Ninja Turtles Trailer Response

Ninja Turtles Trailer Response

My thoughts on the first trailer for Ninja Turtles.

Editorial Opinion

Since the beginning, I haven't had much confidence that this movie will turn out to be good. This trailer seems to confirm a lot of what I've feared. Here are some of my main issues/concerns.

The Focus:

When I heard that Michael Bay was producing this movie, one of my biggest worries was that the movie would be Transformer-ized in the sense that the human characters like April would be the focus and the turtles would be subjugated into a smaller role where they're basically just there to look cool. I don't think they'd do it to the degree that they did with Transformers, but this trailer hasn't really alleviated the fear that the turtles themselves won't be written very well.

So far it seems like April is the one we're supposed to be identifying with, which makes me wonder if the turtles themselves will be explored in any sort of interesting way. The trailer presents this story from the angle of April encountering the turtles. Of course, it is just a teaser so it could just be a creative choice for this debut presentation. However, if it reflects the angle of that they're going at for the story as a whole, it's going to be a big letdown.

I feel like the people in charge are often skeptical about the audience being able to connect to non-human characters like robots, aliens, and mutants. The way I see it, if you write characters like the Autobots or the TMNT to feel like humans through their struggles and emotions, audiences will relate to them. To me, the turtles have never been difficult characters to connect with because they feel about as human as most fictional characters in action and adventure stories. My hope is that this movie will explore what is human and relatable about these characters.

The Look:

I don't like the design of the turtles. I'm not an artist so I can't really go that in depth about character design, but I've got three main issues.

First, the lips look weird. I don't believe they've ever had human-like lips until now, and it seems like it was for a good reason.

Second, I think they've done a bit too much with the outfits. It seems like they're going for this idea that the turtles have each cobbled together outfits that reflect their personalities and identities. It's not a bad idea, but I think it's a bit overdone here. Something more subtle might have worked better. Since they're essentially humanoid animals, they don't really need to be wearing much to look complete. Their shells kind of act like clothes and with minimal ninja gear, they have a very complete look.

Finally, in my opinion the turtles are too physically imposing. From what we can see here, they look rather large. They're traditionally shorter than April and that stature kind of suits the youthful nature of the characters and the agile nature of their fighting.

The Scope/Atmosphere:

From the beginning of this trailer, we're told that the city is being destroyed and we see the top of a skyscraper falling off. To me, it seems like the scale and the tone of the conflict in this thing are way off. The turtles fight the foot clan and street gangs like the purple dragons. The majority of the time, it's not really the kind of loud, destruction filled conflict that you get when someone like Spider-man is fighting a super villain. These are mostly hand to hand fights with simple, old fashioned weapons. It's the kind of scrappy fight that a guy like Casey Jones who just has some hockey sticks and baseball bats can jump into and hold his own.

When I saw the scene with the turtles sliding down a snowy mountainside and catapulting into what appeared to be a military vehicle, I was reminded of the G.I. Joe movies which are supposed to be those kind of high level crazy missions. That's not what the turtles are. The climax of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was them facing off against Shredder on a rooftop. And that was perfect! It was simple, it was personal, and it was grounded in the city setting where they most belong.

Bottom line, I realize this is only one trailer and I'm not saying it'll definitely be awful, but right now I'm not very optimistic about this movie. Hopefully the next trailer will address some of my concern and the movie will prove me wrong.

Totally agree. I have been a TMNT fan since i was a kid, and this trailer just does not do it for me. I watched it a couple other times and the feeling is still the same - MEH! I'll still probably watch it on dvd or download it or something.
I don't mind some of the changes done to make it fresh, new & updated (April, Shredder & their ties)... But the design of the turtles does not impress... Their costumes are too busy, they are freakin' huge & i don't get that "teenager" vibe about them. The 2012 nickelodeon series has captured that best IMO... & the lips - don't get me started.
Best of luck to it though

I'm willing to bet April's father is Splinter.

Shredder was talking about him in the trailer and how they were working on the Ooze, yet he's nowhere to be found in the trailer. You know he isn't just dead. He turned himself into a giant rat on accident, then trained the turtles.

They're screwing so much other crap up in this movie that this actually seems like a tame idea.

Take it to the bank.

^^^ There's nothing to prove what your saying about Splinter is true - That is simply your theory.
However I do wonder what they're doing with Splinter. Seeing that they're drawing some influence from the 80's cartoon... Will Splinter be a man that was mutated into a rat (cartoons), or a rat that was mutated (comics)?
Another problem I'm having is that the CGI does not look good. Smeagol looked real, Caesar from Planet of the Apes looked real, the transformers looked real... These turtles look very CGI-ed, and that takes me out of it.

@ MegaBatfan

Yeah, it is my theory, which is why I started my comment with, "I'm willing to bet...."

Sorry if you took that to mean I'm stating this is an absolute fact.

@ Corndog...
My bad... I was probly rushin through reading the comments & didn't read yours properly. But all in all, it still doesn't look to promising to me either. I'm hoping i'm wrong. Because this was a childhood favourite of mine... Even more than Tranformers...

@ MegaBatFan

you're preaching to the choir man! The turtles were my childhood. Them, Transformers, and comics.

I always check out every new take on the turtles, every time a new cartoon comes out. I wasn't too fond of the 2003 series, but it wasn't horrible either. I think the original comics, and the newest show on Nickelodeon are easily the best two. (Also, The original live action movie is still a favorite of mine. So much nostalgia!)

But yeah, I just can't get into to so far. Maybe if I see more, but I don't like what I'm seeing.

@DorkKnight, I'll be sure to check it out.

@Soto, I hope you're right and it's just a bad trailer.

@MegaBatfan, I agree that the 2012 animated series has probably done the best job of making them feel young. Haven't seen much of it, but what I have seen is pretty decent.

@Corndog, Idk. I think most people are used to Splinter being a mutated rat rather than a human turned into a mutant rat, so I think that's the way they'd go. It's possible though. That would make April like the turtle's sister in a way.

Splinter always has been a human that got turned into a mutant rat. He was Hamato Yoshi. He was Japanese. Thats where all the hate between him and Shredder came from. They were rivals of each other when they were both humans. Its been like that in every interpretation of the turtles that I can think of.

@ CorndogBurglar,

In both the original comics and the live-action movies, Splinter was the pet rat of a ninja named Hamato Yoshi in Japan. Intelligent for his species, Splinter was able to learn his master's art by mimicking his movements while he practiced.

Splinter was forced to run away, after his owner was killed by Shredder, and live in New York City's sewers. Due to a traffic accident, four baby turtles and a canister of radioactive ooze were sent down into the sewer, where they mutated both Splinter and the turtles.

In the original comics he was a mutated rat I believe. In the original cartoons, he was human turned rat. The live action was mutated rat. The latest cartoon he was human.

You know what, you guys are totally right. I forgot all about the live action movie and how Shredder cut his ear with his sword. I can't believe that slipped my mind.

And for the comics, I just didn't remember that. I have a lot of the original comics, but only read them once. They are pretty hard to find, the originals anyway. I have issues 1-8.

To my knowledge the 1989 and 2012 cartoons take the human turned rat approach while the original comic, first movie franchise, 2003 cartoon, and IDW comic take the mutated rat approach. The IDW comic (which I'm working my way through now) has kind of an interesting compromise between the two ideas. I won't spoil it though.

Yeah, no man you're right. I haven't read the latest comics by IDW either. I know the original comics from Mirage went up to something like issue 62 or 63. Then they started another volume years later that continued that continuity.

But I believe IDW rebooted it all in the early 2000's. Those are the ones I haven't read any of. Are they good? I might try to track them down if so. Hopefully they wont be as hard to find trade paperbacks for as the originals. I've looked everywhere for trades if the originals but aside from ultimate hardback editions (which don't actually collect every issue) and colored collections (again, that dont collect every issue) i cant find ANY trades. They just dont make them from what i've been able to gather. Its a real shame.

@Corndog, The new IDW series has been going on since 2011. I've read the first 8 issues of it through comixology and I've enjoyed it. The tone feels about right for older fans of the franchise. It's fun without being too kiddy. It's got some grit without making the turtles into cold-blooded killers (which is how they were in the original series to my knowledge).
