Alan Taylor Talks Following Kenneth Branagh On THOR: TDW; Teases DR. STRANGE For Phase 3

While stating he picked up the baton from Branagh “with fear and self-loathing”, Taylor also speaks on the difficulties of filming on location and seems confident Doctor Strange is up after Ant-Man.

When talking to Telegraph UK, Taylor spoke about his approach to following up Kenneth Branagh. He states with a laugh that when conceiving the project he initially felt "fear and self-loathing,” but added that “The scariest part was talking to these actors who are so good at what they do, knowing they’d done these characters with, you know, him(Branagh). Ever since Henry V he’s been a hero and he’s an actor so he speaks their language more than I ever will.”

When the topic turned on location shooting, Taylor brought up the difficulty of shooting in London, namely St Paul’s Cathedral and Greenwich’s Royal Naval College. “They’re very sensitive about St Paul’s. You can’t destroy it because it survived the Blitz so they really don’t want superheroes to smash it. So we had to negotiate how many roof tiles we could take off when something hits it.” In Greenich“I like the formality of the environment, it’s a brilliant place to shoot chaos,” he muses. “We got to blow up the Painted Hall, one of the most beautiful places in London.”

Lastly, Taylor was asked about what upcoming Marvel projects interest him. “I do like the weirder ones....What’s cool about them is they can now start exploring the weirder ones because they had so much success with the mainstream ones. So Ant Man is coming along, Guardians of the Galaxy, you know a raccoon is one of the main characters and that’s nuts. And then Doctor Strange. They’ve got lots of places to go.” What's interesting about the last sentence is that Taylor name drops Dr. Strange amongst Ant Man, a known phase 3 property. This only furthers what Feige has alluded to, that Dr. Strange is pretty much a lock to come our way in Phase 3!

Soooooooooo....the main four (Thor, Iron Man, Cap, and Hulk) may not actually appear in Phase 3 at all until Avengers 3...

Though I imagine the tags in the credits MIGHT give a clue to what they're up to leading into the team film.

Or we don't get Cap 3, since that's not in any way definite, and we get Black Panther instead.

The animated movie of Dr Strange was great. Hope they go that route of dark and gritty with him.

Taylor did a great job, but it was obvious which parts he was overruled on by Marvel brass.

No damn Dr Strange. He sucks. Give me some Black Panther and Ms Marvel.

Show up WB/DC and get superhero movies with a black lead and a female lead before they get WW and John Stewart or Martian Manhunter made.

@SlaveMasterFlexXx

You might be right there. I would say Hulk first in 2016, since Feige seemed to like having the established character be the first release, and then the new one come after (like Cap 2/GOTG).

And having Guardians 2 be about the Inhumans would be extremely interesting, especially if it leads directly into Avengers 3.

I doubt Thor 3 or Cap 3 will not be part of Phase 3. No way do you let a sequel not happen for 4 years. I do believe Thor 3 will occur in May 2016, with Cap 3 in 2017.

@Charlie2094

Yeah, I know, but these predictions are simply wishlists.

I've read that Thor needs a third film, so maybe that can be the first movie in 2016. I don't know how Cap 2 ends though, so it may not need a third one until after Avengers 3.

I don't see the 4-year thing being universally true for sequels though. How long was it between Die Hard 3 and 4? Aliens was 7 years or so after the original. Episode 1 did pretty well despite being made more than 4 years after Return of the Jedi.

That's fine, but I was talking Cap 3 more than Thor 3. I get that Thor 3 needs a sequel not long after, but Cap 2 may well have a solid ending, and not need a third one right away.

I'm VERY pleased to see Dr. Strange on the slate. Gives me an excuse to get a good costume for Halloween and actually have the character recognized.

I am curious though... if they do 4 movies between each Avengers, what would be #3 & #4 for an Avengers 3 lead-in? And, what form would the the Avengers take at that point? Who might be missing... ? Who might be added... ?

Really hope Alan Taylor comes back for the Thor 3 sequel, but I really doubt it. Alan Taylor needs to understand that the MCU is a structured universe, any one movie that deviates from the vision that Kevin Feige has will put the continuity at risk.

Yessir, I think Feige said that starting next year their plan is to
Have 2 slots a year
One slot being a continuing (ex Thor cap hulk)
And the other slot is a new franchise

@everyone
It'll make more sense to have Black Panther movie before Avengers 3 then to have him after Avengers 3

@billytwohats

Would you rather have a movie, or a few television series on a network like FX or something?

When Marvel was talking about doing 4 new series, that's what I was hoping for. All the street level guys, like Daredevil, Punisher, and Heroes For Hire, would work REALLY well for a series. Minimal effects, solid drama/crime stuff, and actual heroes. Also, to do a big team up sorta like how their first five movies led to Avengers, the season finales of all these shows should be a crossover event.

Dr.Strange is a giving for 2016 and I predict that GotG 2 for 2017 to go heat to head with DC/WB Justice League you can't have a Hulk/Black Panther type movie going up against Justice League you need a Juggernaut like a GotG sequel So that leaves 2 and I predict it will be Thor 3 and Black Panther

@omarvl
I disagree, Marvel does have to go head to head with a Justice League(especially when the movie doesn't have a for sure date). I honestly don't see Marvel and WB competiting against each other and think its only fans speculating that they are(DKR and Avengers both made more than a billion dollars so there is plenty to share).

Dr strange and Black panther will do well on their own even being such unique characters in the marvel franchise but they will still do very even if Justice League comes out the same yr

I agree. If Marvel and WB released movies the same WEEKEND, then yeah that's competition. They seem to be giving each other room to breathe.

@ruadh after enduring agents of shield no I would rather have a movie with an experienced creative director and a solid script than a tv series.
