UPDATE: THE LONE RANGER To Undergo Reshoots; Will The Film Be A Flop?

Disney's The Lone Ranger will NOT be undergoing more shooting later this month, and another character is NOT being written in. Additionally, Wall Street analyst Richard Greenfield believes that the film will be anything but a hit at the box office.

UPDATE: Disney has reached out to comment on the report about The Lone Ranger undergoing reshoots, saying that it is "100% untrue" and that no reshoots are in the works.

Moviehole has learned that Disney's upcoming action Western The Lone Ranger, which stars Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp, will be undergoing more reshoots at the end of the month. The Gore Verbinski-directed film was in production for several months last year, but it appears that work on the movie isn't done yet. Apparently, they're even writing in another character, which is unusual at this late stage. Due to Disney's prior record with live action films (notably last year's John Carter) and multiple problems in its development since its greenlight, many have been expecting it to be a bomb at the box office. Now, Wall Street analyst Richard Greenfield has offered his predictions for some box office results for this year. While he believes that The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (out November 22nd) will be the biggest movie of 2013, he predicts that The Lone Ranger will be the year's biggest disappointment, and that people are unlikely going to get pumped for it. Additionally, Greenfield believes that Warner Bros.' Superman reboot, Man Of Steel (out June 14th), will be a big success at the box office, since online audiences are already very excited by it.

The Lone Ranger stars Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson, Helena Bonham Carter and Ruth Wilson. The film is set to hit theaters July 3rd, 2013.

of course depp will pack the seats, doesnt mean this will be a good film. depp seems to already be stealing all attention away from hammer and theres only been one trailer and a few posters. im not interested in this movie. imo, its going to flop

Not always. Depp starred in Dark Shadows, and that film didn't even make $240M worldwide. Lone Ranger needs to make much more than that to make back its budget and marketing.

@ wearethewalkingdead9

of course the movie could be shit just like the last two pirates movies but they still made a ton of money so this might as well.

@ niklander

its a bit of an insult that depp is playing a native american,i'm sure they could of found a native american actor.

but yeah i agree it does seem like depp playing jack sparrow.

Two ways Depp can put asses in seats: make sequels to his beloved classics.

Ummm what? What about Avengers?

Disney hasn't exactly been great with live action films. Prince Of Persia and John Carter didn't make back their money, while Tron Legacy didn't perform as well as expected. Pirates has been consistently big though. And like Levi says, Avengers doesn't count because it was in the works long before Disney got involved.

I really liked John Carter and think it didn't deserve all the negativity. Should've had someone else than Kitsch in the lead, but otherwise a fun movie.

This on the other hand looks really bad. A Lone Ranger movie that seems to have the damn Lone Ranger only as the second lead? Depp doing this usual thing? Not convinced.

I'm happy Depp is as successfull as he is at the moment, but I wish he'd make good movies that actually challenge him as an actor besides all the Jack Sparrow/Tim Burton stuff. Then again, if he enjoys himself doing this and the money it brings, who am I to judge? I just won't watch this movies.

Do movie audiences today really know who The Lone Ranger is? The fact that that character that really hasn't been heard from in a very long time may hurt it in the box office.

It's already been revealed that IM3 is not as dark as it looks.
Children will still be in the theaters for Man of Steel because its superman.

As for the kid-friendly films...
-The Croods
-Turbo
-Monsters University
-Despicable Me 2
-Escape From Planet Earth

Also, the children in my family love Thor even more than Iron Man or Cap. So based on this and it's November release, we should also expect a lot of kids seeing that one.

Once I saw the trailer prior to The Hobbit, I knew I wouldn't be seeing this film. I was concerned they were going to portray Tonto in an inaccurate manner and after seeing the full trailer, it was evident by the fact they have him wearing the face paint in every scene. For all the talk about being sensitive to the native american culture and wanting to depict them in a non-stereotypical way, they went completely against that by depicting a native american in a stereotypical way...wearing face paint throughout. Not accurate in the least bit and something that most native americans find very offensive as to how society associates them with that look.

My educated guess on how "The Lone Ranger" is going to play out:

50-50 chance the movie will not be pre-screened for critics and reviewers, always a bad sign.

Reviews are going to scorch the movie. I suspect almost every critic and reviewer is going to find Depp's "Tonto" incredibly racists and condescending. This is going to alienate much of the viewing public.

The reviews are going to call it formulaic and ill-composed as well.

Opening weekend BO will be around $56million with a major drop off within one week to around %19million. The movie won't have legs and it will be a partial failure.

The biggest thing that is going to kill this movie is the racism and portrayal of Native Americans through Depp's portrayal.

This analyst knows his stuff. The sequel to one of the highest grossing films of last year will also be a hit, and a movie with one of the worst trailers we've seen might be a flop. Genius!

Let's see on the plus side-
I like Depp.
I'd love to see a cool Lone Ranger movie.
And Hammer has been pretty good, or at least non-offensive, in what little I've seen him in.

On the minus side-
Depp CAN be [frick]ing annoying!
I HATE the Pirate movies and the Sparrow character so the Depp/Verbinski combo to me is meh.
The trailer was crap and did NOT pique my interest in the film...at all!

Verdict-
Most likely a shitty movie.
And probably a flop.

Too bad.

I can understand why they're worried. Gore Verbinski action films aren't exactly the deepest and most intense movies out there. But Johnny Depp will save this movie, believe me you.
Also, I think that most people are predicting problems with this movie that don't exactly exist. Racism? That prediction is way off-course and totally unreasonable. With Hip-Hop culture being the way it is these days, do you really expect everybody to be coy with a few Indian jokes?
FennecPilot

@INSTANT JUSTICE

I agree that the history of the treatment of Native Americans in the USA (and the First Nations folks up in Canada) has been horrid, but things are changing and the latest generation is MUCH MUCH less likely to put up with overt racism, especially in movies (unless of course, they are from Texas or the Southern States.....but I digress..... :) )

I do think the critics are going to eviscerate the film for the racism and Native protrayal via Tonto/Depp.
