Jerry Bruckheimer Unsure About The Franchise Potential Of THE LONE RANGER

That shouldn't come as too much as a surprise, especially as the budget for The Lone Ranger is thought to be upwards of $200 million! Read on to find out more.

The Lone Ranger had a troubled production early on due to a budget which was considerably higher than Disney were happy with - especially after the their $250 million John Carter movie flopped - and so it's hardly surprising that the fate of this potential new franchise now rests on how well it does at the box office. "It’s always up to the audience. If the audience likes the movie then Disney will come to me and we’ll make another or it will be a one-off," producer Jerry Bruckheimer said about the chances of a follow-up to the movie which stars Armie Hammer as the titular character and Johnny Depp as Tonto. He actually went on to confess that he is worried about the remake opening between Man of Steel and Pacific Rim, and that those two releases could ultimately harm the performance of The Lone Ranger. "It’s very hard this summer. You have to hold your seats, it’s not the number of theaters but the number of seats. [Man Of Steel] is coming out this week and then next week another blockbuster will come out, if there is another blockbuster, and Superman will move to small theaters and someone else will get their seats." Do you guys think that The Lone Ranger will find box office success?

"The Lone Ranger" is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

STARRING:

Johnny Depp as Tonto
William Fichtner as Butch Cavendish
Ruth Wilson as Rebecca Reid
James Badge Dale as Dan Reid

Ummmm there will be no franchise opportunities, this movie is going to flop big time.

If i had to choose of which franchise i'd really want to see between 'Lone Ranger' and 'Man of Steel'. I'd go with 'Man of Steel'.

I think this movie will make at least enough money for a sequel. If you think about it this movie has been advertised a lot more than some of the other movies Disney has tried to make new franchises like John Carter and others don't care to remember. I'm not saying it will be good but it will definitely attract families so it will at least make enough money for Disney to consider making it a franchise. But I'm not always right so let's just wait and see.

They have no confidence in their own movie.....that is troubling.....same thing happened to After Earth.

Its a shame as some of comics were good.

It will probs get something in the box office as it is Johnny Depp, and they are doing everything they can to tell people it's been made by the Pirates people.

Still see it being demolished by Man of Steel and Pacific Rim though.

Just because you're not the alleged target audience, doesn't necessarily mean it will flop...people will go see it because of Depp...and it might be decent.. will MoS make more? yeah, likely... will it be better? maybe... doesn't mean it's going to bomb- only that most of you WANT/HOPE for it to... I think MoS had 'dud' written all over it.. nothing new/different about it compared to 'Returns'...i'll see it, but not expecting anything i haven't seen before

For me, there's just no appeal in the way they approached this film. More than anything, it's Depp playing a silly Tonto that turns me off. The rest of it looks like familiar territory covered in the late 90s early 2000s.

I'll rent it.

Just because its Johnny Depp doesn't really mean anything anymore. Dark Shadows didn't do that great in the theaters last year.

@ VaCubFan

After Earth had Will Smith and his son in it and it still flopped. The main problem with the Lone ranger is that they spent 250 million on a movie that most people out side of the Depp fans aren't interested in seeing. It's John Carter all over again. It's going to be a great movie that no one goes to see.

A movie based on a TV show (that was based on a radio show) in the 50s. One of ABC's highest rated shows with over 200 episodes in 5 year.

Then, screwed up by changing it to a movie mashup of "Pirates of the Wild Wild West"

Yep, no chance of a franchise.

Thanks Jerry!

@kneel... f*ck you. @bropous- i'm sorry, you lost me, tho i don't think it will completely flop, i just don't see anything "new" ...@Joe/Neo no bait laid, i'm very open to polite debate. sorry, not on crack. as for "looks like", i meant story-wise, not visually- maybe i should have been more specific- MoS looks TO ME like a rehash of S.R.- ie; more, albeit different and maybe more thorough "origin" story but same overall... sure, maybe better effects. And oh, wasn't this done in the "original" with Reeves? origin... Zod... etc? again, @Kneel- pretty sure i'm entitled to my opinion, you don't like it that's fine. and lastly- @Demon- i am by no means championing Lone Ranger. I'll see it because it looks ok, is an escape for 2hrs and might be fun..i'm in no way saying "OMG, Next mega-hit of the summer". $250M is a ton of money that i have to admit, beyond salaries, i'm kinda curious to see how it was spent

Presence1

I don't think it'll do as bad as John Carter, Depp's very prescene should prevent that, but I can't see this taking off into another franchise like Pirates.
VaCubFan
VaCubFan - 6/10/2013, 5:50 AM
and again @kneel- the f.u. was maybe harsh, but i still stand by it...i'm thinking you misinterpreted what i was saying, but still think you're an ass for the way you responded to MY OPINION. I'm not a Superman fan, i'll admit it, but i WILL go see it just to see it. Like a good many people leading up to this movie, one of the big complaints from people was "it's been done on the big screen already... twice". ie- origin story. we all know the story, why retell it...again! how about a NEW villain(s)? Superman has a wealth of cool, compelling and movie-worthy villains to deal with, why Zod again? and on top of origin...why not start the movie as a given that we all know where he came from and that he's already established in this universe and move from there. THAT'S what i meant, and i'm sorry if your small brain could not grasp that (hey, you want to throw barbs around, i can play that game too)

I think it will do BIG Business!!!! (of course, I thought Dark Shadows, and John Carter would too. also, Star Trek 5, Howard the Duck, any of the Punisher movies... okay.. okay.. I give up. I suck at predicting. I give up.)

I'm not normally one who raises concern over every race issue I see, but I do believe it to be ridiculous that Johnny Depp is playing a role that should have been filled by a minority. I have no doubt that his excellent acting will be a great Tonto, but I hear Disney saying in this casting that they do not feel there are any minority actors good enough to costar a summer blockbuster. For this reason, I plan on redboxing this movie and possibly going to MoS a second time.

It looks like it will be an enjoyable movie, but yeah it will totally flop big time. It's in between Man of Steel and Pacific Rim! LOL no way this ever becomes a franchise.

wompa1 - 6/10/2013, 7:04 AM
It looks decent but they invested way too much money for a franchise that hasn't really been around since the 50's and 60's. I'd hate to see it fail but it almost set itself up to.
NeoBaggins
NeoBaggins - 6/10/2013, 7:10 AM
@VaCubFan

You point out Man of Steel's usage of Zod as if the villain has had an exhausting run. Zod was the villain once in a 32 year old Superman film. And far as the retelling of Superman's origins on the big screen, that too is over 30 years old. The complaint would make a little more sense to me if it were a situation like The Amazing Spider-man, where the film makes some retreads on the heals of the previous series.

I'll just disagree on the perspective that it looks like Superman Returns. I'm sure the outlook has something to do with not being Superman fan. I really don't pay attention to details of things I don't like either.

I am excited about this film. I have aways been partial to westerns. Why are people comparing this to a steampunk film that flopped? Are you all that desperate to see the film fail? If anything this film tone wise looks closer to Zorro.

Nixx68 - 6/10/2013, 7:22 AM
It's a western. how do you justify a $200+ million budget on a western. It's not like you need that many special effects.

I am seeing Man of Steel this Friday. I enjoyed the Lone Ranger tv show but I rather go see MoS in theatre. I'll most likely watch Lone Ranger after it comes out on as a $1 box rental. Though John Carter did not make as much $ as they hoped I actually enjoyed it. Perhaps they can make a second one without it costing so much. The studios should be less concerned about the $ & more concerned about the quality of the movie. If the quality is there & it's a good movie the audience & the fans will ask for more & the money will come, allowing them to make another. Unfortunately some movies make a ton of money that don't deserve it or a sequel.
Nixx68
Nixx68 - 6/10/2013, 7:29 AM
The Lone Ranger was a radio program in the 30's and 40's and a tv series in the 50's. There is a bigger potential fan base for The Lone Ranger than Pacific Rim. Most people have never heard of Pacific Rim. I think both of those movies will flop though. Man of Steel will be a huge success.
Super12
Super12 - 6/10/2013, 7:48 AM
I think Lone Ranger looks good and I'll probably see it in theaters, but it ranks far below MOS in my opinion. I'll see it before Pacific Rim though cause I've actually heard of LR and PR looks cool but doesn't carry any weight for me. It's too bad it's opening in between these two monsters
fedup
fedup - 6/10/2013, 7:51 AM
The problem isn't so much that they have no confidence in their movie. The problem is that they spent a ridiculous amount of money on a director's whims. There was no reason, practical or artistic, for him to have spent what he did on the trains. The movie will ultimately be good, though there will be some who beat the "it flopped hard" drum if it doesn't make back every single penny of its budget. I would imagine it'll make back its budget but won't be a hit. Then it'll circulate around for a few years, people will rewatch it, especially people who were kids when they saw it, and it'll end up like The Rocketeer.

@Darkimage, but I believe Johnny Depp is part Native American. And he really pushed for the part. I rather a big name who is respectful of the culture as opposed to a no name the Studio/Director could push around and force to be stereotypical.
SnapperCarr
SnapperCarr - 6/10/2013, 9:02 AM
@Nixx68 I think Pacific Rim has a better chance than Lone Ranger. Westerns are no longer popular, while this generation loves seeing robots fighting amidst huge explosion (ex. Transformers, Real Steel).
