Superman won't be as Successful without Tom Welling!

Tom Welling Must be our generation's Superman!

Here's why I say. A lot of people were saying that Brandon Routh deserves another shot at Superman. Yet there's also a huge majority of you saying to just start off fresh and reboot the whole thing. Everyone makes great arguments on why they feel the way they do. Here's how I feel I don't want to see Brandon Routh as Superman anymore, but I also don't want a reboot. I simply want a continuation of "Smallville."

I've been watching "Smallville" since its debut in 2001. In my eyes he is Superman. For nine years now I've been watching "Smallville: Superman's origin". The show portrays how he discovered his powers and how he learned to control them. We've seen how he and Lex Luthor became enemies. We've seen cameos from other heroes such as Green Arrow, Aquaman, Flash, and the Justice Society. We've seen the birth of his future enemies such as Doomsday, Metallo, and General Zod. We've also seen how the relationship between Clark and Lois is blossoming and getting closer. Now it's in its tenth season, and he now knows his destiny. I believe his destiny will be realized in the tenth and final season. I believe he will rip his shirt open to reveal the legendary red and yellow shield and that's when every "Smallville" fan including me will have a smile as big as a coat hanger on our faces. It's what we've been waiting for since the 1st episode. But what would really top it off, would be to see the trailer for the "Man of Steel" starring Tom Welling immediately after the last episode. He's been Clark Kent for ten years now and why would he turn down a huge pay day to play a character he's been portraying for a decade now. As much as we're anticipating his dawning the legendary red and blue. Superman, "Smallville," and Tom Welling fans would go nuts to see him in a Superman movie. I honestly feel like "The Man of Steel" can shatter box office records, but only if Tom Welling is at the helm.

Agree, but I think Routh deserves a second chance.

From my understanding Tom Welling doesn't have the acting chops to hold a major movie. Also, I doubt he would decline a Superman movie I don't think their would be an issue there. The issue is, and this is just my observation the only people that want Tom as the next Supes are Smallville fans, and really only Smallville fans would get excited. For people like me and others who are not very familiar with Tom could give a rat's ass about his name drop as the next Superman. Just that in itself I doubt would make much of an impact on the film's success.

Maybe you all prefer to see Shia Laboof as Superman.
If you have options always pick one of the lesser evils.

as much as i cannot wait to see Tom don the red and blue at the end of Smallville, i do not believe that Tom Welling can hold up a major blockbuster film.
the same was said about Orlando Bloom in Kingdom of Heaven.
and it still holds today.
good film though, i highly reccomend it.
anyway, i would rather see Brandon Routh return as Superman because he was the shining moment in the overall terrible film, Superman Returns.

I watched the season finale last week and here's my conclusion: Tom Welling can't act. Period. I've seen him in Smallville and in films like The Fog. He sucks. I don't want him anywhere near a big screen version of Superman. His "skills" work just fine for a tv show like Smallville, but that's it.

Routh I think gets a bad wrap because of what he was told to do. Singer's film was essentially a follow up to Donner's films and so he was told by Singer to act like Christopher Reeve. I'd like to see what he can do with a different script and see him act like Routh as Superman.

Can people, actually see another Brandon Routh Supes movie without being distracted by there not being a son....? I dont know. He did get a bad rap from the film..... But i think if its a Chris Nolan godfathered reboot then it needs a new actor. I could deal with it, but i love movies in general. Its hard for your average person to really be captavated, and dive into the movie they are watching at that given time without being distracted by precedent, or cell phones, or their date, or what have you.

I agree that Welling is not the greatest actor but I still think he is the best choice for the next film. Seriously, who else is there? Routh is out so it can't be him. And to be honest, Superman doesn't have to be that great of an actor. He just has to look tough and act noble, and Welling can do that.

While there are several actors that come close such as Henry Cavil or Matt Bomer I just wouldn't be happy with their build or height, no matter how great they can act.

I've mentioned this before and I'll say it again - Whoever they choose to portray Superman must have a strong physical presence. He should be more imposing that Ryan Reynolds because there is no way that Green Lantern is bigger than Superman. And I don't want them to use cheap camera angles so that he appears bigger because we will all know the truth.

I think a good idea would be for Warner Bros to test the waters with Welling and have him make a cameo in the Green Lantern movie, since the script was originally written that way. If Welling doesn't deliver or it doesn't work out, well then no harm done, and they can just cast someone else for the Superman and Justice League movies.

Find me another actor that has the traditional Superman look/build and is atleast 6'2 and I may change my mind. But until then, I'm sticking with Welling.

I want Weilling as Supes, but the thing about that is that that means that the movie would appear to be tied down by Smallville continuity... which simply wouldnt work. Same thing with Routh, (and I really want him back) the movie would be tied down by Superman Returns. A reboot is sadly need IMO.

I agree with Omega.
1. "Smallville"'s continuity would get in the way of the movie updating and reinventing some great adversaries. Doomsday was the worst. Zod is pretty ridiculous. Bizarro was second only to Doomsday. And there are too many super-powered people running around in that story.

2. All that I've read is that Tom Welling isn't interested in being Superman. "They" claim he enjoys exploring Clark Kent.
And since he's peaked out in that arena...time for fresh blood. What about a young (early 20's) Superman understanding his powers, but learning to use them together and to their fullest. Add to that villains that aren't Lex Luthor or every other shmo possessing Kryptonite.

Rock317 - 5/20/2010, 9:13 PM
I agree with you blackout 100%! :) Even when Mr. Reeves was alive (God rest his sole) he said that Tom would be the best overall choice! P.S - Brandon Routh is wayyyy OVERrated.

The only problem I have with welling is that people would then attribute all the smallville canon with superman canon. And there's no way after 9 seasons that major changes havent been made to the superman continuity, it wouldn't work.
Like what omega said basically...

I dont understand how people see Tom Welling as Superman. I cannot see him as Superman, and I've seen every Smallville episode. Brandon Routh DESERVES a second chance. He LOOKS like THE SUPERMAN of ALL TIME - Christoper Reeves, yet different enough to make it his own. Brandon Routh deserves a second chance, and Im going to be really sad if its not going to happen, which I know wont happen, sadly. Zoey Dechanel as Lois Lane would however be a step in the right direction(!) BRANDON ROUTH IS KAL EL!!!!

flames809 - 5/22/2010, 8:22 AM
angelus- routh only looks like superman because he had the suit on and he sucked as superman and clark kent even if the scripit wasent good he aleast could of tryed harter to actually make a good superman. and tom welling he been learning from every single mistake how to play a good superman and he know superman back story already and he pplays a good clark kent and a good superman showen in season 9 and he was the first asked by singer to play superman but he sayed no because he was still doing the show well so this leave routh the second one to be asked to play superman
TheDurkinKnight
TheDurkinKnight - 5/22/2010, 9:55 AM
I'd love to see Tom Welling don the suit on the one hand, because SMALLVILLE is what made me first appreciate the character of Superman. More so in the earlier seasons as you see this superhuman adolescent that can defy the laws of physics-forced to always make sacrafices and maintain control, despite being the underdog. IMO Tom Welling IS this generation's Superman, I agree, but on the other hand, the show has taken so many creative liberties with characters and stories that it would be hard to make a proper Superman movie with it now.

Your article was great by the way, we-worded man!

BTW I have NO IDEA why people are so gaga over Routhe's performance in that ridiculous waste of celluloid. He was barely in it, and when he WAS, he was usually moping or brooding, or wrecking a marriage or neglecting his kid...all without really uttering much dialogue. You could have given a 2x4 a spit curl and it would have had more charisma!

All I wanna say is (and I havent watched smallville), with the undeniable success of the actor/current character in smallville , and hoping the movie will kickass to the highest degree, to me it is the best idea to join the stories and send Tom Welling to the big screen. To see a continuation of a huge series is a major dream for any fan of that particular series; additionally, if the movie rocks, it would also provide the opportunity of a prequel for the ones that enjoyed the movie and have never watched the series!!
After so many years portraying the man of steel, the guy cant do a bad job. It's great for both the film-makers and the producers of smallville.

Im not a fan of the series (yet) not because I dont like it, I am sure I would love it, as anyone that likes superman, I just havent had time to see it. I will, Im sure, regardless if Welling becomes the holywood's newest Superman or not.

Just 2cs from a non-Smallville fan

hey people were down at the fact that christian bale was picked as BATMAN. they were all over him saying how they couldnt see him as THE DARK KNIGHT. and now those people are soiling themselves, the only thing they are talking about are how deep of voice he uses as BATMAN. u can never replace christopher reeves and u damn sure cant replace marlon brando in any of his movies. we dont need another reeves, we need that true SUPERMAN and that TRUE SUPERMAN story. thats what fans love. thats why will never get another T2 type of TERMINATOR without james cameron's story or guidance. can anybody picture SUPERMAN RETURNS without brandon routh acting like christopher reeves? he came from a soap opera for crying out loud. how the hell can u down on tom welling from playing clark kent through his teenage years to early adult hood on a tv show. why wouldnt u want someone who is already in the source material. yeah routh would get the short end of the stick, but its hollywood when your attached to a subpar movie. another question hell who is to blame for DAREDEVIL. i blame the director more than ben affleck but i think michael c. hall would be better as DD just because they need somethin fresh and hes a great actor. everybody blamed affleck for the movie. the director, mark steven johnson i believe, destroyed two great comics back to back (DAREDEVIL & GHOST RIDER). why even give him a chance to destroy another one i dunno. but the nolans are gonna stay away from past mistakes just like they did with BATMAN so expect those attached to SUPERMAN RETURNS to not return. IF brandon routh did steal the show like chris evans did for FANTASTIC FOUR, hes the only one that would be the first in line to return for fox in the reboot and possibly michael chiklis in second, then i can see a legitimate push for him. BUT BRYAN SINGER DEFINANTLY NEEDS A KICK IN THE NUTS. U LEAVE THE XMEN IN THE HANDS OF BRETT RATNER!!??

ok first off i was all for tom 4 years ago but after season 3 it just got dragged out to long plus he has said numerous times he doesn't want to wear the tights. now to routh he still looks young he has new experience he has had more time to study the character and he brings life to clark. so that is my opinion so go back to watching smallville
Marvelous1
Marvelous1 - 5/23/2010, 4:58 PM
who wants to wear tights. christian bale didnt want to wear batman's cowl cuz he thought he looked stupid with black makeup over his eyes and now look at him. if he really didnt want to wear tights then why the hell would u take a role about clark kent turning into superman. not many actors like prostetics or extreme makeup on their faces, but they get over it. yes i will go and watch smallville, im interesting in seeing whats going to happen in this 10th and final season. theyre thinking about bringing lex back and clark finally flying. oh and he has changed his mind about the suit cuz they will do whatever the fans want for the final season. and superman isnt young either hes damn near 30 when he wears the suit so he has to look like a man. routh and welling are around the same age, about a two year difference i believe.

There is so much talk about wearing tights. Following current trends, what about armor-kind of suit? Not to stir away from the famous cape and tights, but you know, with all the special effects going on for Green Lantern, Thor, Batman and Captain American Im sure (needless to say Iron Man), I wouldnt be surprised if Smallville (or even the remake of superman) goes that way. That would be kind of a twist, granted it would not follow the comic-typical suit, but an armor-like of similar color/style sounds like a fun twist to it, if done properly. Something that could be even integrated with his body. Anyone agree?? Total BS? Would anyone that is good about this stuff, try to put that together on a picture for us? That would be awesome!!!

steelrocks - 5/23/2010, 11:13 PM
Can you imagine in 30 years superman wearing those damn silly tights? I cant. Do you think that with all the superheroes getting pimped up costumes/armors/CGI stuff, superman's attire will with remain untouched?!! I think its unlikely.

Check out this link and tell me this costume doesnt kickass to the highest degree!!!

Right, bring back Routh!
it was not his fualt the movie did not do very well. He was very good, and Singer nailed it, with casting him.
If not, give the role to Jim Caviezel ( i thing that's how you spell his surname). Best person so far in acting and looks.
And for the villans, keep that idiot Luthor out, it's done so many times. If they have to get old enemies, then why not the evil trio, Zod, Non and Ursa. As a major villan i thing they should think big scale. Like Doomsday, Darkseid, Jax-Ur or Eradicator.

Oh, and one more thing, atleast let him punch some one this time. Anyone, even Jimmy!

They should keep Brandon Routh,it really shouldn't be an issue after all during batman Forever and Batman and robin...other than the fact that different persons portrayed batman in each of those movies, all the other actors from batman and batman returns were the same. besides it wasn't Brandon that killed the movie or even Singers directing...in the end it was that to much money was spent in making the film.

I seriously doubt they keep BR. It may not be TW, but Nolan wouldnt keep the same actor from a unsuccessful superman movie in general
