I would like to preface this article by saying that in no way do I think these are bad villains, I just don't think there's a worthwhile way to make them work on film. DC is taking their universe in a more serious direction than other studios so it seems logical that they use serious villains.
The following villains are one's I consider either too complicated, innately silly, or too familiar to use.
Villains to Avoid
Mister Mxyzptlk
But I have yet to begin to shenanigan! And I shall shenanigan again and again!
Real name: Unpronounceable
Why they should avoid him: Mxy is an Imp from the 5th dimension. Sound silly? That's because it is. I love the character but he's just too goofy to carry an entire movie. Mxy works well in a serialized format but a 2 and a half hour production is another story. His powers would allow the writers to go anywhere they wanted but that might be a problem. Remember the giant race track from Green Lantern?
How he could work: A cameo appearance would be nice. Maybe have Mxy pop up in the background of a scene. Have it happen so subtly that only those with keen eyes will notice.
Toyman
We can play this two ways. I can kill you right now and restore dignity to the Toyman name -- or you and I can team up -- combine forces -- to become the greatest crime-duo the world has ever known. What do you want to be, punk? A corpse or a partner?
Real name: Winslow Schott
Why they should avoid him: This guy is the definition of gimmicky. He basically devises weapons and traps disguised as toys. Audiences just wouldn't take it seriously. Why should a guy who makes wind up toy bombs be a threat to Superman?
How he could work: A small cameo similar to Calendar Man's appearance in Batman: Arkham City. Clark sees Winslow in prison.
Intergang
And so you are, the king of fools.
Members: Bruno Mannheim, Morgan Edge, Darkseid
Why they should avoid them: This one pains me to say because Intergang is really cool. A criminal organization headquartered in Metropolis armed with Apokoliptian weaponry and technology. The problem is that after the Dark Knight trilogy, I don't want to see another CBM with a criminal organization as the villains.
How they could work: I would have no problem with Intergang having a small role in the background. Bruno Mannheim and Morgan Edge have connections to Darkseid so it makes sense that they would appear in supporting villain roles but Intergang as a whole should not appear to the extent that the Mob did in the Dark Knight. Mention Intergang a few times and explain what it is. Anything more would be a waste of time.
Granny Goodness
Love him. Serve great Darkseid. Wear your pointed helmets proudly where he leads. Die for him -- and reward Granny.
Real Name: Granny Goodness
Why they should avoid her: Granny runs the training facility for Elite Soldiers on Apokolips. I'll admit that her back story is pretty cool but do we really need to waste time telling that story? The answer is no. The idea of a character named Granny Goodness is,in itself, very silly.
How could she work: I love Easter eggs. Have one of Granny Goodness.
Without life there will be no fear or avarice or hate.
Real name: Henry "Hank" Henshaw
Why they should avoid him: I absolutely love this character but damn is his origin complicated. That's why I'm not going to type it here. If you don't know it already click
here.
How he could work: Cameo appearance. A Lexcorp employee named Hank Henshaw.
I love these characters and I wouldn't mind if they appeared in he DC cinematic universe but I don't think they are the best options. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think.
