When relative unknown Sasha Calle was cast as Supergirl in The Flash, it was a big step forward for representation in superhero movies. Director Andy Muschietti shared a video with her emotional reaction to the news she'd been cast, but the role may be a one-and-done for the actress.
DC Studios revealed its "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters" slate earlier this year, including a Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie.
It was clear at the time Calle hadn't been brought on board for the movie, leaving us to assume James Gunn and Peter Safran might be waiting to see how fans respond to her in The Flash before making any decisions. However, given her ties to the old DCEU, a new Kara Zor-El seems the most likely outcome.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Calle very much dodged the question of whether she's in talks to star in the movie which shares a name with Tom King's critically acclaimed comic book series.
"I hope to continue playing Supergirl," she responded. "I love her deeply! And I think that [The Flash] is really a runway to a bigger story for her."
"We don't really get to experience a lot. I feel like this is a runway to a bigger story. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, by Tom King, is an incredible comic. I love it. I think it's so cool. So yeah, I would hope to continue. I hope to continue playing Supergirl for sure."
If nothing else, The Flash should serve as a launching platform for Calle's Hollywood career. After Batgirl (starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon) was scrapped, it wouldn't be a great look for another Latina to be ousted from their DC role, though the movie is likely far enough away that a recasting would avoid too much backlash.
The Flash arrives in theaters on June 16.
