TV Line reveals that another member of The Flash's rogues gallery will be seen in season one of The CW series. There's no word on which episode he'll appear in or who will play him, but it sounds like the character will have an entire instalment of the Arrow spin-off devoted to his introduction. "In addition to the likes of Captains Cold and Boomerang, at midseason we will also meet Hartley, a onetime mentee of Dr. Wells’ who lost his hearing in an accident and now is out to wreak havoc with an invention of his own. (Of course, you may know Hartley — who happens to be gay — as the Pied Piper.)" The Pied Piper stands out as being one of DC Comics' first openly gay characters - as you can see from the panel below - and his powers allow him to cause vibrational damage and hypnotize people. Originally he was a super-criminal who fought the Scarlet Speedster, becoming a member of the Rogues but he would later reform and assisted The Flash as a vigilante.

They really had to give him that name? Major side eye to the creators.

DC is killing it in the LGBT representation department. So far they have Sarah, Nyssa, Sin and now this guy on the Flash along with another gay character if I recall correctly.

Marvel so far has had: Victoria Hand (dead and never mentioned as gay), Izzy Hartley (likely Hand's former gf and never outed before dying) and Justin Hammer is gay while in prison.

Seriously? Why mention it in the release. Obviously looking for a ratings boost. They wouldn't do that for a straight character.

Evil is evil. Gay or straight!

You're not helping with equality by specifically singling out the fact that he's gay.

With that said, I really hope they don't put all of the major villains in the first season.

Question, so if Flash beats him is it considered gay bashing, and would Flash be wanted for a hate crime? I seriously doubt they have the guts to make him be gay on the show, a gay hero yes but not a gay villain.

"Seriously? Why mention it in the release. Obviously looking for a ratings boost. They wouldn't do that for a straight character."

And here we have a textbook example of false equivalency. People like to trot out this argument of "Oh people wouldn't care if this character were white/straight/a man!" whenever the subject of a high profile comic character happens to be a woman or a minority or gay, and the answer is well "NO SH*T SHERLOCK." It's not a big deal because 99 percent of all characters in comics tend to be straight white guys, thus making it notable when one of them isn't.

@Dmon

I consider that kind of thinking segregation as well... you could use that same argument for female villains, and black vilains, etc.

Can't we just consider everyone equal?

What does being gay have to do with anything?

@PsyGuy That is the point I was making.

i like gay people because they don't seem to feel the need to insult straight people all the time.

and gay bars are awesome too. pet shop boys ftw.

I agree, my point was that it shouldnt take "guts" to make a gay villain. If a hero beats up a gay villain, their sexual preference shouldnt even be considered. What does that have to do with anything?

They won't depict him as homosexual in the show kind of like how they refused to make Constantine bisexual.
