Smallville: Michael Rosenbaum Adds a Bit More About the Finale

While talking to him about his new Fox series Breaking In, which debuts April 6th (and on which the actor is going to pay a bit of a tribute to Smallville by donning a Superman shirt and black glasses), Zap2It asked Michael Rosenbaum for a few more details regarding his appearance in Smallville's series finale.

In some ways, Rosenbaum hasn't been able to get a break. Initially he was vilified for apparently refusing to appear in the finale, and now he's taking a lot of hits for having only spent one day on the set filming, suggesting Lex won't have much of a presence.

"We did a lot," he tells Zap2It. "I know people thought, 'Oh, he only went up for one day.' We did 19 hours. Okay, for anyone out there who is like, 'Oh, he only went out there for one day,' I was up there for 19 hours. We did four different things. Two nice scenes and then two other specialty things that I won't tell you about. I'm a part of the finale and I think it's important."

In terms of the impact Smallville had on his life, Rosenbaum adds, "It's a part of life, a part of my life that I'll always remember and that I'll look fondly on. What can I say? Great times. It's nice that it's finally ending, to end that chapter in your life."

Great Stuff Ed! I'm just glad he decided to return for the finale, and if he's only in 4 scenes (if i read the article right) i guess that means he wont be possessed by Darkseid like some people thought, so we might get an awesome Superman vs Darkseid fight as well as Superman and Lex!

I tried watching the show it felt kind of boring IMO. I hope the finale ends up being good.

I wonder if CW are thinking of making a spin-off? I mean it's not like there aren't enough interesting characters, Green Arrow, Supergirl, Zatanna... they could do a Justice Society spin off/prequel, or a Justice League type show which focusses on different heroes at different times (Superman/ Clark could cameo from time to time)... they could even do a full blown Superman show, but I get the feeling Tom Welling isn't too keen on wearing the suit for long.

@ACira. That's OK, Routh isn't doing anything...

EdGross - 3/9/2011, 3:08 AM
There has been zero talk about a spin-off lately. Obviously a Superman show wouldn't even be a possibility given Zack Snyder's forthcoming movie. "Scion" definitely felt like they were setting up a potential spin-off with Lucas Grabeel as Conner Kent, but that isn't likely either.

@Ed. That's like saying Smallville season 5 onwards wasn't possible because of SR. There'll be demand for a Superman TV series, Welling won't do it (though he would produce) and Routh will be looking for work. Am I the only one who sees this coming?

With all due respect, there is simply no way that Warners is going to greenlight a Superman TV show when they are about to relaunch the movie franchise. It's the same reason you won't see a Batman TV series at the same time the movies are happening. From a business point a view, investing hundreds of millions of dollars in putting these characters on the big screen to then offer them to the audience on TV for free just doesn't make sense.

And as to Smallville vs. Superman Returns: the former is about Clark Kent becoming Superman, while the latter is the Man of Steel himself. There's a clear distinction between the two.

If MOS does well you can bet there'll be an animated series like Batman'89/TAS and BB/The Batman. Along with demand from Smallville fans and the need to make money back from the legal case (which might even order it like they ordered MOS) I can see a live action Superman TV series happening. Your reasoning against this is quite valid but there is a lot of strangeness over this, Superman himself is underutilised and let's face it not exactly well managed right now.

ShadowVoyd, I couldn't agree with you more: some of the attempts prior to Superman Returns would have likely destroyed the character's cinematic viability for decades to come. I think Superman Returns -- whether you like or hate it -- has paved the way for a proper Superman film in the same way that Star Trek: The Motion Picture paved the way for The Wrath of Khan.

whatever happened to the touted metropolis show that was talked about at comic con a couple of years ago!? if im not mistaken they had a poster up for it!

ShadowVoyd, It's the settlement I'm thinking of. If remember correctly it was lack of payment over Smallville that led to the court case in the first place. The heirs may well look at the Smallville fans and negotiate another stipulation. These aren't businesspeople. At least not on this level.

BTW, I just got used to saying "ordered" after trying to explain what really happened (which I don't fully understand anyway) once too often.

They wont let it happen, SMALLVILLE couldn't be taken of air, without finishing, and it was started before WB started thinking about RETURNS. Look at Batman, in SMALLVILLE. He was set to be an addition to cast in season 3, but due to the plans for a movie, a whole arc of smallville had to be scrapped - yet season 3 was still terrific :P

I can't wait! Heck, I grew up with these guys over the last 10 years! I was 23 when the show started.

Hate all you want but...

Tom Welling is an amazing Clark - though I agree he should have become Superman already.
Erica Durance is the best Lois to date. Nobody else compares.
I never liked Green Arrow in the comics, but I've really liked him in the show.

I'll support this show to its end. And I hope we'll see more from this cast- tv movies, etc.

@EdGross - you are right. The TV series does conflict with the film franchise. Snyder and co. obviously have the film rights to the character and more than likely do not want any TV series to detract from their film and hence they they might be exercising that right at this time.

And this is the icing on the cake for a job well done for Rosenbaum. He was great on the show and best of luck on all his future endeavors. Big time psyched for the Smallville finale!

Thanks, Ben. I've been an entertainment journalist for many years, so I've definitely had some experience. I started off in writer and then editorial positions on my college papers as well -- best of luck. I hope you have a passion for it; I try and keep the attitude that every day is like the first day, so the excitement level never diminishes.

@Supersaiyanfan: we all miss the good all days, my man....

i for one was looking forward to this show's version of Superman, the first two seasons were like pure and fresh take on the mythology with loads to look forward to and that excitement of knowing that the boy on screen was gonna turn out to be Superman.... but as the seasons went it just became stale and overstretched and often boring. i love the show and how it turned out.... but it could have turned out much better, given the freshness that it initially had..... i don't think they will continue the show, everybody who's involved in it would rather like to move on in my opinion....

The actress who play Supergirl and Zatanna have there own shows now.

With the debut of Wonder Woman a Justice League TV Show is out. Unless they can connected Smallville and Wonder Woman but I don't think they will.

The people in charge of Smallville will be going to Vampire Diaries also and if they were doing a spin off we would have heard about it by now.

When is Tom Welling's next show? Wihdrawal is already starting. Why doesn't WB have a cameo for Mr. Welling on Superman?

@ShadowVoyd- Singer receives crap for what he did to Superman because he basically RAPED Superman on the big screen. I don't care about how much 'crappier' the former attempts would have been, I don't care about "what could have been" I only care about 'what actually HAPPENED" and what happened was that Singer killed Superman for the last 4 years with his dipshit film. If someone doesn't deserve any sympathy, it is 'BrIan Stinker'.

@LP4...Couldn't agree with you more. Stinker turned Superman into a stalker, a peeping tom, and a deadbeat dad. Bryan Stinker should be drawn and quartered, drummed out of cinema forever, and never be allowed anywhere near a CBM again.

@Knightstalker- Thanks buddy ;D these people just never seem to get it =(

You're one of the few here who...no offense to others...but you're one of the few fans on here who actually seems to want a good Superman film. Not to downplay the Stinker fans and Routh fans but we already saw back in 2006 just how deadly and vile a pill that a 'Stinkerman Returns' film can be.

@knightstalker - I do agree thst Superman Returns needed to give devoted fans a refund for what they did to the character in that movie. i'm not so sure Zack Snyder is the answer. If you are only as good as you last movie, Sucker Punch looks awful in the promos.

Taco Bell, really, the man is from New York.
