Thoughts on Man of Steel, the sequel and Justice League

Title says it all.

I couldn't get a way to the theater and I have money struggles so, I waited until I can watch it bootlegged. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was a good way to start a DC Cinematic Universe. Yes, you get to say "I told you so". Zack Snyder has grown as a filmmaker but Goyer hasn't and it shows in the film. While I did enjoy it, the more emotional scenes didn't hit me and I'm guessing part of that is I wasn't introduced to DC until my dad had me watch Batman and Batman Returns, then it went to Batman Begins. I never watched the Justice League cartoon cause it bored me when I was younger and my dad just never collected DC Comics. So, while I can see the emotional impact of the characters. The emotional scenes didn't strike me and it goes back to my biggest complaint with the movie which I knew from day one it was going to be, underdeveloped characters. We get to know Kal-El/Clark Kent and General Zod but, that's it. The action scenes were great and as far as devastation goes, this is completely new level of it for a comicbook movie. Unfortunately, I can only call them great cause there were times where the picture wasn't as fast as the sound (due to the loading and it being bootlegged), it was hard to tell what was happening at times. Henry Cavill and Michael Shannon are the highlights of the movie, and *****spoiler for those who haven't seen it******** I was hoping to see more Michael Shannon in the DC Universe cause he completely owns Zod, makes him interesting, sympathetic, brutal and just because he's an awesome actor. Everyone else was good of course. But, due to lack of character development really bringing the movie down. It's three out of five stars for me. Definitely Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2 all in one film. Definitely am looking forward to the DC Cinematic Universe.

Now, about the sequel. I got two things I want to get off my chest. 1) If they release it next year, it would be an insanely dumb move cause there is no way they'd be able to do it next year. I'm sure everybody from the movie has other projects they're committed to. So, 2014, very unlikely. 2) GET RID OF DAVID GOYER!!! Don't get me wrong, I really liked Man of Steel but David Goyer should not come back for the sequel and should not write Justice League. It's painfully obvious. Not to mention the fact he only deserves half credit for The Dark Knight trilogy and has everyone forgotten about Blade Trinity and The Unborn? Yeah, that's not a good sign at all. Get rid of his ass. For this cinematic universe, I'd hold off on Man of Steel 2 or my preferred title, Superman. Until Wonder Woman and The Flash get made. Those two should be next after Man of Steel. By then in the universe when Superman does come around, Lex Luthor would have rebuilt Metropolis and is campaigning for President and is looking for a reason to get rid of the Man of Steel whether it's by exile or killing him. We would learn about Kryptonite and while Lex Luthor is the brains behind the "master plan" the muscle would be Metallo. Very similar to a lot of people's ideas on this site, if not the exact ideas. I think it would be best to go that route as well as discovering the Clark Kent aspect of the character instead of Kal-El. Just my thoughts.

First thing is first, do NOT try to grab Zack Snyder for Justice League. He should stick with Superman and for Justice League, have someone who hasn't directed a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie or a DC Cinematic Universe movie to direct it. Build up to Justice League. Either accept Green Lantern in the DC Universe or reboot him, Wonder Woman and The Flash should be the next two after Man of Steel, Superman should come out after The Flash and Batman should either be the last film before Justice League or Justice League should happen after Superman. Either way, build up to it. Don't do world's finest until "Phase Two" as I'm calling it. Build audience anticipation. Also, do not have them already be an established team. X-Men and Fantastic Four is one thing but, for Justice League you need to go The Avengers route. I would also personally, have the White Martians be the villains because it's a great way to introduce Martian Manhunter. White Martians are on earth in search for him and that's why mysterious murders happen and it really uses the best of everybody to beat them.

Well, that's about it folks. Comment below with your thoughts.

Have you even seen the movie?

@Levi: As I stated in the editorial, yes I did. It wasn't in the theater, it was bootlegged but yes, I did see the movie this morning actually. The whole first part was a miniature review of the movie.

Ok you did. Some thoughts:

Keep Goyer but only have him do the story. He's not bad when it comes to story. He has great ideas but he shouldn't be the screenwriter or give him another screenwriter.

Next, reedit your article now and take out the word "retarded". That's a big N O. You don't write that in your articles. Shit I'm known for cursing in every comment but I never curse in my articles.

Third, as much as I'm fine with White Martians: NO. It's been done. We've had White Martians as an origin before, we've had Darkseid as an origin. Think outside the box like BRAINIAC!!!!!!

Fourth yea Snyder will direct JL. That's pretty much confirmed.

Fixed it. Goyer does have good ideas but he doesn't execute them well in his scripts and Snyder pretty much has stated he's open to it if they ask him. He never said he was directing it.

You know what, I actually felt glad that you liked the film haha.

I'm gonna have to agree with Levi though that they should keep Goyer but have someone help him like Jonathan Nolan. And if Snyder isn't going to direct JL I'd like to see Brad Bird's take on it.

Good article and a great read btw! :)

I'm hoping the DC Cinematic Universe gets up to the Marvel Cinematic's level and release 1 or 2 movies a year.

I felt similarly with Man of Steel. I understood the characters, but I never felt anything for them. If they had replaced a good amount of the action with more character development the film would have been stronger. I know there were several beautiful, emotional moments that I wanted to linger on so they could sink in, but it would always cut too short to another action sequence.

Good movie overall, but the screenplay and editing were very sub-par.

its a great time for comic book fans. I think they should keep goyer but get jonathan and chris Nolan to chip in more. Zack snyder has upped the ante for all superhero movies, anything coming after this risks being underwhelming if they dont match up.

I think they should keep Goyer on as a producer or something, because he did have good ideas but they were executed poorly. Get an experienced writer for the sequel, and maybe even a new director with a better track record than Snyder

White Martians are kind of like Skrulls, definitely NOT to be confused with the Chitauri of the movies. Shapeshifting is a big deal with them, and that means focusing on mystery, not action. Can we do that with a first Justice League movie? To me, it would seem like a waste. Kind of underwhelming.

i seen that you said you found the justice league animated series "borring" so i lost all respect and stopped reading can't take you seriously if you cant even follow those story lines

by god how are people so stupid now?

@HouseSnow: Never claimed to be a smart person but, that's still a messed up thing to say over something like this.

@KalKent: No need for name calling. People watch bootlegged copies all the time. It's not stealing if you didn't record it and upload it yourself.

@indigobolt956: The last thing you said was ignorant and wrong, especially when it comes to something that deals with opinion. Growing up, especially when I was little, I never got into Justice League or really any of the DC shows. I liked what I had seen of Batman: The Animated Series but never really got into it. But, that's when I watched tv. I was usually outside playing and as I stated in the article, it probably doesn't help anything since I never grew up around anything DC related.

First of all, glad you liked the movie Crossbones :)

Second of all, I disagree with you about the emotional scenes. I choked up a few times watching, especially when Pa Kent died in the tornado telling Clark not to save him and he yells "DAD!". I almost burst out crying no joke.

Third, I agree with your ideas (like having Goyer only write the story) except for the White Martians in the Justice League movie. It would be too much like The Avengers and I think Levi has the best villain idea in Braniac.

Good stuff man. Glad to see you've opened up a bit more towards DC.

I was disappointed that they didn't focus a bit more on the Relationship between clark kent and the Kent's. in fact the lack of it made me not even care about Jonathan Kent dying. I was more affected with John Schneider died on Smallville. Nothing beats that show!! Period. Say what u will. I'm very much looking forward to the man of steel sequel and badly want metallo and lex Luthor in the next movie. Since kryptonite wasn't introduced in man of steel bringing in metallo would be a great way for it to be discovered in the new superman universe. As far as Wonder Woman getting her own movie...nah. I don't think she can hold her own movie. Just introduce her in justice league. But bring on the flash.
