THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN Spoiler-Free Review; "A Fun, Action-Packed Addition To The DC Animated Universe"

With Death of Superman now available on DVD and Blu-ray, we're reviewing the latest DC Animated movie to let you know whether it's worth checking out the first half of this epic two-part adventure...

While Marvel Studios may be way ahead of DC Entertainment when it comes to big screen, live-action offerings, they still have a long way to go until matching Warner Bros.' Animation's DC Comics slate. The latest release is the first part of an epic two-part take on The Death of Superman, a story which any comic book fan worth their salt will be all too familiar with. However, while the core story of the Man of Steel falling in battle against Doomsday remains the same, there are enough interesting new wrinkles here to make this worth seeking out, especially as it continues the tradition of expanding this shared DC Universe, bringing in a number of familiar faces and touching on their respective stories in some very interesting and exciting ways.

Running parallel with the main story is a subplot about Clark Kent struggling to decide whether or not to tell Lois Lane that he's Superman as their relationship continues going from strength to strength, while we also get some very intriguing (and menacing) scenes with Lex Luthor. Thanks to a brilliant performance from The Office's Rainn Wilson, this movie establishes him as a big bad in the DC Universe who is not only delightfully evil but also someone who will seemingly continue to play a large role in proceedings moving forward, potentially as a foe for the entire Justice League.

It's no great surprise that The Death of Superman is so good, especially with Sam Liu back at the helm of another DC animated adventure and comic book writer Peter J. Tomasi on scripting duties. While much of the movie is an extended action sequence, enough is done to ensure that there's more to it than just the fight scenes and even if you've never watched one of these before, you'll be invested in every major character by the time the credits roll - make sure to sit through all of those, by the way - and almost certainly rooting for Superman as he fights Doomsday in what is ultimately a losing effort (that's hardly a spoiler given the title). I'm a fan of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice but if Zack Snyder really wanted to
adapt this iconic comic book story in that movie, he should have done it this way because The Death of Superman feels like the adventure that release should have been.

With a strong voice cast and the sort of stylish animation style we've come to expect from these movies, this is definitely a winner and I can't wait for the next instalment because even if we think we know where the story will go next, I'm confident that DC Animation will deliver plenty of surprises, something which is evident from the very cool special feature included on the disc looking forward to what we should expect from Reign of the Supermen

A fun, action-packed addition to the DC Animated Universe, this is a must-see for fans of the Man of Steel and it's fair to say that the sequel can't get here soon enough if it's as good as this one.

The best thing this New 52 universe has put out. Really good flick.

@BlackBeltJones - You bring up something i did want to mention. This film was good but there was no need for it to be a universe. The only connections were stones father relationship and damien wayne, which they mention every 5 seconds. Nobody gives a damn about the constant updates on Damien's life.

You wanna really make use of it? have mongul appear in the return of superman movie and then the emerald twilight storyline of hal going mad. Full nathion fillion.

Otherwise it just feels...limiting. That's just my opinion.

Loved it, thanks Tomasi tho.
Hopefully he'll write the next chapter as well (Reign of Superman).
This guy just gets the DCU, but especially Superman.

Was great film though. Except for that funeral.

@TheBillCipher - The moments after Supes' death are really weird tbh. Something about the funeral felt weird. I guess it was Lex's speech. I did like that Batman wasn't there because he was pissed about it. And I don't think we got to see enough of the Kent's reactions.

@BlindWedjat - "Superman is dead and that's a shame...... Now lets talk about the heroic sacrifices of lex luthor and let him do the speech on his mortal enemy" The mayor sucked.

But yes. Over all doomsday did that part better. It showed how people felt after supermans death. They may show more in reign though.

My advice is to do the funeral again, have more heroes. Like i said, if it wasnt a universe, they could have stuck in WAAAy more than the justice league.

One of the better recent DC animated film.

The animation was really not great, but it was a good film that had really strong emotional moments (especially the end of course). The part that really got to me was when that boy Superman saved on the bridge went back to hug him. The fight between Supes and Doomsday was well done too (although it seems Superman did take too long to get there).

Honestly, this movie actually pissed me off. Not because I hated it, but because when I was watching it, there's a shit ton of stuff this Superman does in this film that needed to be done in both MoS and BvS, and it just shows how much those film squandered this story.

There's more than one time this film is written and directed in a way that it shows Superman actively behaving like he does give a shit about the people around him in the midst of the battle. More than once does he stop fighting in an effort to actually save someone, not passively by beating or killing the bad guy. And it works every time it happens in this film. Every time it got an emotional response out of me, so it's not like it can't be done because it doesn't feel nonsensical either. It grounds the film in a reality or sorts, like it's really happening and people are being affected, and not just a video game boss fight.

I also really liked the JL fighting and loosing to Doomsday one at a time. That's one thing that doesn't really happen in BvS. In that film's final fight it certainly feels like Wonder Woman is doing just as good as a job as Superman with Doomsday (so it makes you wonder why she wasn't given the spear in the first place). But when Wondy can no longer fight Doomsday in this film, it's a moment. It's important. And Superman's refusal to kill Doomsday immediately is compelling stuff. In BvS, Superman kills Doomsday without hesitation. Of course, he has to kill Doomsday, but when it does happen, it doesn't feel like the last call. It's just something that happens. The fight takes place in an abandoned area (because Zack Snyder didn't understand the criticism of the MoS final battle), so it even if it's plausible Doomsday would have been a danger to civilians, we don't get to see anyone react to him, except for those military guys, the heroes, and Lois Lane.

That being said, I enjoyed this. Looking forward to the sequel quite greatly. I do hope the animation is better this time around

@BlindWedjat - This movie basically showed you why superman was so good. He does not just save people, he cares for people. He is friends with everyone from the little boy to the sailor man. That and he even tries to somewhat reason with doomsday at first, if on a very subtle level.

I really want a superman reboot with a more tight cast, just set in metropolis and with a friendlier superman. Maybe even cut the whole "is he a god"

Also doomsday himself was much better. He was not just a monster. He was a slasher villain. He was silent in his kills, somewhat psychotically curious and got angry when he needed to. That and he planned his moves out. He was not a monster but a killer.

Love this all in live action, but the ship has sailed. For now.....

I liked this animated movie better than BvS Dawn of Justice. Don’t get why WBDC can make decent animations but their live action films end up meh. Just have the guys writing the animations write the live action screenplay.

I'm so behind on the DC animated films. Still need to see Gotham by Gaslight, Hell to Pay, Batman Ninja, and this.

However between Death of Superman, Superman: Doomsday, Batman v. Superman, and All-Star Superman, I don't know how many more times I can watch this guy die.

The only reason I didn't run out and buy this immediately is the character design. The original look from the Superman Animated tv show would have worked much better.

I enjoyed it. I thought for a minute it would be more true to the comic and super violent, especially how it started once Doomsday was found. But that tamed out a bit. In the comic, some of the lesser Justice Laugue members get PULPED.

I still think Justice League War is my favorite of the last few years.

Didn't care for it. To me, this was a prefect example of how them trying to force a classic story into their new 52 universe caused the movie to suffer. A huge part of what makes the Death of Superman emotional is that Lois was in a long lasting and deep relationship with Superman. When he dies, Lois is losing her soulmate. In this movie, they had to build their relationship from scratch. Lois barely knows anything about Superman or Clark. There was such a huge disconnect between the two that when she cries by his side, I felt nothing. They didn't even reach first base. Instead of giving her one final kiss goodbye, he just gives her a damn note.

I didn't like how Superman didn't help the JL fight doomsday like in the comics. He just shows up after everyone got their asses handed to them. Seeing such little interaction between Superman and the League makes their mourning of him feel artificial. And they didn't even carry his damn casket! I also thought Doomsday was way more scary/intimidating in Superman: Doomsday and Lex in this movie was borderline Jesse Eisenberg, terrible.

These two are still the best death's of Superman:
