SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Shares How Christopher Reeve's SUPERMAN Has Inspired Him

There's a huge amount of excitement for Superman: Legacy, and fans are understandably keen to see what writer and director James Gunn does with the Man of Tomorrow in the new DCU.

He clearly has very different plans for the character than what we saw from Zack Snyder in 2013's Man of Steel, and if recent reports are to be believed, the filmmaker is close to casting his Clark Kent. We're excited to see who lands the role, and for those of you who are fans of 1978's Superman: The Movie, Gunn now confirms it's a major inspiration.

"The thing they don't talk about much when they talk about Christopher Reeve, they talk about his pureness, his hope, his goodness," he shared in a recent interview with GQ. "They talk about, you know, the way that he plays Clark as being so different from the way he plays Superman, and how he can turn that on in an instant."

"But there's this playfulness about Superman, when he's saving a cat, he's got that wry smile. And that is one of the best parts of the movie is the playfulness of Superman. He enjoys what he's doing. He likes helping human beings and he likes saving them."

Interestingly, Gunn also praised the simple design of Reeve's Superman costume saying that it, "works really good and it's just without frills."

We can't help but wonder whether that's an indication the DCU design will simplify the suit; while the version worn by Henry Cavill was classic Superman in a lot of ways, it was also overly busy and covered in Kryptonian writing upon closer inspection.

Gunn added, "How do you make it look believable? How do you take this outrageous concept of a guy who flies around and turn him into something real? I think that, you know, what we're doing is different. It's its own thing. But I'm definitely influenced by what [director Richard] Donner did with Superman, and what Christopher Reeve did with Superman, and Margot Kidder, who's fantastic in the movie. She's really the heart of it in a lot of ways."

This is going to be music to the ears of many DC Comics fans, and it sounds like the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director has a fantastic handle on what makes this character so great. Based on Gunn's past work, though, we definitely don't anticipate getting a retread similar to what Bryan Singer delivered with Superman Returns

Superman: Legacy is set to be released in theaters on July 11. 2025.

I trust James Gunn because of his passion even though I am a Snyder fan but change was nessecary. BTW saw Guardians 3 last night my favorite Marvel film since Infinity War.

John Campea is pretty much done now.

"John Campea is pretty much done now."

As Lois Lane would say, "What's the story?"

@tylerzero - Long Story short John is no longer doing his show on YT claiming that he doesn't get as many views on his live show anymore compared to the individual videos so he's moving to podcast form while still doing individual videos well that caused a lot of backlash because he only told his members of the format change and then made one mention of it during his Open Mic so a lot of fans we caught off guard by the format change this Monday which added to how many people still disagreed with him no longer having Rob on the show he's pretty much damaged his channel so he made announcement yesterday saying they are no longer gonna be taping the show at all just podcast with the exception of Open Mics and out of theater reactions because he wants to lessen his would load and spend more time with his wife. Personally I think he just wants to retire already even his reviews are more or less the same now and he doesn't go in depth like his used too. There's definitely more but this is just the gist of it.

Superman 78 still the gold standard among CBMs, 45 years and counting.

Might sound weird, but always thought that "What's so Funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way" would make for a good transition to live-action.
Superman Vs the Elite was a great movie.

@LittleSween - That story feels in so many ways like a direct response/take that at Snyder's take on Superman, yet it came out over a decade before Man of Steel.

Gunn is going back to corney Superman? This studio is NEVER going to learn the lessons of the past. Continuing to listen to they 10 to 15 year old fans is only going to lead to the same failure as Superman Returns.

@Forthas - I think its you who doesnt get it. returns wasnt 78. it a simber boring take. man of steel was a gritty somber, boring take. hes saying that superman is a more psitive character who enjoys being superman. that is 78. and that is what wever been missing

Forthas - 5/17/2023, 9:06 AM
@iceballsreborn - No! I get it perfectly. Man of Steel was a hopeful film. The first half of the Donner film featured Superman on a journey searching for his identity...same as Man of Steel. So I guess you are claiming the second half of Man of Steel was...boring??? Did you watch that film? Man of Steel was FAAAAAARRRR more action packed than the Donner film where Superman chased a missile and spun around the world really fast...riveting!!!!

I think he has the characterisation bang on. By the time Superman is in his mid to late 20s, he has hopefully got past the stages of dealing with his developing powers, acceptance into the world and so on, and somewhat relaxed into his role. And I think that a being who is essentially invulnerable to 99.9% of what can be thrown at him would naturally have a calm demeanour anyway, at least until he encounters something that can hurt him.

The suit bit, I'm not sure. Cavill's suit had a lot of detail for sure, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. The '78 suit looks very simplistic now and I think Cavill's one was really impressive in some areas, certainly passing for the type of garment that would be worn in a futuristic society like Krypton. The detailing (by its nature) was only really visible up close so from a distance I can't see how it detracted anything from the suit. I'm all for brighter colours though.

@elgaz -

I think for this take it would be good if his suit didn’t come from krypton and was made by himself.

Perhaps if he ever does come across kryptonian armor in the future, he can always paint it red and blue and adopt it for his suit since it would be more durable.

Man of Steel would like a word...

I get what Gunn is trying to say and do, I still love the '78 film as well, but this basis of surrounding a concept on something that is passed its twilight only leads to more misconception. The very reasons as to why "Superman Returns" didn't respond well to the modern audiences. I don't want a new Donnerverse. I want a Superman story done right!

@TheLight - This! I am a fan of the 78 Donner film as well, but unfortunately a huge part of the CBM community cannot move past a 45 year old film. It would be like me wanting to continue to travel by horse and buggy because "...that is how we used to do it!" Times change! people and an comic book characters should change with the times. for those that want to go back to the "traditional' Superman red trunks and bright colors and all...then Superman should look like this...

Original Superman

This is the first iteration of Superman ever. How come we are changing it? Go back to how Superman originally looked!

@Forthas - Dude you make zero sense. If I didn't know any better I'd guess your a 17 year old the way you are trying to make a point.

Nobody is arguing they want the Donner version back. What they want is the ideal of Superman back. What he stood for before Snyder shit all over it. Snyder's version was too dark and brooding. That's not Superman. Yes, Man of Steel was a solid movie, but it had it's issues in the characterization of Superman later in the movie and as we moved into BvS and JL. That's what people want to stay away from.

Superman Returns: Depressed stalker Superman spends the final act fighting an island. Oh yeah he’s also fine with being an absentee dad by the end of the film, despite the fact that his biological son is absolutely starting to show the very same abilities he himself has. Which will only cause problems for the poor kid once he realizes the only other person who can sort that stuff out effectively decided to let him go it on his own. Far from the spiritual sequel to the Donner films it was billed as being.

MOS: Depressed Clark Kent spends the whole movie being depressed about, well, everything really. By the time the final act rolls around he’s been mired in his self loathing long enough that he allows himself to actually kill the only other living Kryptonian he knows of. This after it’s explicitly shown that a major contributing factor for him being as EMO as he is, he a because he believes himself to be the last living Kryptonian.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that a hopeful Donner like approach, not one that’s just in the marketing that is, is exactly what’s needed from a Superman movie at this point. So if Gunn is taking that approach then, thankfully somebody gets it.

The full video was worth a watch. Gunn ranked his top 5 comic adaptations, and had some interesting things to say. Plus a cool and eclectic list.

Yeah! Let's go back to shiny spandex...

Then Superman could introduce a new superpower...he would stop villains by making then laugh to death!
