Disney Planning A ROCKETEER Reboot

Disney Planning A ROCKETEER Reboot

This is bound to piss off quite a few CBMers! The somewhat obscure, but very popular 1991 Joe Johnston adventure flick looks set to get the reboot/remake treatment at Disney. Read on for details..

Vulture's "spies" have informed them that Disney's first project under new studio chief Alan Horn will be a new version of The Rocketeer. The original 1991 movie was directed by Captain America: The First Avenger helmer Joe Johnston, and - in a plot slightly similar to Disney/Marvel's Iron Man franchise - dealt with a racing pilot named Cliff Secord (Billy Campbell) who discovers a rocket-pack prototype in his stunt plane, and becomes a metal-mask wearing hero. Now the actual characters of Tony Stark and Secord are very different, and the period setting will also serve to distance both properties from each other, but it IS still curious that Disney would want to focus on this reboot given the face-value similarities sure to be perceived by the public. The Rocketeer was also something of a Box Office failure, despite being loved by many CBM fans. The movie was based on a comic written by Dave Stevens, and published by the now defunct Pacific Comics in 1982.

What do you guys think of this decision?

Release 3 Marvel films per year instead of rebooting old films.

Leaving the rebooting schemes to Sony Pictures, as they are in their last breaths.

was the original so successful or the character is so well known, to be worth a remake? is true, the only thing in that movie that aged well was jennifer connelly, but leave it like that. it doesnt need to be retold or updated.

"I do my own stunts!" Of course I will see it but I'm worried it will trample all over the pulpy goodness of the original. It better still take place in the 1930's/40's.

A reboot of this = a chronic lack of fresh ideas at Disney then.

I'm really okay with this. Reboots don't destroy the original, and may actually turn out to be pretty good!

I love the original but I'm open to this, as long as they remain faithful to the source material and doesn't try to be too much like the first one then it could be good.

FINALLY!!! I was saying recently how I would love to see a new Rocketeer movie!

I really enjoyed the original, but the only way a sequel could work is if they recast. Which would make it worse than a reboot IMO.

I don't want to see a remake. The first film was great, leave it be. Going strictly with the reboot approach though, they could do a whole new story, suit, villains, visual style, all that. You know, instead of trying to completely remake a movie that doesn't need to be remade.

My dad and I saw this when I was 5 years old, it's actually quite exhilirating that someone at Disney will be involved with this franchise again. If you read any of the magazines pre-release, the studio thought this would be one of the highest grossing films of all time and there were at least 2 sequels planned. I felt terrible I was unable to make it to the 20th Anniversary screening and was even more infuriated that it was just a bare bones release on Blu-Ray. As long as the new film isn't too CGI heavy like Captain America, I think the reboot will be a great success. I'd like to see Duncan Jones helm this.
