac a servant of Darkseid, who salvages cities from planets Darkseid plans on destroying, so that there is some remnants of their culture before it's completely obliterated.

But that's just me, though I did like Superman: Unbound, and the Brainiac from Superman: The Animated Series is SOOO amazing.

@kong - I think Brainiac works better as a Superman villain, at least initially, particularly in light of how Man of Steel set up Krypton and Jor-El's attitudes and hopes for Superman. I think they are reflected in Brainiac. Let me explain.

Jor-El is Krypton's premier scientist, who repeatedly warns the Council that they should look to the stars for Krypton's salvation. Like Zod, Jor-El believes that Kryptonian society has decayed tremendously, resulting in the present catastrophe. They stifled the social and intellectual development of Kryptonians through their genetic-based caste system. That is the reason why Kal-El exists: to forge his own path, to be free to come up with solutions to problems outside of a rigid society. And Jor-El dreams that his son would not only build a better world on Earth, but that he would help humans to avoid Krypton's mistakes so that one day, he can help humans "accomplish wonders."

Now enter Brainiac, who's had three major interpretations:

1. In the Golden Age, the alien Brainiac shrunk cities to repopulate the planet he ruled.
2. From the Silver Age to Crisis, Brainiac was a sentient super-computer that took over his creators' planet and sought to overcome every opponent by gaining technological and biological data.
3. In the New 52, Brainiac is a near parallel to Jor-El: a scientist who fails to convince his leaders of impending planetary doom, and thereafter captures a city's planet and the artifacts of its culture to preserve its civilization.

Now imagine a Brainiac who is a near parallel to Jor-El: once the premier scientist of Colu who tries in vain to prevent his world from going down a destructive path. Resolving to prevent worlds from following the same path as Colu, Brainiac scours the galaxy stealing cities from developed worlds at the peak of their cultural, scientific and technological development. In doing this, Brainiac attempts to build his own perfect world out of essentially a "museum" of different civilizations -- that develops and progresses under his guidance and direction, unlike the Coluans.

The kicker would be that Brainiac, in stealing Kandor or Argo or whichever Kryptonian city to immortalize Kryptonian civilization, would have triggered the end of Krypton's Age of Expansion and brought about the societal decline that he tries to prevent and that Jor-El and Zod attempted to reverse.

So you'd have a twisted hybrid of Jor-El, Zod AND Superman rolled into one, who causes the very thing his actions are meant to prevent. And in that you could throw in Lex's idea that Superman -- who wants to help humans to reach their potential -- is stifling that potential simply by being on Earth.

But most importantly, I think such a take on Brainiac could actually serve to advance the story and character development that were introduced in Man of Steel, in a way that hearkens back to the main themes established for Superman in his origin story. And you could throw in all sorts of ideas about the nature of human progress, the freedom to "stumble and fall," and the role of Superman in all of it.

@DerekLake - And I'd love to see that Brainiac....in a JL film. But like I said I wouldn't be upset, especially if they did it like you're explaining.

But I'd also love to see the JL interact with Brainiac because I think his conquest of earth would be much more than his conquest of most other planets. He not only would take Metropolis, but would go after Themyscira, and Atlantis as well. The JL would have to stop him from taking all three of these places AND hord off his onslaught from space.

And to further differentiate JL from other CBM team up movies (and from MOS and BvS) would be to a see a climactic battle against the extra-terrestrial being that isn't trying to destroy his targets. Brainiac is trying to preserve them at all cost. His robotic minions would try their hardest to carry out the mission and counter the Justice League without any collateral damage. We've never seen a fight where the good guy and bad guy are both trying not to damage the battlefield. It also would save a lot of money. There's already been so much destruction in this universe.

Right on, awesome stuff man.

I loved Batman v Superman, I can understand (some of) the complaints, especially editing and pacing.... but as a DC comics fan, and comics fan in general, I thought it was amazing with absolutely amazing performances all around. I'm so hyped for the rest of the DCEU, and I cannot wait for Suicide Squad. Seeing the Scott Snyder/Greg Capullo influence in the latest Suicide Squad trailer blew my [frick]ing mind.

As far as Supes, I feel like Snyder has set him up perfectly for something big.... One of the things for me about Superman is the more powerful you make Supes, the less interesting he is, on the big screen and in the comics too, the more powerful you make Superman, the less sense it makes to have a real need for the Justice League. So, I like where their taking the story.... and how their forming the Justice League post Superman's death....

I have no idea where Supes will fit in though, maybe they'll go the Injustice route....

I feel like time travel/the speed force is going to play a big role moving forward and I cannot wait for that.... so much potential

But yeah, it's time for Supes and the public to be on the same page, Supes needs to be appreciated again. And, I would love to see Snyder film a massive sequence of Supes saving people, straight from the grave. Supes busting through through his coffin, and saving the day, in an epic sequence. That would be the biggest payoff ever on screen after all of the character development in MOS and BvS.
