Superman Suit Origin

Superman Suit Origin

With the latest retelling of Superman's story, I offer my thoughts on what the origin of his new alien-looking suit should be.

Man of Steel pics appear online almost daily and rants about the "Super-panties" posted more often than that, I want to start off by stating the following:

This editorial is not another rant about why Superman's suit should be one way or the other.

I am a lifelong Superman fanatic and collector. I have always loved the classic, iconic look of our boy in blue but am EXTREMELY glad to see DC/WB welcome him into the 21st century with a fresh new look. I think rebooting and retelling the exact same story and design with better SFX lacks creativity, originality and loses touch with the times. But that is a completely different topic.

With the latest "new 52" and the Man of Steel reboot, we are witnessing a shift in Superman's origin in an attempt to bring him closer to reality. This is no easy task, but by removing the red briefs and yellow belt in MoS and adding different textures to Superman's suit, they have managed to make him look a lot more alien. I think this is fantastic, but how will they explain where he got it from? Did his mom really sew it for him? Did he draw it in a notebook a la Tobey Maguire?

In my opinion, the best origin would be a Kryptonian bio-suit made from some organic bio-technology, something that every Kryptonian receives on Krypton. His suit should be one of the things that Jor-El sends with Kal-El on his spacecraft. Not already tailored, but in the form of a crystal, capsule or whatever. A suit that creates itself on Kal-El by analyzing his Kryptonian DNA. It would meld itself kind of how the symbiote attaches to Spiderman, but once it is created it is done. No more melding or transformations like symbiote Spidey. He would have his suit, ready for battle. This would be a great way to explain a few things:

  1. The lineage within the family having their shield on his chest.

  2. The textures and imperfect lines running down his torso and legs.

  3. The reason why the suit does not tear in battle, in fires, or at high speeds. The suit would maintain invincibile under a yellow sun because it is derived from Superman's DNA.

  4. The style/design. Nobody would be held responsible for the design. Not Clark, Martha or anyone else. No more, "why would you make your costume this way?"

  5. The tailoring, fit to the body and exposing every freakin' muscle fiber.

  6. It could also lead to a different looking suit in the future. Should his suit somehow be destroyed in battle, he could create another one and the change in detail could relate to the changes in his life.

  7. Red and blue color. The suit would meld with the man, reading his DNA and personal attributes. A man raised in mid-America Kansas screams red, white and blue. He's already white. :)

However, there is one thing the suit should not create on it's own. Something that not all Kryptonians wear. The red cape. And THAT, my friends, should be the one thing his mother makes for him. Martha would make a cape for her son to show his grandeur and make him a greater symbol. And to make him look a bit more cool when he flies.

These are my thoughts on how his suit's origin should be retold. Critics and friends, do your thing in the comments section. All I ask is if you care to rip my thoughts, provide your own take for comparison.

@yossarian - the S has been linked to represent the house of El in some of the story lines.

@yossarian regarding 3 and 6, Superman is described as invincible, but he managed to be killed by Doomsday. Direct conflict.

7, i did not write a book on physics on Krypton. perhaps it can read DNA, thoughts, emotion...you know, personal characteristics.

1, thanks Luke.

2, one word: fingerprints. the most imperfect lines determined by DNA.

4, the technology is responsible, relieving blame of any critique to any of the aforementioned characters.

and lastly, the how does not need to be based on true laws of physics. Superman can fly. what else do you need to know?

@ yossarian

nobody likes people who do what you do. drellik wasnt trying to sound like he's a professor, he was simply thinking out loud about what he would like to see happend and what makes sense to him. you take one look at it and talk down to him as if youre the authority on ideas. get the hell outa here w those lame ass comments.

@ drellik

i like the ideas alot man. it always bugged me that the movies never realy explained the suit or where it came from or how he got it. Superman The Movie did kind of a cop out version by having him just appear in it in the fortress.

But i like the idea about the DNA and it being designed specifically for him. From all the pictures we've seen, it looks like the suit was literally molded around his body.

Good work!

i don't mind the critics. but if the critique sucks, be ready for my rebuttal.

thanks for compliments. i must say, i think this would kick ass. and i agree with you, Superman8, they usually cop out with this major detail.

Your analysis is well considered and extremely logical. Which is why they probably won't use it. And after the recent entirely unreasonable reaction to the depiction of another alien suit made of completely of light energy by an intelligent light energy source with similar capabilities to the one you describe, which to me was a great concept well executed, I fear that too many will shed bitter tears for the missing red panties, no matter how much sense the new suit and its origins are.

Good luck with all that, Kal-El.

I like that idea of it being alien. Because Martha Kent wouldn't make a shitbag suit like that

perhaps Martha can knit up something nice.

It's alien, the design is part of his culture. And I think Zod will explain why he needs to represent.

I hope there would a scene in the reboot on how did superman came up with his costume like an interview with Lois lane. Something like that.

My favorite reason for the suit came from the Lois & Clark TV show. When Lex asked Superman in public, "Where did you get that ridiculous outfit?" Superman glares at him, gets up in his business, and says, "My mom made it!"

Loved that little scene. Superman always dared Lex to do something about it.

WOW. Could NOT agree more!! Well said drellik, VERY well said. I can totally appreciate and respect your loyalty to the character as well as your understanding of the need to change w/the times, but only change so much. Those ideas are perfect, exactly along the same lines i was thinking. I think a lot of us fans would feel the same way about it.
WesMantooth

I like all of that. The idea of Ma Kent making the cape still ties into the previous versions of the story, but also incorporates the Kryptonian origin.

It also means we can finally move away from the "he wears the suit under his civilian clothes all the time" version of things. I mean - really? That never made sense to me. Ok, maybe a dress shirt and pants hide the suit - but what about the cape? Or the boots?
BigDaddyCal
BigDaddyCal - 9/2/2011, 9:08 AM
@drellik I like you ideas, they make more sense than his mom making them. Plus i never liked the wear the suit under his clothes all the time just like WesMantooth said.

I love the idea. When I read the symbiotic thing I was a little worried for a second but then u said it doesn't melt anymore. Overall a great idea and u helped me voice some of the things I've felt about this new suit from the beginning
